I haven't even watched more than 2 minutes of the video, you brought out the Cacao Du Bresil ink. I reached in my desk, and I pulled my bottle of it out. A forgotten gem of fountain pen inks.
Thanks for sharing this, it made me reflect on my use. Funny, I have go-to pens and go-to inks but I rotate among my favorites and switch that around. Paper for me is almost always TR. It’s pricier but my pens all perform better on TR and make my inks stand out!
Just paired up my TWSBI Eco Indigo with Bronze trim with Noodler's Blue Upon the Plains of Abraham, and the perfect pairing just strikes a cord with me. Hits the right notes, at the right time, in the right way.
I also like a decent blue ink. My favourite combo I keep going back to is my Black Asvine V126 fine nib with Diamine Majestic Blue. It shows up the sheen beautifully on the three papers I use midori, Rhodia and Tomoe River.
I would recommend to give the Graf von Faber-Castell Hazelnut Brown a shot. (if you're at all into browns?) I'm so in love with that stuff. Super fluent but fast drying. Written with a wetter nib it appears almost black, on dryer nibs it's like the outer skin of an unpeeled almond.
Wonderful combos! I love the nibs! Montegrappa Extra and Montegrappa black ink. Benu Juno Pelikan Rose Quartz. Sailor Blue Dwarf and Sailor Manyo Komagi ink are my combos! Endless notebooks and Galen Everyday Book.
I need to get a sample of Cacao du Bresil, it looks like a great fall color. My mostly permanent pen & ink combos are a petrol Lamy Safari and Taccia Sabimidori, Herbin Lie de Thé in a vintage skyline, and I usually have Sailor Manyo Nadeshiko in a Twsbi 1.1 stub that makes the ink look fantastic despite being my biggest pain in the neck pen. I almost always have Lamy Turquoise in one pen or another, and lately Poussière de Lune too. I’m an absolute magpie with inks.
The Coronation Blue is a nice ink for sure. I have been using Diamine Regency Blue which is a beautiful dark blue that pops off the page. But it only comes in a 30ml triangular bottle. If it is not too expensive I will go for the Pure Pens version I loved the Private Reserve Ultra Black but the dry time is ridiculous, especially for an ink that is supposed to be fast drying. I found Diamine Onyx Black. Another winner. Thanks for the comparisons.
Ok so I wasn't the biggest fan of the Quirky Leaf or Coronation Blue when you showed them first but now that I got a full look at different angles like that...Weellll, I'm willing to admit when I'm wrong and will look into some samples soon.
I have a Parker 25 and it seems to love the Lamy Copper Orange ink I have. It's a very well behaved orange in general that have been in most of my pens.
Pure Pens have some nice inks, I use Coronation Blue a lot too, also Windermere, both part of my recent obsession with blue-black, and challengers to an all time favourite, Rohrer and Klingner Verdigris. One of their most interesting colours is Cwm Idwal, looks blue in the bottle, comes out dark green on the page, perhaps with a hint of red?
Pelikan have cheap, good quality nice colors... I really like Platinum and Faber Castell inks. Monteverde ones don't like the weather here were I live, dry fast even the bottle on cool safe place. But leaving that aside nice inks. I check your videos to consider inks and some pens, I already took notes from this video. Greetings.
Excellent video. One of my favorite channels about fountain pens. I have about a hundred pens but I always use the same ink (black and blue)...I think it's time to experiment with options...videos like this feed the hobby!..Greetings!
Lovely combos. I keep my Cherry Blossom Namiki Yukari Chinkin inked up with Pilot Yama Budo and my Visconti Homo Sapiens inked up with Stilo&Stile Roman Bronze Oxidation. Aside from that, everything is subject to change.
That quirky leaf ink looks great-especially with the pen pairing. Would just be a little hard to use on a regular basis, being lighter and so reminiscent of Spring
I'm an Octopus Fluids convert. Considering the range of colours available for the Write & Draw line this was a game changer for me personally. I kind of get why other manufacturers have document inks in 2-3 colours, but I just wanted more variety. I also wish someone would come up with a line of dual shading inks that go beyond the pastels and purples; something more vibrant, please. Wouldn't it be fun if we had inks with colour variations of glitter inks but without the glitter? The OFs flush out nicely, unlike glitter.
My paired pens are a Pelikan M405 with blue stripes with Pelikan Royal Blue, my vintage Pelikan M400 with Pelikan Dark Green, a Pelikan M200 with a turquoise barrel teamed with Pelikan Turquoise, a Montegrappa Team Fox with Waterman Audacious Red, and my Montblanc 24 with Diamine Green Black. It's fun pairing inks and pens!
