Defense, just like bidding, is all about partner communication and we need to figure out the most important message to say.

Using a discard, should we encourage partner to play towards our better suit or discourage partner from playing a different suit?
Sometimes there isn't an obvious choice, but with this hand we do have a chance to bring down a tricky 1NT.

What would you open with a hand like this showing 16 points? I have read Points Schmoints!: Bergen's Winning Bridge Secrets By Marty A. B I bid one club because I thought that the hands wasn't good enough for NTs, but my partner didn't like it.

The problem was that opposition bid 1S and then my partner bid 1NT without hqaving any stoppers in spades. But she thinks thinsk that she didn't do anything wrong. The game didn't make 1NT
