I cannot believe I enjoyed watching PB&J being made for 20 minutes! The amount of joy I get from watching this is shocking. Gotta love our Portuguese chef!
I have traveled a lot abroad due to military service. You love America and America culture (in all of its different flavors). Most Americans will say we have no culture etc. It is not true. Your videos make me happy. Because you make people in my own culture appreciate what we have here. I would love some unique Portuguese dishes as well!
The classic Jelly for PB&J is Concord Grape Jelly. Jelly is not the same as Jam. Jelly is fruit juice thickened with pectin. Jam has fruit solids, it has to be half fruit solids. Even if they are puréed. You can get Concord grape jam too. The grapes are puréed and strained to remove the seeds so it isn’t translucent like the jelly. Concord Grapes are a Native American variety of grape that doesn’t taste like any other grape. Mr Welch invented grape jelly to sell his Concord grape juice. Peanuts and Concord Grapes are both Native American foods.
get a jar of marshmallow fluff to replace the jelly for a fluffernutter, or try mixing in some pb to a thick vanilla milkshake for a great PB shake, lots of options...
Jelly and jam are both fruit-based spreads but differ in their texture and preparation. Jam is made from crushed or pureed fruit, which means it contains pieces of fruit and seeds, giving it a chunkier and looser texture. Jelly, on the other hand, is made from fruit juice, with the seeds and pulp strained out, resulting in a smoother and firmer consistency. Both use sugar and pectin to achieve their set texture, but jelly is more transparent and smoother than jam.
I have never seen someone so happy to make a PB&J sandwich since I was in Kindergarten. However, I am 64 years old and still enjoy a good PB&J. I don't know how you could screw up this sandwich. Even made with Dark Russian Rye, Lumpy Peanut Butter, and Blood Orange Preserves 🍊 it would still be great. It's a slightly different taste profile, but it's still great! Enjoy, my friend. This is the most comfortable comfort food America has to offer.
My all-time favorite sandwich is peanut butter and marmalade on rye bread. Any peanut butter will do, but I prefer smooth unsalted. Absolutely ANY marmalade will do, but the more peel and the less sugar the better. Any rye will do, but I usually go for Beefsteak. Timely historic note: When I "invented" that sandwich, I was living in a little house just off Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, California. Across the street from the beach, not on it. Despite the utter destruction surrounding it after the fire burned through three days ago, that house is still standing intact for more people to invent their favorite sandwiches in.
Pro tip for cleaning peanut butter off the knife, wipe it clean on the other piece of bread first. The peanut butter will come clean from the knife before you reach into the jelly.
USA citizen here, born and raised in Michigan, but currently reside in Florida. I’m 55 years old. Had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich yesterday. Technically, it wasn’t jelly. It was jam. I don’t like jelly as much as I like jam and yes, there is a difference. Peanut butter is Peter Pan and it’s creamy not crunchy, and the jam was strawberry flavor on white bread. I would say 99% of us grew up on it. We ate it almost every day for lunch at school. It’s something you don’t have to worry about refrigerating, it’s easy to make, it’s cheap and most kids love it.
I forgot about Peter Pan! I think PP is sweeter than Jif. Big fan of PP. I'm 55, too, and I don't eat bread, but I *do* still eat pb+j with a spoon. I'm in Ohio. What part of Florida? Love Florida.
It is personal preference-some like smooth, others crunchy. Grape jam is "traditional", but other flavors are also used- including apple butter and marmalade. There is a sandwich called 'the Elvis'. It is toasted peanut butter, banana, and bacon.
Peanut butter actually goes super well with honey. It's a bit messier though, so I like to eat it open-face: toasted bread, peanut butter, and then honey drizzled on top.
I am a professional PBJ maker. Nobody makes better pbj than me. I have the making down to an art. There's even a process to eat it without making a mess. I would post it but heads would explode. So I won't post the methods. You're welcome!
As an American, when someone says "toasted" it means putting the bread in the toaster (the 'machine' next to your coffee maker.) Putting butter on it and putting it on a skillet or in a sandwich press, I'd call that "grilled" like a grilled cheese sandwich. These are fun videos. Thank you for making them!
Thats just pan toasting/pan fried toasting though you can actually do it with a toaster oven (the superior toaster in this chef's opinion) by lightly but completely buttering the bread and toasting butter side up on high, just enaure full coverage because the uncovered portion will burn, the bottom doesnt need butter
I worked at Day's Inn. We toasted bread on the broiler. We never browned it in a skillet, but I don't have a problem with doing it that way, as long as no grease is used.
Wife has a sweet tooth, clearly... I agree the Nutella is more like a dessert. You have to remember, the basic PB&J is something kids can make without mom and dad... adding in toasting removes that for young kids.