@@mikeerler5465 I've just never like Audacious Red. Bought a bottle and inked up. First stroke went "meh". It's just missing something. Mayne I should try to mix it. Perhaps some blue or black to it
Very interesting, for sure. I like the idea of keeping a pen limited to one ink only [at least up to a point]. For my MB149 I only use MB Midnight Blue. I know that sounds snobbish, and it is sorta. Your choice of the Pelikan 4001 Royal Blue is excellent. Here’s a tip. Next time you buy, go for the 50 ml bottle. It’s shaped differently with a kind of pen rest built in. Should be a bit cheaper per ml, too. Thanks for the interesting video as always.
I feel very plain these days with my ink selections. In my Visconti HS, I use platinum carbon black, and if I switch its noodlers baystate blue. My Lamy 2k only has platinum carbon black. My twsbi 700rvac's one baystate blue and the other emerald of chivor every now and then. Those inks have never done me wrong.
Great spread of pens, DB. I really like your including the Jinhao x159 with all those rather costly models. Thanks for the heads-up about ink safety for the Pelikan ink in older pens. I love your 1950's brown striped Pelikan 400. Did someone say "Grail Pen"?
I’m still getting back into fountain pens after a hiatus (the second time that’s been true), and I have a lot of pens and quite a few inks that I have not used yet, but I do have two pen/ink combinations that will be fixed points in my writing for as long as the pens last and the inks are available. I have a vintage (but not as old as I am, I think) Pelikan M481 all black with a medium nib which has, ever since I have owned it, always been filled with Herbin “Lierre Sauvage” - that’s currently on loan to my wife as part of her deciding whether she wants to go back to using fountain pens - and I have a (currently out of rotation) Pelikan Souverain M200 demonstrator with a medium nib (that I need to replace some time, because the ultrasonic cleaner took some of the plating off) which has always had since I’ve owned it, and always will have, Diamine New Century “Vermillion” in it. I have some ideas what inks might end up going in some of my other pens, but nothing nailed down yet - and in some of them I am using up whatever appropriate cartridges I have (a mixture of Diamine short international standard, Parker Quink short, and Sheaffer, each in its relevant pen), because I’m too tight-fisted to throw away cartridges that I could write with.
Just discovered Birmingham Pen Company inks and they're my new favorite thing. Love their Iron Ore in my Homo Sapiens Bronze Age and their Tesla Coil in my Lamy 2000. Burly wood is perfect for my Mythos Apollo and Firefox lights up my Scribo La Dotta. I use Platinum Carbon Black in my King of Pen for signatures. My Funky Lake Estie gets Robert Oster Bondi Blue for a near perfect pen/color match.
I am only recently beginning to associate particular inks with particular pens, but only based on matching the color. So when I am using multiple pens on a drawing, I can reach for the right pen. Because only recently have I filled out the spectrum with pens.
Hi Doooodlebud! I’m really enjoying watching your pen and ink pairings! Love that Pelican Royal blue ink and the Quirky Leaf! Couple weeks ago I used your discount (thank you sir!) and bought the Estie Journaler in Winter White! Which inks would you suggest I try with this? Looking forward to your suggestions! Also, do you know of any nibmeisters in Victoria? Thanks again, kari fox in Victoria 😊
White pen which ink? Tough one! I feel a gray ink for some reason? Don't know any Nibmeister folks on the island. Sometimes you gatta just bite the bullet and mail the pen off and wait the 3,4,5months+ ☹️. Sorta why I self taught.
I'm more of a teal, darker green, purple, dark pink ink enjoyer. Currently using Robert Oster River of Fire and DeAtramentis Elderberry in the two pens I have inked. Not really a fan of black / blue inks, after years of school & college insisting on only blue and black ink being acceptable.
Lamy Dark Lilac in my Pelikan M1000 Renaissance Brown is a great combination. I’m struggling though to find the right ink for my 823 clear, I’ve tried Diamine Sapphire Blue, Oxblood and currently on Eau de Nil, but none have hit the spot. Love the pen and the inks individually but not convinced by the combinations so far.
I find brighter colors look nice in a clear body, but might not hit the spot going on the page depending on preference. When in really stuck I try different black/grey inks with lots of shading.

You mention nov 1st is fountain pen day and they do sales. Any recommendations for a new pen? I really liked the look of my jinhao I think its called sailor style? I'd want one that looks the same style but with a pop off cap so I dont break it 😅
Have you ever used TWSBI Black? I have a vintage pilot elite and I've found absolutely nothing tops it in there, primarily due to how extremely thin that extra fine nib is. The extra saturation really comes through in a way that most other inks don't with such thin lines. That private reserve black looks like a good ink no doubt, but it doesn't seem as dark to my eye (admittedly saturation is never going to come through as well in a youtube video as it would in real life).
Is the Coronation Blue ink by Pure Pens the Pure Pens company based in Wales? Could be ore than one. If so... They are 15 minuites from my home and go there all the time. Haven't seen coronation blue there. Will have to look. Wonder if it was a limited run for the kings coronation.
