If anyone is interested in the history of the song, I am the original composer. The line "Down in the pines I hear the cold wind blow." mentioned by chreesko was originally "Down by the tracks that hobo whistle blows", and was changed to fit the Bonanza theme. There are a few other changes, mainly the 4th line tune, but the song is close to the original. Hoyt recorded this song, and another I wrote, "Young Man". I miss him; he was a good friend.
+Ray Phoenix You write some great music friend. I been looking for this song all over. And by golly your name is on the Hoyt Axton Snowblind Friend/Free Sailin' Album:) Do you know by chance who wrote the "Dead And Gone" song or "ain't got time to hear a grown man cry" the ones he sings on this episode of Bonanza ? I just cant seem to find nothing on them.
+KayWal1981 Thanks. I don't have Hoyt's album, and I'm pleased to learn that my name is on it. I don't know the source of the other songs you mention. I've only heard the Endless Roads part of the episode in question, so I haven't heard "Dead and Gone" or "Ain't got time to hear a grown man cry". I look forward to that.
Pernell Roberts had one of the best singing voices and had such excellent talent and raw talent for it. He had a wonderful Baritone voice and I really wish he had sung more often in Bonanza! The shows were always a real treat when he sang. Of the 4 actors he was the only one that was an accomplished singer. The show was never the same after he left. I understand why he wanted to leave, but oh I really never watch the other seasons past season 6, because Adam is no longer on the show.
Pernell Roberts and Hoyt Axton - without a doubt, two of the FINEST voices that ever caressed a song. What harmony! The lyrics of 'Endless Road' are so bittersweet ... and heartbreakingly appropriate.
Ach ta elegancja i gracją poruszania się tego aktora na mustangu jest nie do porównania z nikim,no i ten wokal cudo po prostu, czuję się jak na prawdziwej prerii ŚWIETNE
PERNEL ROBERT UN GENIO IGUAL QUE TODOS ACTORES DE BONANZA YO LA VI CUANDO ERA CHICO Y LA SIGO VIENDO LA SERIE MAS ESPECTACULAR JAMAS VA HABER OTRA IGUAL BONANZA ES INIGUALABLE Y YO SE TODO DE BONANZA PARA MI ES UNA BENDICION SEGUIR VIENDOLA ES LA SERIE MEJOR LEJOS Y NO HABRA OTRA IGUAL BONANZA LA MEJOR LEJOS BENDICIONES PARA LOS FANATICOS COMO YO AMEN
i discovered this song through angel olsen, thought it was hers for a while and it became one of my favorites songs, now I'm here to learn the history behind it
I love listening to those two sing that song. I have this episode on an old tape and have absolutely worn out this section of the tape from listening to it so much.
thank you for posting this video! This bonanza clip is my favorite. Pernell sings and looks just like an angel. I love when he lifts up that chicken leg right before he sings his part. And I love the way Hoyt Axton keeps looking at him thru out the song. These two sung so great together! I love the harmonizing!
