      You should play another round with 2 balls, one normal and one rolled back hitting the same club for each shot like a one man scramble. That would show the difference between the 2 different balls performance!

      It’s the dumbest thing I’ve heard them do. And to blame it on a soft excuse like golf courses are running out of room. Maybe golf course architecture needs to change. Some of the best golf holes are short par 4’s and short par 3’s

      @brysondechambeau ok if the PGA, R&A and whomever else want to grow the game, this is definitely a step backwards. Im 42 & ironically have the same birthday as Tiger Woods. I grew up watching him turn golf from a boring old mans game to a SPORT and a huge part of that was how fit he was & how far he outdrove his competitors. Rolling back the golf ball is basically like taking homeruns out of professional baseball, its asinine.
      So hear me out, since you're obviously a top player in the world with various connections throughout the golf world...What if an event was created called the "Vintage Classic" or something more catchy, and for that 4 day tournament professional golfefs had to play with vintage equipment?? Each year it could rotate & use one of the "shorter" non-bomber courses & both the course & professional entity win!! I think it's way better than rolling back the ball which effectively still gives the longer hitters an advantage & the shorter hitters a bigger disadvantage now. Give a rolled back golf ball to Corey Pavin & he's never a tour player, or Kuchar or David Toms...etc. PGA got this wrong & I wont play golf any longer with rolled back balls.

    Bryson's quickly becoming (or already is) the best TH-cam golfer out here. Love his vids. Having said that, i think the pro golfers could do fine with the rollback. But just leave it at the pro level. Certainly from the late 90's to early 2000's they managed to adjust their game with the better stuff quickly enough (revolutionary golf balls and revolutionary driver faces). Seems like it took about one day for almost the entire tour to make a ball change after one big Tiger victory at the 2000 US Open with the new ball 😄

      Like every corporation companies will do what brings them profit. If they realize that amateur won’t buy the ball they won’t go through with it. even if they do, they likely still sell and not conforming model and I doubt most amateurs are going to switch to something designed to hold pros back when most amateurs have the opposite problem. It’s going to be like the version of a set of blades amateurs are going to use it.

      @MrPoepope 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@jordan3305 It's 100% not the ball when it's pushed straight right with a fairway wood from the rough. Any ball in the world is going exactly on that line. If you consider that the ball is flying 10% even 15% shorter, and reckon that curvature is usually a fraction of distance especially with a good player, there is no way the difference in curvature is the 25 yards between the middle of the right rough and the middle of the fairway. We're talking 5-10 yards max. If anything newer balls generally spin less than older ones off the driver fairway woods especially.

  • @pirtatejoe
    @pirtatejoe 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +38

    I wish that on the pro tours, you did use a different ball. At the level of skill people like Bryson have, using a golf ball that is more punishing and doesn't travel as far would be a great thing. Those "slight heel" hits that end up in the rough instead of in the fairway is exactly the point. Not being always able to carry that bunker that was strategically placed is a good thing. That's why the designer put it there. These are all things that amateurs deal with during a round of golf since just not as skilled as the pros are, so seeing them have to compete in the same way would be great.

    I've always hoped there would be a tournament where a select few of today's top players would play a tournament using equipment Arnie, Jack, Lee and Gary used in their hey day in the 60's. That was shot making at it's finest. Balata balls, persimmon woods, and old school forged irons. How would today's top players do? How many would be willing to accept the challenge? Thanks for doing this video, Bryson. It's probably as close as I'll get to seeing old school equipment compared to today's high tech stuff.

      It was more entertaining for sure watching those old tournaments. I don't think your average amateur golfer is beniffeting from the new balls as much as the pros though as they likely aren't buying the best of them. I've played with balata balls and cheaper soft modern balls and if anything the Balata was a bit better.

    • @keernhaslem1845
      @keernhaslem1845 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      The balata ball could go far. It was a matter of reducing spin. The longest players used a bit of a lift motion at impact. Trevino talked about this. And I saw it in action, in players who could hit three woods off the tee. With prodigious distance. Ala Freddie Couples. I watched amateurs successfully execute this motion too though

How will amateur golfers like myself with 15 hcp, with drives around 250-260 carry hurten my game? Im struggling as it is with high spin drives, and to reach par 5 on second shot. 10-15 yards less would demolish my chances to ever go for a eagle on a par 5.

Coincedentally a lot of those shotmakers are the shorter hitters that this ball will affect most. Otherwise every major winner moving forward is gonna look like Bryson just to compete.

