Region-locking needs to die out. Why punish people who import their games? Why should I or anyone else have to be punished for buying a perfectly legit game in one territory and trying to play it in another? What if I travel a lot? That's not protection, it's treating the customer like a criminal!
***** It doesn't need to take time. Region-locking needs to end RIGHT NOW. It took less time to go from having no space program in America to landing Neil Armstrong on the moon. Nintendo needs to stop being retarded and join the 21st century. It's 2016; old ways get forced out of society.
So great when you can just pop a game in from elsewhere and it will work. I even bought a Japanese PS3 baseball game, just cause I could (and cause the batting was like MLB Power Pros, which is fun as hell).
Region locks are stupid but in some countries it does make sense. Japan's import can be horrible at pricing, because of this they want to region lock stuff so people don't start importing it themselves (money going OUT of the country, not staying within). A good example of how Japan aproaches this without region locks is how they handle their CD releases. Bands get a choice - make bonus tracks for the Japanese release (this is why there are so many japanese releases of CD's) or well. We don't release it here. What bands then do is string some bonus tracks on it so it's in the eyes of the Japanese consumers "worth" the higher price.
+Nott Joey or metal jesus doing a video on it.. too bad the guys who have it are money grubbing assholes who are holding it ransom trying to make as much money as they can with it

It's sad that developers of games don't talk more about their work. I'm sure guys like Mark from this video have amazing stories about creating consoles, games and other related things.

@Real B's Family-I've actually got a Nintendo 64 that's been modified to play Japanese N64 games as well as the English ones. If you're interested, I can see about selling it to you for a decent price, let me know what you think.
Try contacting fangamer, they've been dealing with a lot of n64DD stuff over the years, they might know something or know someone who can get what is needed to load your blue disk.
This is nostalgic at its best!! I remember reading about this in like 1997, either online or more than likely in a gaming magazine! I had forgotten that it even existed until seeing your video, and then I remembered it. Awesome video!! Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
When I was in primary school, my friend had told me that there was a new add-on for the N64 coming out soon that would use floppy disks, and that he had seen it because his dad had it for a few days before he returned it to someone. I never believed him.
I can tell you from personal researching that that 64dd was holding a developer disk, it is a different color from the original n64 dd disk gray. It can only work with a Developer N64 DD that have a blue disk drive. I would be honored to help you search for a developer console so you can play and see what's in the contents of that disk.
Originally, the N64DD had multiple types of prototypes, there was a computer that could run a type of disk's similar in format to a normal n64dd that were larger than normal n64dd disk's, then had the blue prototype consoles which could run those blue developer disk's, then the released japan version, and scrapped the USA version of the N64DD, which contained the rare USA bios of the N64DD.
There is nothing wrong with the disk itself, it can't run on a normal n64DD due to the BIO's within the motherboard. We would need a Developer console that *obviously* contain the Developer BIO's.
IF, IF what is on the disk is an early retail version of the online services software they had been working on for Japan then there may be specific hardware requirements that must also be present before the disk would boot. iirc, there was (is) an external modem being developed that plugged into the bottom of the n64 itself and would have likely been required for a dial-up connection to the online services Nintendo had planned. The modem was never released in NA afaik as well. Please keep in mind this is purely speculation on my part. Metal Jesus definitely needs to find one of the developer cartridges though to complete his testing for us all to see.
The N64 is region free, but there is a physical part in the N64 which stops other region cartridges from fitting inside the slot. There is a way to cut off that part and stick the other region cart inside. So if it was cut off, it POSSIBLY could work.
Hey MetalJesusRocks. I want you to contact one of the guys over at 64DD.org, his name is LuigiBlood. Go to Dumps and scroll to the bottom and contact him, he should help you dump the rom and we should get to see what game it is.
I highly doubt it'd be Earthbound 64. That game wasn't finished, and Nintendo certainly wouldn't have translated it to English during development 'cause remember, Earthbound SNES bombed horribly. No one bought it, so Nintendo saw the US as a dead market for anything Earthbound.
I kind of doubt it. The game remained unfinished, and wasn't translated into English at the time it was shown off. And probably only 1 Development cartridge existed, considering it wasn't even playable when it was shown off. If anything, Iwata probably had it in his archive and probably still does to this day die despite his death. It's either in the hands of Nintendo, Hal, or it was destroyed long ago. An early version of Paper Mario, Kirby 64 or Banjo Tooie would be much more plausible considering those games had come out at around this time
When I was younger I would always wonder what the n64 had the slot on the bottom. I thought it was something akin to a cartridge duplication function. Not proud to admit I tried jamming the cartridges that way
David Di Franco I remember seeing this in a Nintendo magizine a long time ago. Or it may have been game informer. Either way I knew about this thing but they never delivered on it.

It was never an urban legend. Everyone knew that there was an Atari dump out in the middle of the desert. It was even reported on in the local newspapers of that area when Atari did that back in '83! What WAS an urban legend was that the dump had nothing but E.T. cartridges, which turned out to be false and there were actually far less E.T. cartridges in there than suspected.