Love these videos! One of the best personalities on TH-cam! Also, a really fun variation on the PB&J is adding Lays Potato Chips in the middle 🥔Very classic American variation
Not trying to be snobby but i know its gonna seem that way. Play with me here... Homemade blackberry jelly from wild blackberries. Papa grew peanuts, so homemade peanut butter. Granny made the best homemade bread 200% the best homemade pb & j. Slap it together butter a cast iron skillet and toast the outside. Im from Arkansas. Grew up, raised, and now run my Papa's cattle ranch. I still love a pb & j, even out of all store bought stuff.
my parents grow all their own vegetables and fruits.... save it all throughout the year... make there own spaghetti sauce jams and jellies, and its always 1000x better then store bought crap..... makes a huge difference all in all... they make their own bread and all for anything... so delicious...
It didn’t go with peanut butter, but best jam I ever had was when my grandparents got a bushel of crab apples. Blistered our hands peeling them, they were so hard, and the amount of sugar that was added because they were so sour was alarming in retrospect, but the end result was sooooo good
"Please don't judge me." - Eating Peanut Butter with a spoon. I eat Peanut Butter with a spoon basically any time I'm feeling under the weather. Its got fats, sodium, protein, some vitamins... everything I need to feel a bit better.
I’m 65 and I eat either PBJ or PBB for lunch most work days of the year. I don’t ever get tired of them. I would recommend the PBB being peanut butter on one slice of bread and mayonnaise on the other-the combination of the salty-ish mayo with the salty sweetness of the peanut butter combined with the bright fresh sweetness of the banana is amazing. I also eat banana sandwiches (bread, mayo, and banana). Elvis was very fond of PBB sandwiches.
Jennifer from Michigan here, Peanut butter and strawberry preserves is heavenly. Love your videos! You have a delightful accent and an even more delightful personality! ❤
Just to answer your question. Jam is made from the full fruit while jelly is made from the juice. Jelly has a smoother and is almost clear. If you use citrus fruit, that my friend is marmalade. :)
If you check the ingredients ................ Skippy peanut butter will most likely have more carbs. they tend to add extra sugars . Your Portuguese brand is most likely more natural with few extra additives.
Yeah there is controversy in the US now about the added ingredients in American food that are not healthy. They say European food don't do a lot of the additives. Hopefully RFK Jr will get in to help make American food healthier.
So that you know the difference between Jelly and jam: Jelly has no pieces of actual fruit in it, and is made from strained fruit JUICE. Jam uses actual fruit chunks and is stewed with sugar, then jarred.
Grape jelly is most traditional for sure, but these days it seems strawberry jam is most popular. Concord grape jelly is probably unobtanium in Europe.
Eating a spoon full of PB is a pre-test ritual in america. Its a solid chunk of slow calories that will keep you focused through the hours and hours of testing in the American education aystem Edit: for the record this was supposed to post as a general free-standing comment but YT mobile is crap
As a 71 year old mother and grandma I make a special treat . 2 slices of bread toasted spread creamy peanut butter on one slice of toast on slice 2 add marshmallow cream on top of the marshmallow side drizzle with Hershey syrup. On peanut butter side add Sliced banana. Put together now this is very important slice on the diagonal and enjoy. Make sure to have napkins handy!!!
My favorite is chunky on untoasted white bread with my mothers home made Choke Cherry Jelly. However since we no longer live in Colorado and we don't have Choke Cherries down here in Texas. Strawberry Preserves takes over first place. (Sigh It has been 30 years since I have had a PB&J with Choke Cherry Jelly. )
I'm from New England in America. And I grew up with PB&J's that were made with white bread, smooth peanut butter, and either grape or strawberry jelly. As a child I would occasionally eat a FlufferNutter sandwich as well... which is peanut butter and spreadable marshmallow together. As a kid it was amazing... as an adult... no thank you. Lol. Now as an adult, in addition to PB&J's, I also eat peanut butter, banana, and honey sandwiches, which must be toasted. They are sooo good. And using Nutella is only something I really do on bagels. After the bagel is toasted, I put Nutella on one side, and cream cheese and strawberry slices on the other. The combo together is amazing!
Jif Peanut Butter is the biggest seller in the US. Skippy and Peter Pan are also very popular. I use only white bread with peanut butter. I was surprised to see you try peanut butter and banana. It's one of my favorites. Peanut butter and honey is good too. And as far as which fruit goes best with, any and all fruit spreads will do. You can keep the Nutella ❤
I'd be willing to bet that the Skippy he purchased in Portugal is not the same as the Skippy you'd fine here in the states. Most "American" food brands that are exported to other countries, have different ingredients than the versions sold here... and they are usually fewer. Heinz ketchup is a perfect example. They make one ketchup for export that doesn't have all of the added sugar, "nutrients" and preservatives that they put in our ketchup, because the UK and the EU have banned them. I saw a British couple recently, who tried Heinz ketchup from the UK and from America, side by side and they were shocked by the difference in taste. Apparently, theirs is a lot less sweet than ours and they said that it doesn't have quite as much "zing".
