    In today’s video I dive in and take a look to see if Grabbed by the Ghoulies really is as average as it’s reputation suggests. Enjoy!

    I remember the early 2000s was an awful time for game reviewers. So many close-minded reviewers who worked at big publications were writing totally unprofessional game reviews and bashing games over the nit-pickiest things without considering that some people would enjoy the game that they are giving a bad score to.

      Late reply but yes it is how did it get bad reviews? Because it didn’t play like other beat em up games and dumb journalists can’t play anything unless it caters to them that even stands to today u can’t take their word for nothing. This game was a awesome beat em up with cool enemies with personality wish it had a remaster or just a sequel/reboot with proper advertisement this time I think it could do well now since rare is partnered with Xbox and it would get attention from ads more than it could back then and beat em ups are decently played these days and since this one is unique fighting monsters and stuff and made by rare if launched on gamepass it would get played. I love the rare style games and how they talk they have a goofy charm to them. Also grabbed by the Ghoulies is meant to be grabbed by the balls but Ghoulies replaces the word I just realized that even the title is hilarious. Played through it a little bit ago took me 3 hours and it was just as good as I remember.

    I really think that there were 2 things that led to this game not being well-received.
    1) After the N64, people were just expecting a platformer from Rare, not a beat-em-up.
    2) Excluding Devil May Cry, Ninja Gaiden, and God of War, beat-em-ups were generally poorly reviewed in that gen. I think this has to do with the overall move away from arcade style experiences that kind of died with the Dreamcast.
    I've seen this game resurface a lot lately, and people have started to appreciate it for what it is. Great video, as always!

      I would say as a beat m' up it's not as solid as those 3 you listed but it's certainly worth playing at least. That and Viva Pinata are two Rare games from the Xbox era I really recommend.

      waynski1457 funny how Rare’s rise to fame actually started with the Beat em up called Battletoads but then I see why after Banjo Kazooie they were expecting the home console exclusive 3D platformer genre

      Probably would have at least had a slightly bigger audience had Rare stayed with Nintendo as I could see it being kind of the perfect companion game to Luigi’s Mansion had it come out on Gamecube as originally intended, kind of like Diddy Kong Racing to Mario Kart 64 and Banjo-Kazooie to Super Mario 64.

    this game rocked, the combat, being able to pick up literally anything to defend yourself, the monster designs and their different mechanics, all really fun. It is totally underrated. I remember getting to the last level in one day it was so addictive and then being stuck on the final boss and stopped playing it for months. Then came back few months later and beat the game. Fun stuff. The skeletons exploding is very satisfying.

    I was terrible at this game as a kid but I loved it. The memory that sticks out in my head the most is just a random hallway filled with mummies slapping each other around. You couldn't kill them but you could break a can and have a mini version of yourself go ahead and beat them up for you. It was just so fun watching them all beat each other up

  • @masterpage69420

    I hate how critics always take things from an adult standpoint. THIS IS A KID'S GAME. It's supposed to be simple and fun. Yes it was simple but it was still fun. To be fair it was quite challenging especially for the majority of us who played this as kids

    • @implantgames
      @implantgames  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I have no idea if this is directed at me or the old reviewers. In any case, when I was a kid Super Mario Bros. was a "kid's" game, now it's considered a classic. There should be no reason for a "kid's game" to be lacking in quality and depth.

    Yeah, Grabbed by the Ghoulies is honestly one of my favorite games. I feel like it really suffered from being on the Xbox. The Xbox markted itself as the "mature" console with "serious" games and "realistic" graphics. The kind of console a teenager who wants to be an adult would get. Grabbed by the Ghoulies doesn't take itself super seriously. Its silly and fun, which meant it was not suited to the xbox.

I will forever hold a grudge against the people who called it bad and robbed it of having any chance of a sequel. I feel like if this game had come out during the age of youtubers and lets plays this wouldn't have happened. There are plenty of games today that don't get good reviews by critics but are LOVED by players. I feel like this game would have been one of those games where the critics hated it but the youtubers and fans would have loved it, and that would have catapulted it's sales. It's truly tragic.

    The game was OK. Here's the problem with this game: instead of empowering the player, as most games do, it continually handicapps them every step of the way. I get that it's the point of the game, but that doesn't make it any less frustrating.
    The constant limiting of available life. The you can't attack this thing, but you can attack these mechanic. Oh by the way, don't destroy the environment, but we're forcing you to, to get all the books.

      Don't get me wrong, I love Rare. Absolutely ADORE them. I hold the grand majority of their catalogue in high esteem. From the SNES era all the way up until Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts. Heck, I loved both Star Fox Adventures and BK: N&B. THOSE are underrated titles.
      That being said, Grabbed by the Ghoulies simply didn't live up to the decades of expectation of quality that their library offers -- save for their more recent titles (excluding Sea of Thieves -- I haven't played it yet). The controls are fine, the combat is fine -- if not a bit repetitive, but the flaws ARE glaring. I kept feeling that the game was fighting me during its entire duration, holding me back from loving it much as its predecessors.
      It's sad, because I wanted to. I knew going in that it wasn't well received. I was set on liking despite its flaws and the critical reception it received, but I couldn't.

