Annie always seemed much more in her element with Troy & Abed then with Jeff or Britta. It's a much more believable friendship because they're all closer to the same age & no matter how smart she is, Annie is pretty immature too lol
Pretty sure it started out where Dan Harmon had really ridged ideas in his head about who the characters were going to be for the show. Old Russian grandma, young latino guy... Harmon wanted to cast for those very specific roles amd was running into some issues doing so. One of the people helping him put together the show recommend instead that they just cast the absolute best people available with the best chemistry and then create the characters afterwards. I think they knocked it out of the park with that approach
@@NeoStoicism except in 3x16 they go into the dreamatorium and Abed plays Jeff and makes a couple passes at her and while she smiles coyly at him and lets him touch her face for a moment she pushes him away and is immune to his persona because she wants Abed to be Abed again and she admits she doesn't actually love Jeff, just the idea of fixing him.
Abed and Annie becoming closer was the best part of Seasons 5 & 6 and no one can tell me otherwise. (my favorite moments are the team up in paintball season 6 and their adorable hug Britta's parents' house)
As much as I don't ship them (I feel like their friendship is really great but I just don't see them together that way) the kiss in the star wars paint ball episode was the best kiss in the entire series and you can't change my mind.

I think the writers didn't want to seriously pair off Abed early on because he's the "different" one and the "outsider" and he's not really the type to make the first move on a girl... his potential romantic relationships were played as one-off gags--a secret service agent, an 8-bit character in a video game, a series of tropes played out with the girl in the coat closet... but if you squint, the foundations are there for Abed and Annie and if the writers had just scattered a few more non-conventional seeds are there. But it's hard to take a six-season friendship and turn it romantic in the last season without more groundwork. Before the writers put Troy and Britta together, they had a few hints that there was a spark there, and Abed and Annie is even more subtle and you have to think about a few things the way Abed might.... non-conventionally. But I think it wouldn't have been too hard to scatter a few more hints early on that Abed at least found Annie attractive and worthwhile, that he essentially friendzoned himself because Jeff is the leading man who gets the girl, that once they became friends he didn't want to do anything to change or harm the group dynamic, that he was wrong about them being Chandler and Phoebe and maybe they could be the Dark Horse Fan-Favourite like Chandler/Monica, etc. Meanwhile we see Annie going back and forth with the idea of fixing Jeff... But what if she actually did come to grips with Jeff being a bad choice for her, and what if her encounters with Don Draper and Han Solo characters had made her see Abed in a more attractive light, what if she started to really see Abed as a viable romantic partner but was unsure how to approach the idea safely, and what if they both realized that their friendship brings a certain joy to their lives that they don't want to lose or change... Because eventually it would change if Annie got married to someone else and had a family to take care of, etc. What if they realized they both want to stick together? It's soooooo much healthier and cuter then Jeff/Annie or whatever Abed had going on with the 8-bit girl in the videogame episode.

The accepted canon is that Abed is a bit older than them, a few years. I don't know if it has been stated sometime in the show, but most asume that since in Mixology Certification the group never said anything on Abed needing a fake ID to enter the bar, or even asked how old he was.

at some point in season 1 they say that britta is in the middle of the groups age range and abed is on the younger side so when the show started abed was between the ages 20-27 but I think he was like 24/25 personally
I like to imagine their new jobs in the last episode were just some agreed on bullshit to spare the feelings of the group; they actually just eloped without anyone knowing.
