How long should I wait to tell my parents? Should I wait until I’m in college to hardcore start transitioning?

Dear Sam, Trying to figure yourself out can be very frustrating and a long process. Just know that there's many more people that feel the same way! I realised my "status" when I watched a video of a trans man explaining how he felt before transitioning. I noticed how that exactly matched my own feelings. I finally had a word for all of the things I felt. Luckily, there's a lot more online now that we can use to educate ourselves and those around us. Maybe these pages help you a bit: www.pflag.org/search?keys=transgender&type=resource & www.glaad.org/transgender/resources. Finding a therapist or someone that specialises in gender issues is probably a good idea. They will assist you to overcome any of the obstacles you might face. Are there maybe also any queer cafés or LGBT* youth centers in your area? Try to figure out what makes you (more) comfortable, such as wearing boxer briefs or getting a haircut. Only you know what makes you feel more comfortable and there's no right or wrong way. Please don't get discouraged when you look in the mirror and things aren't immediately "right" in your eyes. It will take a while. But believe in yourself and your feelings, don't give up. In terms of binding: Please bind savely by using a proper binder that fits your body. Maybe ask a supportive friend whether you can use their address for shipping. Otherwise, say it's for cosplay. Layers are your best friend and don't worry if things aren't 100% flat; most cis men aren't either. Your parents aren't entitled to know everything.. but just know that it usually takes a while (in my case about 3 years..) until they fully understand and change pronouns. It might be easier for them to fully support you should you pursue HRT when you give them a bit of time beforehand to get used to it; it's only fair. For a person that has never experienced gender dysphoria it's extremely hard to imagine what that's like. Just know that even if things don't seem that great at first and you feel like your parents' behaviour hurts your feelings, it's often not intentional. They usually want to protect you from any harm and want you to be happy and healthy. Sit down and explain your feelings when you are ready to do so. No pressure! The process of transitioning doesn't start when you begin a HRT or have a surgery; it starts when you firstly decide that you want to change things. It's a long process and sometimes not that easy. But only you know what's right for you and I wish you all the best on this journey of figuring yourself out! :) I hope this helped a little bit. -Chris

a good way to get a binder without your parents knowing is saving up enough to buy a gc2b and then buy a prepaid gift card (like a visa card) at a drug store so you can order it online without your parents knowing. If you’re very scared about your parents getting the mail before you, you can send it to a supportive friend’s house.
Sam Robertson some therapists will talk to you online, via phone calls or Skype, it might be worth investigating. It takes a long time to figure yourself out, and no one ever does completely - wishing you strength and courage in your journey x