I worked at Nintendo at one time. But I was only an underling that installed firmware on wii consoles and reported any debug errors to the engineers and handed the defected consoles to them. Sure I played Wii Sports a couple months before the Wii was even released in USA, but I was only an underling and I can tell ya that policies are a pretty big thing inside to keep secrets from leaking out. Hopefully a policy doesn't hold back people from telling the story about this great DD device.
seriously though what a find. Even as a show piece it's excellent!! But i hope you can get it to work, even if somebody has working titles that they could send you that would rock. Now all you need is the Nintendo/Playstation console. Thanks for your reply MJ. Rock on !! :)
I have to admit, I probably don't have the patience to develop this or even go through all the legwork required to really learn about somehting that essentially didn't exist. But seriously, MAD MAD Respect from knowing about this, and not just knowing but actually using it, especially when emulators and flash drives are so prevalant nowadays. I can really see the passion and dedication you had for this, and everything that led you to these discoveries...Seriously well done.
My dad worked at Iguana Entertainment back in the days. So, he was a N64 dev. I asked him about the 64DD and he said, that Iguana Entertainment wanted to make a Turok 3 expansion for the 64DD.
My lad, you are the archaeologist of video games! You answered so many questions I had about the Nintendo 64 DD! Would recommend this video, and the followup video, to anyone who might be interested in the topic. I'm just flabbergasted you found a functional one, let alone an English one with a factory blue port! Wow...
Yeah, it's a shame Nintendo felt intimidated by Sony's PS2 machine, a machine that in the end crapped and lost to the newcomer Microsoft's Xbox. Had they gone full balls-deep in the N64 and the DiskDrive instead of the Gamecube, they would've triumphed over the two rival companies. Just imagine, instead of the GC, to buy the 64DD in 2002, playing Animal Crossing, Luigi's Mansion, TLOZ:Wind Waker, StarFox 64 2, Conker's Other Bad Day...a dream we will never see made into a reality.
I remember always getting what my friends didn't have. It was like a potluck, but with video games. So I had the Playstation, so someone got the N64. One of them got the Dreamcast, so then I got the PS2 (which was 900 bucks on eBay and that was 'a good deal'). From there, consoles got cheaper and the sharing ended. Tbh, I miss the gaming parties. It's not at all the same online. No in-person spectators, no gigantic bowl of popcorn. No crushing them in Twisted Metal and then gloating 3 inches from them. No OP as fuck dual P90s in Golden Eye and people voting to ban camping the vents. No more unlocking Tekken characters that are clearly OP and getting people to beg you for the button combo. And then banning that, too, because it's flat out ridiculous.
GamerbyDesign On the same earth both the PS3 and XBOX360 got outsold by the Wii. I meant lost in the long end, as with all succesors. Lost ground as generations went on. I should've phrased what I meant better, my bad.
You're the kind of dude I could just sit around drinking a beer with while talking all the things video games. None of my friends are into games like I am, but whatever. Greetings from Philly, you've got a new subscriber homie. Keep on keeping on.
@MetalJesusRock i'd try to check with The Ben Heck Show. You probably know them already but they took apart the playstation/nintendo prototype and made it work. So if someone can get this thing to work or perhaps remove the region lock ? read the blue disk ? , it's most likely them. I am curious to know what the hell is on that blue disc.
Hey metal jesus, how did you get the N64 to have 720P video out on your TV? do you have your N64 modded with an HDMI output or do you have some kind of converter device like the Framemesiter?
dude i had a nintendo power subscription for almost 20 years, i was always pissed this thing never came out in america, and i was always so interested in it. this is really cool to see. thanks for sharing this.
Sam Hill SNES had the same slot. SNES for the CD add on they were working on with Sony until Nintendo backed out on and now we have the PlayStation brand.

Isn't Zelda Gaiden Is Majora's Mask
Hiyoi Yup
This is easily one of the greatest finds in video game history, and one of the lost wonders of the gaming atmosphere (now found).
Man I'd love to get my hands on this - what a find!
Do you have a video on the orange xbox?
E
Sports, it’s in the game
Edit: guy who replied "A", whyd you delete it?