@@bobbiejojackson9448 See, when I've visited the UK, the ketchup there is considerably sweeter than U.S. Heinz to me and has less salt and less sharp vinegar.
My go to technique for PB&J's is to put a lot of peanut butter on one piece of bread, and then a little bit of peanut butter on the other, and then you put the jelly on the piece with little peanut butter and the peanut butter stops the bread from getting soggy and absorbing the jelly. Excited to see what you try next!
1 American 71 yrs old. I have eaten PB & J all my life. I started out liking the Concord Grape jelly. Now I cannot get enough of the Blackberry seedless jam and peanut butter. I went into a Subway sub shop and ordered a PB&J and was told they do not make them. I asked why they are open then. They looked at me like I had horns. lol
Funny you mentioned Subway & PB&J. I worked as a manager at Subway for 4.5 years. I got free food but grew tired of lunch meat sandwiches, so I brought in PB & J to make sandwiches on freshly baked bread. 😋
(Sandi) my fav was peanut butter on wheat with my mother's strawberry fig preserves. Mom flavored fig preserves with strawberry Jello. They tasted like strawberries with firmness of figs.
Minnesota/North Dakota here. 50 years old. Just had peanut butter and raspberry jelly on white bread. Jif is best, Skippy is very close second. Peanut butter is put on with knife. Jelly or jam is scooped out with a spoon and spread with back of spoon. My father had fake teeth so only smooth while living with him. So in my 20's I got extra crunchy, but now I'm back to smooth most of the time. Jelly is juice only, jam is whole fruit. Nutella is great on a whole wheat. I hate it on a soft white. I have to buy smallest Nutella because second half is eaten on just a spoon. Lol.
My uncle who likes pb and banana sandwiches. When I was young my family didn't toast the bread. I only began doing so after toasting a sandwich in a toaster at Subway. I use 2 knives so that I don't cross contaminate my jars. Also, I had a workmate who had a serious allergic reaction to a teeny tiny bit of pb that her husband thought had been completely wiped of the knife before he made her sandwich. Also, this autumn i started making pb and Cranberry sauce sandwiches. I use whole berry. I like the different textures and tanginess of the Cranberry sauce. I use smooth pb without sugar, called Adam's. It is a Seattle, Washington state, USA brand. I use an imported brand of "preserves" "Danish Orchards "-- yes, from Denmark. The recipes include about 25% less sugar than American brands. Again, "preserves" have seeds and fruit in them. I prefer blackberry or raspberry. But will buy their strawberry, if the store only has it in stock.
Fun fact, a common writing assignment given in school in America is to write out very specific instructions for making a PB&J sandwich. This is meant to teach precision and logic. For instance, most people forget to mention that the lid on the peanut butter jar needs to be opened prior to using the knife to scoop out the peanut butter.
I remember a teacher giving us an assignment like that in school except she just said we had to use "A recipe". Me being my weird self who doesn't really like chocolate or peanut butter, my mind COMPLETELY skipped over PB&J and went 'Oh, lets do microwave cheese dip!' My teacher probably had a bunch of varying PB&J instructions and then that. 😂
Peanut butter and Jelly is the first sandwich most kids ever make for themselves, It was my go-to after school snack with a big glass of milk all through my elementary school years.
4 I have them at least 4 times a week in Florida and I'm almost 57 years old never too young or to old sometimes just butter and peanut butter on toast as well or with strawberry Jam
Smooth/creamy for me. 100% I eat right of the jar. Classic American is grape jelly. Grew up on that. As an adult it's blueberry preserves and occasionally orange marmalade.
Traditionally the PB&J is peanut butter and grape jelly which is an excellent combination. I personally prefer strawberry jelly but I've never seen anyone use something besides these two. Pro tip if you make a thick layer of peanut butter around the edge of the bread and a thinner layer in the center portion then fill in the center with a "lake" of jelly you can achieve the perfect peanut butter to jelly ratio...😅
Elvis Presley's favorite sandwich was a peanut butter, banana, and bacon sandwich, also known as the Fool's Gold Loaf. The sandwich was sweet, salty, creamy, and crunchy. What was the sandwich made of? Peanut butter Banana Bacon Bread, such as French white bread or sourdough bread Grape jelly How was it prepared? The ingredients were stuffed into a hollowed-out loaf of bread The sandwich was deep-fried
I prefer Skippy smooth peanut butter and grape jelly. I cannot tell you how many PB&J sandwiches I have eaten in my 63 years on this planet. Must eat with a cold glass of milk. Yes, I clean my knife, lol. IElvis Presley loved peanut butter and banana sandwiches! I’ve never had a toasted PBJ. enjoy seeing you try American favorites. #1
Another good peanut butter treat is to spread into the curve of CELERY. Some will add a few raisins on it and they made up a name called ants on a log. An appetizer.