      MaxxSkywalker that’s why I love it, you have to think outside of the box, like the one room where there’s the vampire with the key in it, but the only way to kill the vampire is by summoning the reaper and having HIM kill it.

    • @Impalingthorn
      @Impalingthorn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I get this perspective, but that was also kinda the point. The entire game is structured in a way where each room is meant to present an individual challenge of its own, which leads to a gigantic grey area where some rooms were incredibly easy while others were incredibly hard. That spectrum slowly shifts ever slightly towards the latter as the game progresses, but I think it was for the better. I personally remember many rooms from that game just due to how difficult they became later on. They challenged me and I really had to work for those victories, and although frustrating at the time, overcoming them and seeing the next room itself became a reward. Aside from a scarce few segments, i forget many of the easier rooms in favor of these harder ones.

    This game is amazing. I especially love the theme. The camera was very easy to get used to for me and the difficulty was annoying but so rewarding. That applies to the challenges mostly and the few laboratory rooms in the story. In the challenges you had to figure out the fastest or best possible ways to beat them using the soups and the weapons, and try again and again but it was never boring. And the reward for beating everything was the best ever. 21th challenge. Took me a while to beat but I did it.

You're right, it's such a beautiful game, too, the wonderful cel-shade style and all, very Banjo-Kazooie-esque in humor, art style, music, and tone too. I also like to think of this game as being sort of like a spiritual successor to one of the most awesome games of the 16-bit era, LucasArts' Zombies Ate My Neighbors! ...At least conceptually, what with you being a teenager who fights monsters with stuff like water pistols.

    Not just underrated, but a great fucking game.
    I have never seen a review for this game that didn't essentially bash this game for not being another game; particularly, people never judged this game on its own merit. And on ots own merit, it is a fun little beat'em up that oozes personality and charm.
    Listen, Donkey Kong 64 and Banjo Tooie are among my favorite games of all time, I get people expected something different, but this was a great game that deserved a lot more love and we're likely never going to see the sequel they had intended now.
    People will bitch about the Kinect games and how Sea of Thieves is quickly becoming an excuse to sell microtransactions, but I don't give a fuck. Rare and Microsoft GOT there because people wouldn't give a genuine work of passion a fair shot, whether it was this game or Kameo. Games like these aren't coming out of Rare anymore and it's the faults of all the snooty wanna-be internet critics who thought they were being a smartass by ripping this game to shreds. Well, Rare fucking heard you. I hope your two minutes of clout were worth it.
    PS: If it sounds like I'm mad, it's because I am. I have seen the DUMBEST criticisms lobbed at this game from people referring to it as a Luigi's Mansion knockoff to people trying to judge it as a HORROR GAME. People will do anything to avoid acknowledging this game for what it is rather than what it isn't and it cost us everything.

    Rare have never said as such but you know how Banjo Kazooie is regarded as being partly inspired by Mario 64? Or a companion piece if you like. I wouldn't be surprised if Grabbed by the Ghoulies, originally due to be released on the Gamecube, was partly inspired by Luigi's Mansion and that Rare would have regarded it as a kind of companion piece. Both games even use dual thumbsticks in combat and have health meters on each enemy. Yes, Rare had some history in making comedically creepy levels, e.g. Mad Monster Mansion in Banjo Kazooie and the vampire castle in Conker's Bad Fur Day. And how each room is blocked off is very Attic Attack. And it's said that Rare started with the game name 'Grabbed by the Ghoulies' and then thought up what game to make for it. But it'd be very coincidental if Luigi's Mansion didn't have any influence on its development if not actually its genesis. Grabbed by the Ghoulies could have done a LITTLE more with its setting e.g. secret passages but, for a first game in a series, it does exactly what Rare said it would and does it well. I suspect that the comedic tone sometimes felt incongruous to some players who were daunted by the actually rather overwhelming odds in some rooms and having the genuinely creepy Death following you around. It is a classically 'Rare' game though with fantastic art design and sound and a present, I'd say, to any people who'd grown rather tired of backtracking/platformer/shooter games by Rare or by any other studio. I'd play Grabbed by the Ghoulies over any cartoonish mascot on PlayStation.

      There are quite a few cameos and easter eggs hidden throughout. Even right on the title screen, a book opens up basically outlining Rare's greatest hits.

    Even compared to some smaller indie releases priced similarly at $10, this has tremendous value. The main game isn’t too inaccessible, the challenges unlocked through collectibles offer numerous ways to sharpen skills and interesting scenarios, plus there’s a built in hardmode. Whatever happened to this era of game? It’s level of polish is something legendary and it’s too bad that games now are barely complete sometimes, or require “rebalancing” every few weeks.

