I use soda pop cans. A simple can opener will take the top off and a 2-inch net cup fits like a glove. I know you will not be able to see the water level without taking up the net cup, but this configuration keeps out the light much better than using a plastic water bottle, keeping algae at bay. Easier to construct too. I think it is an indoor solution only as outside use would be subject to the weather. I'd love to hear your comments, Khang, maybe even see an experiment. Have a happy!
Sir - I have been binge watching hydroponics for 72 hours. You have BY FAR the BEST, SIMPLEST, MOST AFFORDABLE and EFFECTIVE system out there! Thank you for explaining everything so simply. Thank you for using the K.I.S.S. method! Good luck growing!
Thank you for your videos. I have learned so much by listening to you. One thing that I do differently than you, is I use Aluminum foil to wrap around my bottles. That way I can peel back and see the water level.
Greetings from Germany. I subscribed to your channel because there is no real alternative to this topic in Germany. Thank you for this informative video. It actually helped me a lot. All the best Manuel
Truly best youtuber let alone genre creator out there. You explain every single thing I can think. Genuinely never thought I would be excited about gardening.
Hydroponic gardening seems so intimidating to me. I love that you make your own systems. Your videos help to lessen the intimidation factor. I want to try this.
What a gentle soul and your plants are so appreciating gentleness and kindness and so am I. I learned a lot, you are gifted my friend T.Y. for sharing you're knowledge.
Khang you are an amazing grower. I’ve been following you about six years or so. You have awesome ideas and you are so full of knowledge. I will be tuning in more often now that I’m getting back into the hydroponics since I’m a chump when it comes to outside creatures.
Children at home who are with less playing companions may be encouraged with these sort of videos and practice nice plants growing techniques. Thanks for this nice video.God bless you.
hi I’m new to hydroponics and your videos are amazing So easy to follow and very clear instructions. I can’t thank you enough you’re a true inspiration Thank you so very much
Hi, thank you for your videos they are very helpful and straightforward. I noticed that Kratky method is quite similar to wick system, I wonder if there are any differences other than the presence/absence of wick in the systems, and whether one system is better for certain plants?
i love it, i will try this method because my tomatoes and peppers are not doing well in soil. I used to live in New York and i never had a problem with these plants, but not here in Manila. Thank you so much for this video. Keep doing a great job, Khang. You do the most informative and concise videos here on youtube.
because of you im collecting all the plastic i was trashing before :) but thank you, i already put 7 lettuces into hydro containers. lets see how lettuce hydro project goes :)
I grew the chocolate cherry outdoors last year and had to support it with 3 cages and 5 stakes. The branches were at least 6 feet long! Delicious tomatoes!
I am starting hydroponics for the very first time. I followed your instructions. Does the plant stay in the same bottle for its entire lifetime; does the water and fertilizer have to be changed? does the stalk get bigger and do the clay balls have to be removed once the stalk gets bigger? won't the stalk get chocked? I am very excited to see how this cucumber plant does vs those in the soil. Anxious to hear your answers. Thanks
I love your videos. I'm never throwing away my empty water bottles or food take out containers again. They're all going to be saved for starting seedlings. Thanks Khang. You're such a frugal and humble man
I think tomatoes are the perfect plants for beginning Kratky growers. I grew a bunch of them this year this way from little tiny systems up to 5 gallon buckets with bucket lid net pots and they all did great and produced great.
Hi Khang! What a great video and method. I’m wondering if you have a series of mini tomato videos to see more examples of pruning the top leaves and also if you can share the link to buy the grow lights you’re using and the Aerogarden model with the adaptor for the light bulb. Thank you!
I don't have net cups yet, but I have been using old solo cups, cut the bottom off and cut a slit on the side and you fold over itself, fits to almost any size hole 3"-2"
You made this so simple for making this so simple ! I'm going to.start my lettuce and peppers next week. At the 4 week mark, i noticed that you have something that resembles brown Peeples, what is it ?
Love to see updates , I'm doing some of peppers and tomatoes . I'm hoping to get fruits from both . I have learned all of what I am doing from you . Thank you so much for sharing these videos .
I appreciate your very informative videos. Please put a link to the replacement led bulbs that you used to replace the Aerogarden CFL bulb in this video. I bought the adapter to switch to a standard bulb base. I bought a corn cob type that was too big to fit in the Aerogarden after adding the replacement connector like you advised in the video. Can’t find a small enough size on Amazon.
Outstanding work but what I’ve noticed is the reason they grew better in the Aero garden was because the water is aerated buy a pump inside if you would just add a little hose and a small air pump they would be so much more amazing try it out I’m sure you’ll love it good luck and continue doing your thing
I love your use of water bottles for the Kratky method! ! Your aero garden system is very interesting! What would you recommend?? I do need something with lights!
I have been studying this. I have started some Tiny Tim cherry tomatoes. When they flower, since I am growing them indoors and I do not have bees inside my house I was worried about this. From what I have read, I need to get small artist style paintbrushes and tickle the flowers to get pollination. Tiny Tim cherry tomato plants are small and compact so they are not going to get really big.
I see some small round rocks not mentioned, which I am guessing to help hold the plant in place when it gets bigger ? I would like to see the next stage set up when the plants get bigger with cages and all. Thanks for the video.....
Great video. Doesn’t pythium eventually take over? Even with airstones and a chiller i cant avoid root rot. Do you use beneficial bacteria or something?
Hi Kangh I watch you videos all the time. Very construction, informative and explained well. what strength nutrients do you use for you Kratky tomatoes?