Andre, I always get that “like” out of the way as soon as I hit play! I know I’ll like it! I like Adam’s Natural. A heaping tablespoon of crunchy is great to add to Top Ramen! PB&J is meant to be slapped together when you’re busy and need something easy. The simpler the better! Otherwise there is no wrong way to do it. :)
A glass of milk is a must. I generally use Jiff peanut butter with either, grape, strawberry or cherry jam or jelly. They are always great on toasted on bread.
Soft white bread, grape jelly (or jam or preserves), and smooth peanut butter is the default. Crunchy peanut butter, raspberry or strawberry or apricot jam or jelly (or even honey), and toast or hard breads or whole grain breads are also all delicious of course, they're just usually things you would have to specify. If you asked for a PB&J and didn't specify anything though, you would probably get what I first mentioned.
I’ve always been a fan of peanut butter and honey. My dad used to keep bees, so honey was always around. Mom also made good jams as well but honey was my overall favourite
•#1... smooth. crunchy is also good, but I like smooth for no bake cookies.. • peanut butter and banana sandwich.. I like to mix honey with the peanut butter.. spread on the bread, then sliced bananas. •I am allergic to chocolate, so I can't eat Nutella •peanut butter and jelly.. I like my jelly spread thicker than the peanut butter. #1 classic PBJ
... You're amazing, brother !! Your kindness towards our VERY disfunctional country (U.S.), your culinary skills, your intrigue to learn MORE and MORE different tastes, cuisines. 🥰👍🫵🙏✝️🇺🇸 (I'm a retired sous chef, by the way.) ... I totally enjoy ALL your videos !!! ........ don't forget regular potato chips, and a tall glass of milk with your PBJ, next time !!!! 😂😋🌭🍔🍟🌮🌯🥙🥪🍖🍗🍕🥞🧇🥯🥓🥩
I will never judge anyone for eating peanut butter by the spoonful, sometimes it truly hits the spot. My mom always said that grouchiness is caused by lack of peanut butter in the diet. I enjoy a PB&J with sandhill plum (or red plum if you don't live in an area with sandhill plums) jelly. I also like raspberry jam, strawberry, or the traditional grape. You made some interesting sandwiches, and I enjoyed watching you experiment. If you want to try another peanut butter sandwich, try mixing a few spoonfuls with some maple syrup or honey, needs to be eaten with a full glass of milk, but it is very tasty.
I prefer the crunchy peanut butter. Normally Americans use Grape Jelly, but I find it harder to spread than jam. But, I prefer strawberry jam or seedless blackberry jam. Bananas are a good addition to a peanut butter sandwich. My grandkids love peanut butter and banana sandwiches. I like them too.
pro tip, turn the jar sideways and smash the knife through the jelly against the jar a bunch of times, it breaks it down and makes the jelly smooth and easily spreadable.
If you are feeling very brave, you could try peanut butter and dill pickle! 🥒 It's sweet and salty, like an Asian peanut dressing. Add onion for a little extra bite and crunch. Have fun weirding out all your friends! 😂
you need make the pb&j in the morning and let it sit in a plastic bag , until lunch at room temperature. This lets the oils in the peanut butter gel with the jelly, bread and the sandwich gets even better are creamier. These are one of the few sandwiches that get better as the day gets longer.
American here. Yes, we have great food yet it has been changed over the years. It use to be healthy but now it is mostly processed. SO IF YOU WANT TOO, make home made peanut butter , jelly and bread and then give us your opinion. Remember, things do change if you make everything homemade. That’s what made real American food what we are famous for from the beginning. That’s the real video most Americans want to see. ❤❤❤
5:00 US jelly has 3 ingredients fruit juice, sugar, and a gelling agent (usually pectin) Jam in the US is the same as everywhere else. And contains the whole fruit (berry) minus seeds and stems, sugar, and the gelling agent. US marmalade is the entire orange, minus the seeds. With sugar and the gelling agent.
I am soo happy you toasted one of the sandwiches. It drives me nuts when people make PB&J sandwiches and never toast their bread. As you just saw yourself, the sandwich tastes soooo much better toasted!!! I usually just use a toaster to toast my bread (unless I'm making a fried peanut butter and banana sandwich, then I use a pan...and you should really look into making!!), and I also like to go one step further and put the toast that has the peanut butter in the microwave for 20 seconds. The peanut butter gets all gooey and delicious after that!
Ok, I'm going to be brave and come out with my deep dark secret...I grew up eating PB&P sandwiches. That would be peanut butter and dill pickle sandwiches! My daughter loves them too and she has started all her friends on them! ❤
For me, #2 (crunchy peantut butter, with bananas), but with two small differences: 1- I would be using Skippy's 'Super Chunk' (which they claim is 'Extra Crunchy'), and 2- I would lightly toast the bread. And in answer to your other question, I most recently ate a PB&J (#1) two weeks ago (with jam made from Figs), but a PB&B (#2) just yesterday.