    I’m a student of the history of the game and its equipment. Prior to it’s introduction in the US primarily by Harry Vardon in the early 1900s when the wound rubber liquid core ball had replaced gutta percha all courses in Europe were links style layouts on relatively flat terrain. The significant difference in early US courses was they had to be designed around a much greater variation in terrain where the art of shaping shots is what came to separate the pros from the recreational golfers.
    I learned the game in the early 1980s with Jack Nickluas’ 1970s ‘Golf My Way’ as my guide and what resonated the most was his statement that he never saw a shot as straight with a very simple explanation of what makes a ball curve in the air like the banked wing of an airplane-tilting the spin axis by swiping across the back of the ball from the outside (slice spin) or the inside (hook spin) and that the goal underlying doing that wasn’t just navigating doglegs off the tee with driver but to predictably control where the ball hops and rolled on the green with approach shots and being able to avoid hazards by starting the ball at them but steering it away back to the center of the fairway.
    That made a huge amount of sense to me so I practiced the techniques he suggested until I could shape shots both ways, not always with perfect success, but keeping the ball on the green much more often that I had been when I only saw every shot as dead straight and anything less as failure. The reason shaping shots was a rewarding strategy was because the course designers oriented greens to fairways and placed bunkers around the them in a way to reward golfers who had the skill to shape shots and penalize those who couldn’t.
    The strategy is simple and analogous to landing a plane on a runway. Regardless of the shape of the green you look at the pin placement and the greatest distance from edge of green to pin then try to bring the ball in on that line. So if a the longest dimension edge to pin from runs left to right relative to the fairway / the ideal approach shape is a fade and if the green runs the opposite direction \ a draw will be more likely to keep the ball on the green and guide it closer to the hole.
    Last week I got an eagle on a par 5 with a approach shot with about 20 yards of right to left draw. It was 125 front 135 pin to a back left pin on a green that was perpendicular to the fairway. I hit my second shot to left side of the fairway to set in up them aligned my stance like so far right of the green one of my playing partners commented ‘do you know you are aiming at that house over there?’ Had I been hitting the ball straight I would have used my 9i but the path I was planning for the ball was much longer and higher so I used my 5i, landed it exactly on the right edge of the green saw it kick left and roll towards the pin, hit it and drop in.
    In was the most rewarding shot I’ve hit in probably the last ten years. Why? I defeated the hole the way it was designed to be challenged, not by plopping a 60° wedge shot hit 135 yards dead straight. Yeah, that’s another way to play the game but for me it’s not nearly as much fun or as challenging and at age 72 just can’t hit a lob wedge that far 😂

You should still have mid-irons to wedges into most greens. The other guys (shorter hitters/slower swing speeds) will likely be hitting lumber and long irons/hybrids. I get a little emotional when I watch Bryson. Won't lie. A little long winded backstory. I'm 34 years old. I played golf first time when I was 14 years old after I got my first job it was something I wanted to get into with my father. My father a single father of 3 kids wasn't a lot of expendable money in the household to pay to play golf alot. We played about 10 times. My father always played slow pitch softball on his time off. His first time playing his first drive went over 300 and dead straight the excitement on his face was priceless. He shot an 82 first time playing, the man was an athlete at 5'7 he dunked in high school. He was 42 at the time. Well I didn't play again until about 2019. I got him back into it. Shortly after he had a massive heart attack, he's still alive but it started to get where his days were numbered playing. 2 years ago he had a rotator cuff surgery and tommy johns. Attempted to take him out last Father's day and it was his last time he said he's done can no longer play he can't lift his shoulder. Never saw the man shoot over 90 but that day. He shot a 98 and on 17 he drained a 40 footer. But last hole 405 par 4 hole number 1 because we had to start on hole 2. But I've hit every par 4 green but this one. Its 28 yards downhill so plays more like 370ish kept telling him in the cart I'm going to swing like Bryson and get this green had never pared a course needed an eagle to do so. Well wind was helping also it was 13 mph I swung out of my shoes I think we calculated the ball would been around 330 at the time I'd never hit a ball over 305. But the wind and downhill helped I drove the green. I was 8 feet out putted for eagle. First time I pared a course but I remember saying Bryson on my back swing. One of my fondest memories then seeing that this guy is genuinely a good guy. But that was the wildest time ever playing. The super saw me hit it and said he cant count on one hand the amount of times that green was drove. I had my father sign the ball. Only ball I ever kept. I lost my first hole in one ball first eagle but I just knew it's his last time and first time it was special

    I think a lot of us would be super intrigued to watch you do a head to head ball comparison round using the Quad for the numbers. That way you could ensure the same swing speed, & compare the difference in ball speed & distance when swinging the exact same speed using a currently confirming golf ball vs what a rollback ball is going to be. People may actually realize a lot of the pushback against rolling it back has quite a bit to do with course management, not just distance alone. A pro golfer needing to relearn what each individual club is capable of is a huge slap in the face to people like you that work your ass off your whole life to get as dialed in as you & other pro golfers are.