UPDATE to the mysterious blue disk: th-cam.com/video/Pe-fs1COgr0/w-d-xo.html
MetalJesusRocks reminds me of gs ball XD
I DONT UNDERSTAND WHAT THIS DISK DRIVE IS USED FOR!!??
three eyed propet, its for bigger games
Ely Rogers okey nice thank u
can you get the Atari original Xbox
Love it to the fact had the 64DD went on sale in the U.S. it would be difficult for it to compete with the PlayStation 2
"It *flopped* terribly in Japan" Hahaaaaah, I see what you did there. Oh, wait, that wasn't a floppy disk pun, was it?
So the label on the front that said "USA" didn't tip you off it might be a US version??
Shhhh.... Don't use that new fangled logic here
This is like when the Atari Dump was located. An urban legend turns out to be true.
I still don't understand how some people thought it was a legend when it was something that was actually documented
+markasscop Arev not every newspaper in the country ran the same story, so people would hear about it by word of mouth but no way to prove it. The Internet is such a blessing, lol.
+Henry Dillard You should see The Gaming Historian's episode on this, he himself said there was no myth at all, all they did was just push the truth ever further
+markasscop Arev it's because of all the AVGN fanboys
Cool you are in Seattle where I am at! Definitely subscribing to you! Might see ya around here in Seattle some day!
You definitely will if you hit up any of the retro stores like Pink Gorilla Games or Another Castle. I'm there every couple of weeks!
+Tyee Cambrón I would love working for nintendo
+MetalJesusRocks I wish this thing would of not flop
then it wouldn't be rare
I know a guy who could help. His name is Mario
It'sa ME, Mario! :)
seriously though what a find. Even as a show piece it's excellent!! But i hope you can get it to work, even if somebody has working titles that they could send you that would rock. Now all you need is the Nintendo/Playstation console. Thanks for your reply MJ. Rock on !! :)
+MetalJesusRocks or any price for the ps3 you want
it's "It's me Maria" hello
why did people upvote this
I have to admit, I probably don't have the patience to develop this or even go through all the legwork required to really learn about somehting that essentially didn't exist.
That's amazing, I'd love to be involved in such project, brilliant!
back to this gem in 2020! suprised I never seen this episode. on to part 2. great video
Yeah subtitles! Greetings and blessings from Mexico! Great video!
Treasures like this ought to be kept with the utmost care.
That is super awesome! I always wanted to try the F-Zero Track Editor. I know that's cheesy but I just love building levels so much. :P
My lad, you are the archaeologist of video games! You answered so many questions I had about the Nintendo 64 DD! Would recommend this video, and the followup video, to anyone who might be interested in the topic. I'm just flabbergasted you found a functional one, let alone an English one with a factory blue port! Wow...
The 64dd was scrapped for a system called the dolphin which was scrapped for the GameCube the fact that you got that bro is amazing
david liz pretty sure dolphin was the gamecube
Came because this was trending on Facebook
Same here
I hope to God one day someone finds a Mother 3 N64 demo somewhere.
Make it your mission to find out what that blue disk contains!!! A follow video is a must! Excited!
the whole time my jaw was open.....unbelievable find.
Damn Nintendo. I bought the 64 with the promise of the DD to come out and give PlayStation a run for its money, only for it to never come out.
On what earth did the original XBOX beat the PS2?
+GamerbyDesign he said nothing about the original Xbox or the PS2 in his comment lol
Sooo, basically you're saying you have a PROTOTYPE? AWESOME BLOSSOM!!!
Wow. That's really awesome.
Your channel is my new addiction. I love all the videos. I can’t stop watching them. Thanks for all the awesome stuff.
Looks almost exactly like the Doctor64 that I owned except where the HDD goes there was a CDRom drive for you to load your ROMs from.
"They only made 10 titles for it"
Yea but 4 of them are just different Mario Artist games...
Hey metal jesus, how did you get the N64 to have 720P video out on your TV? do you have your N64 modded with an HDMI output or do you have some kind of converter device like the Framemesiter?
I use a simple Composite to HDMI converter by ENKO - $30 on Amazon and works great.
Great question. Thank you
Component? or did you mean Composite?
I'm sorry... composite... I think yellow video out and always say the wrong name! #HateThat ;)
+MetalJesusRocks You use composite? Why not S-video? It gives off a sharper signal.
dude i had a nintendo power subscription for almost 20 years, i was always pissed this thing never came out in america, and i was always so interested in it. this is really cool to see. thanks for sharing this.
You mean, 64DD isn't Nintendo's bra size?
It's metal Jesus' bra size
THATS A HUUUUGE BITCH

FOUND: Ultra-Rare Nintendo Prototype
Game: Prototype 2009
when I was a kid I always wondered what you put in the slot under the 64
Sam Hill SNES had the same slot. SNES for the CD add on they were working on with Sony until Nintendo backed out on and now we have the PlayStation brand.
Dude I love that Opeth 'ghost reveries"poster. One of my favorite albums.

I remember reading about this in the old nintendo64 magazine here in Australia! The F-Zero X expansion looked super interesting. I wanted it so bad haha. This is an awesome look at one, congrats on the find!
What a crazy story!, I hope Witcher 3 is in there. It's the only game you need in your life.
skyrim is better ;)

Even Oblivion is a better game than Skyrim. The Witcher 3 is in a league of its own.
i believe the dd64 was refrerred to as Dolphin. i remember reading about it in a nintendo power magazine.
HiPHOP x87 dolphin is a GameCube emulator
Dolphin was the code name for Game Cube.
Zack rambo you are dump
It's both.
Hard 4 games has a dev n64 dd maybe you could try the disk in that.
That’s a real nice catch you got there, mate!
Apparently, something about "Spirit Cooking" was found on that disk...
Actually there was a program on it called "goatse"...but I haven't bothered to google it yet..
Lmao sounds like something one would do before prepping for some "spirit cooking"..