There’s another way to eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. You make the sandwich like normal and then you beat some eggs and dip the sandwich on both sides in the beaten egg and then fry in a pan like you would French toast. It makes the peanut butter melt. It’s delicious.
These all looked great! I will sometimes toast the bread in a pop-up toaster (unbuttered) before putting anything on it, depending on the specific ingredients I have on hand. Some breads work better one way vs the other, and some are not well suited to PBJs. Sourdough usually doesn't work for me for PBJs. I prefer crunchy PB, but with smaller peanut pieces than most brands here have. Your local brand looks like the perfect texture. There are differences between jelly, jam, and preserves, mostly down to the ratios of fruit vs juice vs sugar. They are different in texture and flavor, and there are even more specific types of fruit spreads. I mostly feel like jelly is for kids, since it generally doesn't have any actual pieces of fruit in it, while the spreads with some quantity of pulp or whole fruit are more "grown-up". My favorites are strawberry jam or preserves, and seedless raspberry "fruit spread" (one of the other specific types). I've never seen blueberry as a base fruit, though.
Nutella is absolutely a popular item here. Nutella & Peanut Butter sandwiches are a thing, and are incredible, even better on toasted bread, and even better grilled (what you're referring to as "toasted"). "Grilled" is an odd word, it's used for cooking directly on a metal grill over a fire, or with oil in a pan on the stove.
This classic sandwich is one that many of us in the U.S. were brought up with. For myself I used soft bread and not toasted bread and wash this down with a glass of milk it's wonderful. I will say though that sometimes for breakfast I'll have a piece of toast with peanut butter and a cup of coffee. I'm looking forward to your reaction because some people honestly don't understand why we eat the stuff! (1)
I like mine with white sandwich bread but I've used rustic Italian bread & I put the white bread in the toaster & LIGHTLY toast it & put it in the pan with a little Irish butter(kerrygold) & I like Dickson's or Smucker's SEEDLESS Blackberry Jam or some Goya Guava Jam & I like a THICK spread of PB & a thick spread of Jam. I grew up on Jif or Skippy but as an adult I tried Peter Pan & Reese's peanut butter because they have Honey Roasted & Dry Roasted varieties & I always prefer creamy/smooth over the crunchy. We have so many different brands of peanut butter, almond butter & different nut butters plus we have cookie butters like Biskoff & others & we have many different varieties of small to giant Nutella (i like the Nutella cookies) & different varieties of different spreads. We even have peanut butter powder to mix into recipes. Great video Andre & it made me go make a toasted PBJ sandwich & a glass of ice cold milk & yes it was really good. Elivs was famous for liking to eat peanut butter, Jelly/Jam & crispy Bacon sandwich but I've never tried one. 😂😍🤎💛💜👍🫶 🍞🥜🧈🫐🍌🍓🌰🍫🍪 🥪🥛
PB & J! And yes, numerous times, I’ve eaten peanut butter out of the jar. Feel no shame! 😂😂 The standard PB & J sandwich uses Concord grape jelly or jam. A very dark purple grape. But, I’m with you, love strawberry jam on my sandwiches, too. 🥪
The standard pbj uses grape jelly but as you've learned other flavors are good too. My brother had to have pbjs all the time when we were growing up, so my taste is actually plainer now. I like a rustic bread toasted in the oven with crunchy peanut butter on it as it toasts.
The difference between jelly and jam is that jelly is like gelatin and jam has texture because it generally have seeds and pulp of the fruit in it. The last time I had a peanut butter sandwich today.
Specifically, jam is made with the entire fruit, Jelly is made with fruit juice. That's how these days you get "blackberry jam" with no seeds. (It's WRONG, I tell you. WRONG. And I can't find it the old way any more. :( )
#1, three sandwiches: one with concord grape jelly, one with strawberry preserves, and one with peach preserves. Bonus round: two more sandwiches, on rye bread, both toasted. One with apricot preserves and one with orange marmalade.
I never eat crappy white bread like sunbeam except when I want a grilled cheese or a PBJ. For some reason that soft white factory made stuff just works the best.
American style bread/ sandwich bread is bread that is made in a Pullman loaf pan. It is a loaf pan that has a lid to it. The lid gives it the square shape.
Smooooooooth peanut butter every time!!!!! I would say that most (not all kids) kids prefer grape jelly. My favorite jam is blackberry. Something you didn’t try is putting a couple of large spoonfuls of peanut butter into a small bowl and then mix in either honey or maple syrup. (Maple syrup is my favorite). You can eat that mixture all by itself without any jam/jelly on your bread. Whatever you like! PBJ is so famous because it’s so easy and customizable to your own tastes. Enjoy!
