    Have a couple technical suggestions-your needle will gum up if you see thru the tape so keep the tape to the furthest edge so you won't sew thru it. Also a zig zag around the plastic is helpful to catch both edges. Just in case you aren't lined up perfectly like our instructor 🙂

    This is such a great pattern. I have sewn over 200 masks - strip and cup style - but I think this origami style mask is superior. Especially the clear mouthpiece. I work with a lot of hearing impaired people, and I know this will be appreciated. Thank you so much for sharing this.

    Aside from the window, this is an excellent design. I have made adjustments to it and perfected it in a way. My doctor said it is a great design that covers the face properly. I enlarged the pattern a little and I don't string an elastic through the sides, I use a quarter inch wide by 7 inches and sew the ends on to the top & bottom of the mask. Don't fold it over, just tuck it in the unsewn triangles. Then sew it in there. Perfect

    If you use the tape on all sides of the vinyl it will help close up the holes from the sewing needle in the window. Just get a nonstick needle first. Cuz the tape will really gum up a regular needle.

My only "tweak" was I didn't want holes through both layers of the window, so i sewed into the outer piece and used fusible them tape on the inner window edges. Seems to work ok. I’ve been following a similar, but not quite the same, pattern and made about 20 for family and work mates so far - but not with so much top stitching & no window. I’m going to give this one a go next. Very good tutorial video with good step by step and closeups. Just wondering if the plastic steams up when breathing though. Love the fabric choices too. Not just for lip reading- it’s much less intimidating for very small children to be able to see more of the facial features in those around them wearing masks

    One thing I just found out from an interpreter advocate, it should be a solid color. Dark colors for white and light skinned people. Colors such as black, dark purple, hunter green, etc. For African American skin, light colors such as a pale yellow, pale pink and light blue. At least that is what they have taught interpreters all these years. I know some want patterns but it would be too much because at best, only 30% of words can be read on the lips. It's fatiguing on the eyes.

    With the small kids going back to school, I honestly think this is useful for teachers too! Just want to check, has anyone have experience wearing this for extended hours? Would the plastic fog up with the respiration? And since there's an impermeable plastic on the mask, does it make it harder to breath? Also, could you share what needle size would be suitable to sew the plastic? I suppose this will have to be hand-washed too, right?

    I made masks for myself and my student. They were easy to make and fit great but when I wear it, and talk for over half an hour, I get a lot of moisture build up. By the end of my 50 minute tutoring time, the vinyl is dripping wet on the inside. I tried different methods of keeping it from fogging and found that dawn dishwashing liquid worked best for me. The vinyl isn’t fogging but is gathering moisture. Any suggestions?

    • @SewingSeedsOfLove
      @SewingSeedsOfLove  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Darlene Larson I don’t have a solution for it right now but the advice I can think of is to change your masks regularly. More moisture comes out from our mouths especially when we talk a lot. If we were using a regular mask, that would have been absorbed into the lining fabric. In this case, the main part of it is the vinyl which does not absorb and so moisture starts collecting. The only scientific way I can think of is to have a valve so that moisture can escape. But it defeats the purpose in the covid case.
      Otherwise, use a double gauze cotton for your lining, it is more absorbent than regular cotton.

    i just made this and i have to say your directions were great and precise. i am concerned that with the plastic one would be breathing in too much co2 and not enough oxygen. What are your thoughts on this and if you have any suggestions to fix this.

    Do you have exact measurements for your face mask sizes? I’ve downloaded the patterns but they contain no measurements. I don’t have a printer so I have to draw them out myself.

    • @SewingSeedsOfLove
      @SewingSeedsOfLove  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, is it possible that you ask a friend who works in an office to get them printed for you? The sizings are calibrated proportionately and it would be difficult to get an accurate measurement when rounded off.
      Alternatively if you have a computer screen big enough, you can increase the pattern and physically measure (with a ruler in hand) the 1” test square till it measures 1”x1” exactly and you could then trace it off the screen. Hope that helps.

    Without a proper fit at the nose (wire, pipe cleaner, anything to customize fit for nose shapes) air will escape upward and steam glasses for those who wear glasses. I love thisconcept for all customer service settings because we never know which customers might need to read our lips. As retail employees go back to work, I think this is a thing we need to think about.

    • @SewingSeedsOfLove
      @SewingSeedsOfLove  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      A Masquerade I do wear glasses and I haven’t had any issue with fogging of glasses with this style so far. But having said that, a nose wire can easily be inserted and concealed. Just slide it in and sew around it to secure before the clear window is stitched up.