Lyric AXTON: Well, every road I see leads away from me There's not a single one that leads me home All the roads keep saying, "Friend, come see what's 'round the bend" So is it any wonder that I roam All the places I have been keep a-callin' me back again Down in the pines I hear the cold wind blow My heart keeps tellin' me, footloose and fancy free But the road goes by and calls me as it goes ROBERTS: Well, maybe somewhere there's a someone waitin' there with a smile And maybe there'll be someplace I can stop and rest a while 'Cause maybe you weren't meant to be just a rollin' stone And there's a road to travel on that leads you back to home BOTH: Oh, but I'll keep travelin' on, keep a-lookin' at the dawn Till I can lay this lonesome body down And when that day has come, I never more will roam And every road I see will lead me home And when that day has come, I never more will roam
OH MY GOD THIS SONG MAKES ME GET VERY EMOTIONAL NOT THAT IT MAKES ANY DIFFERENCE BUT IT'S FUNNY CAUSE I'M A 53 YEAR OLD MAN THAT IS 5 10 260lbs WITH WHAT USE TO BE A MUSCULAR BUILD BUT IT MAKES ME NO THERE'S A GOD AND HE CREATED THESE 2 GUYS THAT TOGETHER MAKE ME NO THAT ONE DAY I'LL BE JOINING JESUS CHRIST IN HEAVEN OUR HOME ALL OF US THAT HAVE FAITH THAT JESUS DIED FOR US AND THAT ONE DAY MY DAD AND ALL MY BROTHERS AND SISTER WILL BE TOGETHER JUST LIKE WE WERE IN BETTER TIMES BEFORE SICKNESS, DRUGS AND ALCOHOL DESTROYED A ONCE GREAT FAMILY. THIS IS WHY IT IS SO EMOTIONAL FOR ME, REMEMBERING BETTER DAYS WATCHING BONANZA TOGETHER. I HOPE I MADE SENSE I NEEDED TO SAY THIS AND COULDN'T VERBALLY EXPRESS MY FEELINGS IN FEAR OF BAWLING LIKE A BABY. THANK YOU GOD I LOVE YOU SO MUCH.
I think this song is a perfect encapsulation of Adam Cartwright and I think it was the reason Howard and him clicked so well. They both feel like they've got nowhere to go, no one understands them. Adam has spent his life being the "educated" Cartwright and at times I think he feels alone in that as he see the violence and brutality of the west. He's seen a better way but no one wants to change for that. Every road he goes down has no satisfaction for him and, after this song and this episode he finally realizes he's had enough and goes back to a place that can understand him.
@Yodasboy I love the lyrics of this song and so appropriate for PR, I can see why that for most people the popular demands for reruns are the first 6 seasons because Adam was in the show. I read over time that PR became more sentimental of Bonanza and wasn't upset that people associated him with it, the older he got in age.
@inkenyo He did not just decide mid Bonanza that he loved to sing. Singing was always one of his great loves. It was the producers and writers who did not accomodate it enough. He wanted it to be a part of the series from the very start.
I adore this song I would love to get some albums of pernell roberts could anyone out there help me please I just love his voice also would love to gets some pictures for my grandchildren love think Bonanza is a great show please if anyone could help I would be very greatful
There is a four CD collection. I'm not sure what the title is, but something with "Bonanza" I guess. I incluedes two Lorne Greene CDs, one Pernell Roberts CD and a fourth with several songs by the other two.
yt30417 Because, as each season was released on DVD, Andy Klyde (Bonanza lawyer) asked that it be removed from TH-cam. I think it was pretty nice that he left the ones that hadn't been released yet. :)
Great ep kinda sad though I just found out that this was the last ep that Pernell was in. I guess Hoyt and him became good friends after this ep though. Thanks for posting
Why has youtube removed all the original Bonanza-Videos? I am a real fan and very sad now that I can't watch one of my favourite series any longer on you tube.
Thank you for this video...and for the lyrics. I love Pernell Roberts. Do you have the lyrics of the song Broken Ballad? I don`t know if that´s the name of the song,...i can´t find them. Thank you
I believe they are using a capo on the first fret to raise it a half step. Once the capo is placed on the first fret, the song is played in the position of "C." There are only 3 chords in this song....C, G, and F. Good luck.
A friend gave me some chords but I want to have the notes and the chords... Do you have something like that or are you looking for ? A friend gives me guitar cours so I want to ask him...
Damn!!!!! Look at the muscles in his face. The man is just fine all over. And that voice, he could sing the phone book to me.
If anyone is interested in the history of the song, I am the original composer. Thank you for sharing the history of this song. From one composer to another you are a very talented writer.
Thanks for writing two of my favorite Hoyt Axton songs ;-) Young Man is absolutely awesome too.

I miss Pernell Roberts and Bonanza. He was my dark Angel cowboy with a Hart. Hope rest in peace ✝️📢📽️♥️

It's easy to tell where PR's heart is. He doesn't sing the song - the song sings him... so beautiful. Thank you...