#1, 52 yr old from Alabama. But I prefer whole wheat bread now. I also grew up eating (and still do) banana sandwiches with just mayo, and mater (tomato) sandwiches with a fresh from the garden ripe tomato with just mayo as well. Yum yum!! Peanut buttter and honey sandwiches are good too. When it comes to Nutella, I like to spread some on one side of a flour tortilla then fold and cook in a skillet in some olive oil both sides til crisp. Sooo good! Loving your videos, can’t wait for the next one
Super Crunch Skippy - with plum jam. Also, start with a thin layer of butter on both slices of bread. Then peanut butter on both slices of bread with slightly more peanut butter near the crust to help the jam from leaking out. Then put the jam in the center up to the ridge. Then merge the two slices of bread. Now...this is critical, cut the sandwich on the diagonal.
Skippy is just alright. The go to American peanut butter is Jif. For comparison, Jif accounts for roughly 39% of peanut butter sales in the USA and is #1 whereas Skippy at #2 only accounts for 17%. Jif isn't just a little bit better, it's vastly superior to all other peanut butters.
I loved your taste test and your wife’s opinions as well! But really an American PBJ traditionally uses GRAPE jelly with a peanut butter! A glass of ice cold milk goes perfectly with his sandwich! Can’t wait to see what you’re gonna try out next!
I ate crunchy as a kid and smooth these days. I eat Skippy Natural Creamy. I believe that the Portuguese peanut butters are probably much healthier. American products tend to add sweetness and saltiness just for the sake of flavor.
I cannot believe I enjoyed watching PB&J being made for 20 minutes! The amount of joy I get from watching this is shocking. Gotta love our Portuguese chef!
Helps that our lovely host is entertaining 😊
Agreed! He makes my day. :)

The classic Jelly for PB&J is Concord Grape Jelly.

Peanuts and Concord Grapes are both Native American foods.

I forgot about Peter Pan! I think PP is sweeter than Jif. Big fan of PP. I'm 55, too, and I don't eat bread, but I *do* still eat pb+j with a spoon. I'm in Ohio. What part of Florida? Love Florida.
I only eat jams and preserves too. No one should really be eating jelly.
strawberry jam and PB...yummmm my go to
I use Jif.
@@user-dc6ut5uu3t just curious whats bad about jelly?
It is personal preference-some like smooth, others crunchy. Grape jam is "traditional", but other flavors are also used- including apple butter and marmalade. There is a sandwich called 'the Elvis'. It is toasted peanut butter, banana, and bacon.
Peanut butter actually goes super well with honey. It's a bit messier though, so I like to eat it open-face: toasted bread, peanut butter, and then honey drizzled on top.
I mix the honey into the peanut butter. Yum.
IMHO, honey does not work on a PB sandwich, unless it is open face and toasted. Then it is sublime.
@@kcgunesq to each his own. Whatever makes you happy, go for it.
I bought PB2 powder and mixed the honey with it. Makes the honey less messy.
2 spoonfuls of peanut butter, 1 spoonful of honey. Stir them up together. Make your peanut butter and honey sandwich.
I am a professional PBJ maker. Nobody makes better pbj than me. I have the making down to an art. There's even a process to eat it without making a mess. I would post it but heads would explode. So I won't post the methods. You're welcome!
As an American, when someone says "toasted" it means putting the bread in the toaster (the 'machine' next to your coffee maker.)
Putting butter on it and putting it on a skillet or in a sandwich press, I'd call that "grilled" like a grilled cheese sandwich.
These are fun videos. Thank you for making them!
I call it fried, it is very desert like when you fry it.
This 👆🏻👆🏻👆🏻👆🏻
Thats just pan toasting/pan fried toasting though you can actually do it with a toaster oven (the superior toaster in this chef's opinion) by lightly but completely buttering the bread and toasting butter side up on high, just enaure full coverage because the uncovered portion will burn, the bottom doesnt need butter
I worked at Day's Inn. We toasted bread on the broiler.
We never browned it in a skillet, but I don't have a problem with doing it that way, as long as no grease is used.
@dalesplitstone6276 much faster for large batched although it does tend to be a little more dry (larger space to lose moisture to)
Wife has a sweet tooth, clearly... I agree the Nutella is more like a dessert.
You have to remember, the basic PB&J is something kids can make without mom and dad... adding in toasting removes that for young kids.
"A man has to do what a man has to do." Love it!
Granny made the best homemade bread
200% the best homemade pb & j.
Blistered our hands peeling them, they were so hard, and the amount of sugar that was added because they were so sour was alarming in retrospect, but the end result was sooooo good
I grew up with peanut butter, honey and banana! I still enjoy PB &J’s but the other is very nostalgic 😊
Love them ❤
Perfect! (Sometimes add a sprinkle of cinnamon)
I prefer peanut butter, honey, and banana on toasted bread.