Great info. Newbie question, if I want to propagate house plant for root, should I cover the area that root will grow? At the moment I put it in the glass jar and watching the roots grow.
My patio faces the west where the sun beats down on my plants without the mercy of shade trees or an overhanging awning, any suggestions for growing container plants hydroponically? Will tomatoes in this much light and heat hydroponically?
Thanks for uploading this great vdo...I have gone through so many vdos on hydroponics here but this one is the best..u have explained everything one needs to know about hydroponics..thanks for making the concept so simple to understand...👍
I have a habanero I did this with back at the beginning of this year just straight tap water and it's still alive, I fill it back up with water rarely because it lasts so long.. It's a great way to get seedlings started with good roots but once it gets 6" it doesn't want to grow anymore. It puts out new leaves and drops the old ones but nothing more. Doesn't branch out, just stays as a stem basically. Can't wait to see if it'll produce better this coming year when I plant it vs my seed to ground habanero I did this year.
You vacationed in Phuket, Thailand???? I"ve been there three times from U.S.A..Last year I spent a month at Patong Beach walkimg the warm sunny shoreline and enjoying the great food...thanks for the video....
U can bore tiny holes at the side of each container at the same level as the bottom of the net holders to aid ease of refilling to that height and to ensure no overfilling.
Khang, Im shocked you are growing a tomato plant in a tiny water bottle! I tried the Kratky method in a 32 oz mason jar and it just grew to be mostly a huge vine with leaves every 6 in or so up the vine. Never got flowers until I took it outside and had transplanted it to a 5 gal bucket. I kept it under full spectrum lights from seedlings on. Im so perplexed!
I should appreciate for your sharing info. regarding this type of planting just I'd like to know which form of planting more profitable in general (not as a fun) in soil or in water. Thanks for your reply
I am definitely going to try it out thanx i just need a light system I have a old fish tank that I used the light the hood for some little plants that I've started then I'll move on to different stuff as I'm learning thank you so much for your help and ideas
that's cool!! I have a few net pots and i've been making semi hydro containers for my orchids for a while now. I'm going to try this and see if i can get a tomato to grow and maybe a few herbs. I can get them to germinate but I always kill them with neglect ♥♥
Khang Starr! In your Video Comparison of 1 in Nutrients and 1 in Soil.Did you Use a Good Soil with Perlite, Worm Castings and etc? Or was is some just Old Cheap Soil that was out of your Yard? Ty! Jack
What type of nutrients would be best liquid or granular also what kind would be ideal for veggies i want to start growing my own with all the crap veggies out there i have my rockwool and both my ph meter and my meter to read my nutrient amount for my plants currently waiting on my light kit anything will help gonna be growing kratky method
Hi Khang! Seriously love your videos and sincere thank you for everything you show/teach us. I have a question I was hoping you could help with? When you list items used in the video, I have noticed that you use grow bag saucers? I was worried that using the saucers with grow bags would keep the bag/dirt too damp on the bottom. Is this not the case? All my plants in grow bags are on my patio. Thank you again!!
Saucer is a must for growbags. Last season I didn't use any, and I noticed that all my water runs right off due to soil compaction. With the saucer, water sticks around and get absorbed better. The key is never to overwater.
You convinced me.. I'm gonna grow one of my peas in Kratky to see how it does. In fact, I'll grow 3 peas. One in Kratky hydro, one in coco hydro(watering 10% of the container volume per day) and one in coco soilLike(slow release topDress ferts). That's gonna be interesting.
why do you place the seedling into the rock wool? Could you just use an insert instead of using the fiber-based rock wool? Also, when you pour the nutrient solution on top of the leaves, does the solution cause the leaves to burn under the grow light?
When you fed your plants on another video that was in soil, you mentioned to give them hydro food. How much water extra did you water if any, I heard you say you gave them a little bit everyday, I need to feed some of our plants the same way the soils isn't working out for them, thanks for video!
What are the differences between different net cups sizes, for this method. When should a larger one be used, if ever, and why? Is this little 1 1/2 net cup you are using for this tomato plant too small if the plant gets real big? Will the net cup size be a limiting factor in final plant size? Thanks.
@ Hounie Hogarth.... Hi i can help if u want Im growing some girls scout cookies if you want i can send you a vid. On all the steps... if u like reply back ...
Or you can put the net cup upside down over the bottle mark it and cut it with a utility knife, just trying to help people without a hole saw, hope you don’t mind, great video.
Has anyone tried starting tomatoes with hydroponic then transplanting outdoors when the weather warms up? I assume you would need to do some type of hardening.
Hi all the way from tropical Singapore... can u share if its possible to use home made fertilizers(fermented organic waste) for both hydrophonics and soil grown plants? Any recipe you may know of? Appreciate and thanks!
Thank you. Excellent video. I love this method. Will try with my hot pepper. Do you have to lift the net pot to add more nutrients? Is there a way to see the nutrient level from outside ?

Would you suggest doing this with pepper seedlings, at least when they're small?

BTW, if someone doesn't have access to a drill or hole-saw, a razorblade or knife can get the job done.

Thank you Khang for your video. Do you worry much about mosquitoes or other kinds of insects?
Not when I'm doing this inside, but yes, I do worry about mosquitoes when done outside. You can use mesh nets to deter them.
This dood is the reason why I’m breeding peppers lol I will give tomatoes a try
I tried this system with the aero machine it flowered but the flowers dropped never faulted do they have to be pollinated?
I like this modern technology in gardening, thanks for sharing, I learned new things in your video.
