SURIGAONON Language on Siargao Island (Part 1)

Siargao is one of the most famous places in the Philippines, but do people know what is the native language of this paradise island?
Before, Siargao had a very small population with very few tourists. But because of its excellent surfing spots, its reputation grew. Now, it has booming tourism attracting people from all over the world. While surfing is the main activity, people also come to explore, eat organic food, do yoga, and party.
As Siargao develops, let us not forget about the original people of the island who welcome visitors so warmly. What do Siargaonons like to do? What language do they speak? How does it sound? The next time you travel to Siargao, try to learn some phrases of Surigaonon language!
In this video (Part 1), we learn some basic facts about Surigaonon language, and Firth tries to find out if there are native terms for common surfing words.

An Siargao isa sa pinakasikat na mga lugar sa Pilipinas, pero nahibayo kaha an mga tawo kun uno an lumad na sinultihan nan inin paraiso na isla?
Sa una, gamay ra an mga tawo na naghuya sa Siargao, gamay ra sab an mga turista. Pero tungod sa karajaw nan ija mga surfinganan na lugar, nahimo ini na bantugan. Sa pagkakuman, an ija nagsulig na turismo nakadani nan mga tawo gikan sa nagkalain-lain na mga lugar sa tibuok kalibutan. Mintras an surfing amoy ila pinaka-una na aktibidad, an mga tawo mokanhi sab sa Siargao para surojon an isla, mokaon nan mga organiko (natural) na mga pagkaon, mag yoga sanan mag silibrar/ magkumbira.
Mintras nagpadajon pag-uswag an Siargao, dili nato hikalimtan an mga orihinal na mga tawo nan isla na mainiton moatiman sa mga bisita. Unoy ganahan himuon nan mga Siargaonon? Uman an sinultihan na ila taggamit? Umay boses / tingog nan ila lingwahi? Sa sunod na mobiyahi kaw pa Siargao, testingi pagtuon an pipila ka mga sultihon sa ila Siargaonon na sinultihan.
Sa ini na video (Part 1), nahibaw-an ta an pipila ka primero na kamatuoran bahin sa Siargaonon na sinultihan. Taningkamutan ni Firth na mahibaw-an kun jaon bay mga lumad na mga termino para sa kasagaran na sulti sa surfing.

I'm filipina but grew up in australia. Tagalog is my mother tongue however, I'm stuck in the 2000s way of speaking so my tagalog is very old-school. I don't add much english. I sort of understand the modern way filipinos seem to speak nowadays when I meet someone who has freshly left Philippines. Though my ears tingle 🤣 again.. really really cool to come across your channel!! Do hope you're looking after yourself and sending you all the warmth and strength for the challenges ahead 🙌

Awesome video! As someone who's set foot in "Surigaonon lands" would you say the language is still different enough to be classified as different from cebuano? Or is there too much mixing happening? Also, do you know any online resources to learn Surigaonon?
If anyone ever responds, I’d like to know where I could learn Surigaonon as well! 😊
Northern part of Surigao speaks Cebuano, while the Southern part speaks Surigaonon. Both Surigaonon and Cebuano have higher mutual intelligiblity compared to other Philippine languages, but in day to day conversations, both spokers would still have a hard time understanding each other. So yes, Surigaonon is a language of it's own.
Thanks for the explanation. Yes, Surigaonon and Cebuano are closely related languages, but they are different enough to be classified as separate languages. People commonly codeswitch (mix) the two languages in the province of Surigao, but if you ask someone to speak pure Surigaonon, a Cebuano person will only understand part of it.

Is it different from cebuano?
Depends. Deep Surigaonon is quite different from Cebuano, but it is getting quite mixed na.
It has more similarities with the Bohol variety of Cebuano ("Bol-anon"), especially with the hard "j" sounds like gajod.
It's not that different, You can understand Suriganon if you speak only Cebuano Bisaya.
Surigaonon is a dialect of Cebuano language 80 percent of its words are cebuano
pretty much, I don't know why Surigaonon is considered a different language. My friend stayed in Surigao for 3 days and he was already fluent in Surigaonon despite only knowing Bisaya (ceb) prior to going there. I speak Bol-anon which is also a dialect of Bisaya and I can understand 97% of Surigaonon. It all just depends on exposure, and unfortunately because Bisaya was never standardized unlike Tagalog so you have all these offshoots. If you put someone from Cebu in Surigao, I am confident he will be fluent in Surigaonon in less than 5 days.