That's my favorite way to eat peanut butter sandwiches with honey and banana slices
I love my PBJ with grape jelly or honey.
"Please don't judge me." - Eating Peanut Butter with a spoon.
I eat Peanut Butter with a spoon basically any time I'm feeling under the weather. Its got fats, sodium, protein, some vitamins... everything I need to feel a bit better.
Same here! 😂
Bimbo bread is a Mexican brand. I did not know they had a presence in Portugal. Awesome!. We have Bimbo here in the USA.
Grupo Bimbo is the world's largest baking company, and operates in 35 countries within the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa.
They are mexican but from what I understand they have factories in each country they are in.
There are Bimbos all over the world. 😉
They own Mrs Baird's so they're well into the American market as well
And Thomas’ English Muffins
I’m 65 and I eat either PBJ or PBB for lunch most work days of the year. I don’t ever get tired of them. I would recommend the PBB being peanut butter on one slice of bread and mayonnaise on the other-the combination of the salty-ish mayo with the salty sweetness of the peanut butter combined with the bright fresh sweetness of the banana is amazing. I also eat banana sandwiches (bread, mayo, and banana). Elvis was very fond of PBB sandwiches.
Jennifer from Michigan here,
Peanut butter and strawberry preserves is heavenly. Love your videos! You have a delightful accent and an even more delightful personality! ❤
My favorite combination! ( In Oregon).
@@Wheely55 Hopefully he wont do any of the crazy shit. Would be wonderful to have US food standards be higher though.
So that you know the difference between Jelly and jam: Jelly has no pieces of actual fruit in it, and is made from strained fruit JUICE. Jam uses actual fruit chunks and is stewed with sugar, then jarred.
PB&J growing up was made with grape jelly. Now, grown up, I prefer blackberry jam. It’s just your personal choice.
Me to, Wonder bread Jif and Smucker's seedless blackberry jam. YUM, and a large glass of milk.
@@pansysutton4689plus a chunk of cheese, and some ruffled potato chips
Grape jelly is most traditional for sure, but these days it seems strawberry jam is most popular. Concord grape jelly is probably unobtanium in Europe.
I live in a part of the country where people still make jams and jellies from scratch often from nature's bounty so I'm all for a unique jelly
Eating a spoon full of PB is a pre-test ritual in america. Its a solid chunk of slow calories that will keep you focused through the hours and hours of testing in the American education aystem
Edit: for the record this was supposed to post as a general free-standing comment but YT mobile is crap
I’m not a traditionalist. I prefer chunky and strawberry preserves on untoasted white bread.
I totally agree on the crunchy and untoasted bread.
Your version is THE perfect one!
Ah, a person of taste and class
My favorite is chunky on untoasted white bread with my mothers home made Choke Cherry Jelly. However since we no longer live in Colorado and we don't have Choke Cherries down here in Texas. Strawberry Preserves takes over first place. (Sigh It has been 30 years since I have had a PB&J with Choke Cherry Jelly. )
Sometimes on tortillas yummm
Im also from New England and have suggested FLUFFERNUTTER sandwiches a few times hopefully he tries it.
They looked at me like I had horns. lol
Yesssss, PB & blackberry is the best! Plum jam my close second.
Lol.
Jif is not superior to Skippy. I'll die on this hill lol
I used to write special education lesson plans like that for my mentally-challenged students 😂.
This also would be a good warm up to get into computer programming.
❤
I remember a teacher giving us an assignment like that in school except she just said we had to use "A recipe". Me being my weird self who doesn't really like chocolate or peanut butter, my mind COMPLETELY skipped over PB&J and went 'Oh, lets do microwave cheese dip!' My teacher probably had a bunch of varying PB&J instructions and then that. 😂
Jelly is made from fruit juice, Jam has crushed fruit, Marmalade has citrus fruit plus rind and Preserves has big or whole pieces of fruit in it.
In New England we sometimes enjoy and sandwich made with peanut butter with a marshmallow creme called Fluff.
And some of us sugar addicts would eat fluff with jelly.
@@nunya3163 I actually would go all out, and make a triple decker - Peanut Butter, Jelly and Fluff on three pieces of bread!!!!
We call those Fluffernutters :)
He has tried fluff!
Yummy, a Fluffernutter sandwich. I haven't had one in years.
Smooth/creamy for me. 100% I eat right of the jar. Classic American is grape jelly. Grew up on that. As an adult it's blueberry preserves and occasionally orange marmalade.
2 crunchy for sure. If smooth, I add potato chips in the middle of the pbj to add crunch.
Potato chips are a great addition!
I looooove crunchy too. Never tried adding potato chips, saving that for retiremeny or something, maybe try it for the first time with my kid
Peanut butter
Banana
Bacon
Bread, such as French white bread or sourdough bread
Grape jelly
How was it prepared?