    Fantastic video, I really love your channel and the content you work on. Yesterday I saw the Darkwatch one and I couldn't agree more with you, Darkwatch still holds up and Grabbed by the Ghoulies is criminally underrated.
    Not sure if you would consider this but I always thought that Psy Ops (Xbox and PS2) was another criminally underrated game. Sure it got some rough edges but it was an amazing action game. I still hope that Psy Ops or The Suffering (both Midway) would return someday. Unlikely but hope never dies ^^
    Keep up the great work man :)

    I absolutely adored this game when it came out in 2002. I was 10 and this was the game I would stay up and sneak into the basement to play. Unfortunately I never got past the Baron. I'm dying to play this again just to see if I can beat it. Does anyone else remember the ballroom where the ghouls were dancing to a remix of the theme music?

    When I got my xbox one it came with rare replay and spent most of my time playing banjo kazooie and then playing a little bit or perfect dark, then I saw grabbed by the ghoulies and what compelled me to play it was the fact it has a beautiful horror setting in a haunted mansion with monsters running around so I played it, I thought the controls where very weird at first but I got used to them so I made my way through the game and came across the grim reaper, that's when I got hooked after seeing the reaper use his scythe like a guitar was amazing

    I recently tried this game for the first time and I have to agree. I think people at the time had built Rare up so much with all the amazing games they had made for the Nintendo 64 and they were expecting something huge for the Microsoft debut, so those incredibly lofty expectations colored the reviews of the time.

    I used to play this back in 2003-2004ish. I think it was a really good game. The only problem I had with it was its difficulty. Maybe it was because I was so young back then? I don't know, I haven't played it since then, it is still around at home in a sack. By the way, can you do a review on Blinx the time Sweeper? That would be really cool to see from you! (If you haven't already, haven't checked so).

    Grabbed by the Ghoulies is a simple yet very enjoyable game. It's not as dynamic and groundbreaking as other games of its time, but it's solid for what it is. It would have been nice if it had gotten a sequel to take the story into some more complex gameplay.

    I think that the one thing this game needed was multiplayer. If they just added that it would’ve created a whole new dimension for Grabbed By The Ghoulies. I found my self not having anything to do once I completed the game, other than the challenges. And even when I got a platinum on all of them (Yes, even 21) I was STILL slightly dissatisfied.

    The main problem I see people have is the attack and the camera being mapped the way they are, calling them bad controls is wrong tho. A great example of bad controls is Bubsy 3D, where the gameplay is not at all built around the controls and in more than one occasion they get in the way of actually playing, whereas in GBTG, the game can be played and enjoyed perfectly fine just by taking a bit to ADAPT, we have all become accustomed to the modern layout of how every game's contols are set up, and this being Rare's first game to be built in a system with 2 analog sticks (originally the gamecube) it's obvious there would be some experimentation with what they felt would be a comfortable control scheme.

  • @FastTquick
    @FastTquick 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Do I think the game is underrated? Well, a bit. While I don't think it's a terrible game, I could see why people might think that this was the point where Rare started to lose its mojo. First, the controls you mentioned that use the right stick to attack and the triggers to move the camera are a bit awkward compared to the normal controls you would find in any other beat em' up game. Secondly, there's the mechanic that forces players to complete a room within a specific set of conditions or else, they die. It's one thing to add a specific set of conditions to an objective, but it's something else to penalize people with death for failing them. I've always hated a mechanic like this since it makes a mission harder to complete for the wrong reasons if not outright cheap. Overall, I think this game, along with Conker: Live and Reloaded were not among Rare's best works. I really think that Rare dropped the ball with their first Xbox games and their pedigree hasn't really recovered since.

    • @implantgames
      @implantgames  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I respect different opinions, especially when I give a glowing review to a generally disliked game. But as a minor correction, you don't die if you fail to follow the rules. Death visits. You can knock Death down, hit him with objects, and use him to take down foes. But you don't die. Unless Death touches you :D When playing the game, I was reminded of Donkey Kong '94 and The Lost Vikings. In those games, if you fail to follow the rules, you have to start over. I like that Grabbed by the Ghoulies offers an additional hurdle, rather than force you to restart.

    This game also shows how important a game's box art is. I was a kid when I saw this game for the first time. I saw it in the bargin bin and thought it was shovelware. I didn't buy it for that reason. But after seeing videos on it, I am curious if I would like it. It does look interesting and unique

    I'm a bit disappointed this game never got a sequel that they hinted at with the ending. I guess it's because of the poor rep it got. I guess people back then didn't much care for these types of games. If rare was anything to go by then they would most likely have expanded upon the original concept. But they did add it to Rare Replay which was a good homage to the game for people who had never originally played it.
