In the second installment of our “Built to Win” docuseries with Oracle Red Bull Racing, we’re diving into powertrains. We’ll start with Oracle Red Bull Racing’s Head of Partnerships, Zoe Chilton, who explains the difference between an engine and the power unit, before diving into the evolution of the Formula 1 engine overtime. She then explains the challenge of building the next generation of engine for the 2026 season, which is just as powerful as today’s engine but about 50% more hybridized. Oracle Red Bull Racing’s Head of Thermodynamics, James Taylor, covers what that entails for the structure of the engine and the biggest changes teams will have to take on to reach these new regulations. Next, Oracle Red Bull Racing Team Principal and CEO, Christian Horner, explains the monumental task of building an engine from scratch in just a few years, comparing it to that of a startup business. Taylor says the team is relying on the class-leading, high-performance computing of Oracle technology to do high-quality simulation and using it to optimize things early in the design process, which gives the team a “big step forward.” Meanwhile, Oracle Red Bull Racing CIO, Matt Cadieux, explains how Oracle Cloud Infrastructure allowed Red Bull Powertrains to scale easily and work more closely with the team designing the chassis-all of which creates a much more seamless process and synergy for a more powerful car.