The ingredients were stuffed into a hollowed-out loaf of bread
The sandwich was deep-fried
I make that sometimes, I’ve always called it the fat Elvis. Toasted with butter, it’s so bomb.
There’s a whiskey brand called Elvis and they have a pbj, banana, and bacon…
One of the breads shown was from Bimbo, a Mexican company that probably owns 3/4 of the commercial bread market.
Ahh PBJ, so good, so simple... Love from America Andre! Also, i put peanut butter on both sides.. it keeps the jelly from making the bread soggy.
Ty 🙏
So many memories of PBJ. My mom used to cut them into shapes using cookie cutters and they were so good.
Or u can use butter
I agree and some what keeps the jelly from sliding off
My opinion about American peanut butter is that Jif is the best..I might get backlash for that but it’s just my opinion
Love it on celery too - great snack !
Ants on a log is so good!
Craisins also work in a pinch!!
I love PB&J sandwiches. Jif peanut butter with Welchs grape jelly. I like both smooth and crunchy. I buy smooth most of the time.
Jif is the best
Perfect
@sherrit1964 I think so, too. I've tried Skippy and Peter Pan once and thought Jif was better.
Yup, me too. I always buy Jif and Welch's grape jelly. I prefer crunchy though, but both are great.
Choosy moms choose Jif
A glass of milk is a must. I generally use Jiff peanut butter with either, grape, strawberry or cherry jam or jelly. They are always great on toasted on bread.
Smooth with grape jelly, not toasted. Wipe the peanut butter off the knife on the untouched jelly bread slice before you top it with the jelly.
I thought the strawberry, nutella, and peanut butter sounded like a dessert dish. Should add a dollop of whipped cream on top!
•I am allergic to chocolate, so I can't eat Nutella
•peanut butter and jelly.. I like my jelly spread thicker than the peanut butter.
#1 classic PBJ
I eat straight peanut butter, nothing wrong with that. Also have it on top of celery with raisins on top.
Bugs On A Log.

😂😂😂🍺 don't forget the Portuguese glass of milk.😂🥛👍
Traditional PB&J is made with grape jelly. You must try with grape
It's sweet and salty, like an Asian peanut dressing. Add onion for a little extra bite and crunch.
Have fun weirding out all your friends! 😂
Jam is all the fruit, jelly is the juice only
Never been a jam person, i don't like seeds. Here in the south my favorite is Muscadine jelly, its a wild grape variety
you need make the pb&j in the morning and let it sit in a plastic bag , until lunch at room temperature.
5:00 US jelly has 3 ingredients fruit juice, sugar, and a gelling agent (usually pectin)
Jam in the US is the same as everywhere else.
Nutella is popular in US, too.
😮😮😮😮
Even better if you dip it in pancake batter & pan-fry! ❤
@sophiacromwell8017 🤯🤯
Mind blown. I know what my next munchie snack will be. Thanks for the genius suggestion!

Had a pb with grape jelly last night. you need a glass of good cold milk to go with it.
FYI - Elvis ate toated peanut butter and banana sandwiches.
@@deromilly Like how all the watermelons in supermarkets today are seedless (and tasteless).

It's the same with like, Kraft singles. Nothing better for a perfect grilled cheese
@CircusFoxxo exactly. A grilled cheese is the ONLY time I eat those hahaha
you should also have Grape Jelly as an option with the peanut butter
Can't go wrong with the peanut butter jelly sandwich. Jam is better and if you ever want to I like to add cream cheese to mine 🤤
American style bread/ sandwich bread is bread that is made in a Pullman loaf pan. It is a loaf pan that has a lid to it. The lid gives it the square shape.
Now its time for an Elvis sandwich. Its toasted bread, peanut butter, sliced or mashed banana, and occasionally bacon.
Oh yeah! Do it, Andre!
The actual one he used to order was like 8000 calories 😂
Smooooooooth peanut butter every time!!!!! I would say that most (not all kids) kids prefer grape jelly. My favorite jam is blackberry. Something you didn’t try is putting a couple of large spoonfuls of peanut butter into a small bowl and then mix in either honey or maple syrup. (Maple syrup is my favorite). You can eat that mixture all by itself without any jam/jelly on your bread. Whatever you like! PBJ is so famous because it’s so easy and customizable to your own tastes. Enjoy!
Canadian kids also grow up eating PB&J sandwiches!
Skippy is the best for Portuguese sandwich!
😂 I LOVE how you label your foods and appliances. Portuguese knife, American bread, Portuguese butter from a Spanish cow. 🤣🤣
I was just thinking about what I want for supper tonight, and a PBJ was the very first thing I thought of. 😃
I've legit done that a few times lol
Lesson #1: ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS drink a glass of cold milk whenever you eat a PBJ. It helps with lubrication and swallowing. ❤
