As disappointing as the ending was I actually don't mind it. I think the biggest mistake of S8 was making it 6 episodes long. 10 episodes could have shown far more character development and shown more of Dany slowly going mad, 6 episodes made it feel rushed and is definitely why most people are upset by it. By far the worst part of S8 was making Bran king.

    • @meadmaker4525
      @meadmaker4525 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

Yeah, it was definitely rushed, and given how much money they'd already put into the series as a whole, rushing it was unnecessary. Dani's character arc was always going to end up this way. If you pay attention from start to end, you can see her evolving in that direction, little by little, and Targaryen inbreeding made madness more of an eventuality than a possible family trait. Anybody hoping for a Disney ending in the GOT world was deluding themselves. The entire story is one brutal tragedy after another, with brief interludes of heroism from the "good guys."
I think the ending could have definitely been better written, but I'm not at all surprised about where it ended up. To be honest, before I finished the final episode, I thought sure the final scene would show Dani sitting on the iron throne with her dragon behind her, John beside her, and the Unsullied and Dothraki at her feet, in some Conan-like pull-back shot showing the Mad Queen presiding over the burning, twisted rubble of what used to be the red keep. Ready to rule the world by blood and fire. But, again, John's decision to end her wasn't a huge surprise.
Bran as king? I don't think I'd have gone there. King's/Queen's advisor maybe, given his "sight," but not king himself. Just didn't make sense, and made the rest of it all seem kind of lame.
I think most people are disappointed because they wanted to see Dani or John on the throne, or both, with Cersei hanging from the dragon's jaws, Jamie in a cell somewhere, Tyrion happily drinking and whoring in a brothel, and all the world rejoicing at the wondrous turn of events. But, again, that would not have been GOT.

All you need to do is look in Dany's eyes when the bells started tolling, she was reliving in her mind about everything that has happened to her, over the whole arc of the GOT story and culminating in the the execution of her best friend in front of her eyes at the hands of Cersei, her eyes then begin to flash with rage and if it could be put into words, her look simply says "I don't care anymore, everyone is going to pay the ultimate price today" then she quickly guides drogon high into the air and begins to rain down all of her pent up grief, fury, pain and vengeance onto everyone in King's Landing, innocence be damned. She's been pushed too far, she's completely lost it, she's snapped and the only thought in her head now is that she wants to watch the world (aka King's Landing) Burn.

To tell the truth I will never understand how people at the end hated Daenerys because of what she did, the writers of the series basically screwed up her character, they did things that are not even in the Books, and as George R.R Martin himself said they killed her character that in the Books is still alive, That said, I wonder what people expected her to do? After they killed the second Dragon, they decapitated the only or if not one of the people who mattered most to her in her life, she acted in the same way that a human being in real life would have done, kill everyone who She got in front, she was blinded by hatred, anger and revenge, they simply made her look like the Villain in history when the real villain was and always was Cersei, and if anyone has read the Books from another Perspective they know that That Throne from its core Was Cursed from the Beginning, a lot of blood was shed for that shitty throne, Many betrayals between relatives, that throne I repeat was cursed from the beginning

If ONLY they took a bit more time to make her slowly descend into madness and darkness, she would've been the best villain ever written.

There are so many things that happened in the show that did not happen in the books. Daenerys locked her own dragons up because one child was murdered, yet this same person is the one who would burn a whole city to the ground, including children? She is reflective of her actions throughout the books, compared to someone like Cersei who doesn't care about anyone. She could have attacked Kingslanding ages ago but she stays for the people, if she was power-hungry why would she do that when she could just take her army and three dragons and just attack? In the books when Daenerys goes to Qarth, she's welcomed in, whereas in the show she gives a whole speech about "burning cities to the ground", which doesn't even happen in the books. She doesn't burn or feed men to her dragons - doesn't happen in the books. She is a mother to her people, and she goes out to protect them, she states "Why do the gods make kings and queens, if not to protect the ones who can't protect themselves?" She fights against slavery and kills Slavers (which is a great thing, nobody misses them) and fought for their freedom (though that freedom can be questioned). She has her brother Viserys killed, but he was an abuser even if you read through those chapters she's so sympathetic towards him, she tries her best to accommodate her abuser and he tries to kill her baby and that was the final straw; but throughout the books, she still is haunted by his death. The only thing that was a grey area was when she crucified the masters because they crucified children, but she thinks it was justice for what they did because among those crucified were those who were innocent and against slavery; but afterwards she regrets it when she smells their bowels and blood. Daenerys states, "I want to make my kingdom beautiful, to fill it with fat men and pretty maids and laughing children. I want my people to smile when they see me ride by, the way Viserys said they smiled for my father." I don't think Daenerys in the books is going to systematically massacre and commit genocide after they surrender to her. There will definitely be collateral damage but not in the way the show depicted it. George R R Martin is setting up Cersei to be the mad queen, it's so blatant in the books, don't think he needs Daenerys to be another mad queen - I could be wrong but it just doesn't follow her narrative arc in my opinion.

@@princeamir9235 I dont think Daenerys is meant to be the Mad Queen. I think she's meant to be the fallen hero from the books. Yes, she has good intentions, even in the show I believe she died thinking what she did was the right thing. I don't think Daenerys is evil or Martin wrote her that way, but I think he also purposely wrote Daenerys chapters only from her POV so we can't really judge her actions from outside. I think when she will arrive to Westeros her view of right and wrong will differ a lot with other main characters.I think what happened in the show was a breaking point, she was not in her best state of mind, I don't think she did it of intentional malice but more of a violent breakdown. The thing she's just too powerful and her actions can be too destructive. Still, this is just speculation since the books aren't out and they probably won't be out in a long time.

Locking her dragons away for accidentally killing a child. She remained in Essos for the sole purpose of freeing people from slavery. Conquering city after city- without unleashing fire and death onto its inhabitants. She set aside her own desire for the iron throne- to help the people of Yunkai, and Mereen, and the rest of freehold so that they wouldn’t slip back into chains. She was reminded over and over the atrocities her father committed, and every time she condemned his actions- assuring her advisors that she was not her father. Aside from Jon, Daenerys was one of the only characters that actually considered how her actions might affect the lives of innocent people. So much so, that they called her their Mother. She set aside her desire for the throne to save Westeros and the North from the Night King- sacrificing most of her armies and a dragon in the process. What other characters sacrificed more than Daenerys? Yes, she had the potential for darkness- as did every other main character! Arya’s entire mission in life was to become a skilled assassin and avenge her enemies through murder. Sansa almost killed her own sister because she was a threat to her position. Jon murdered a fellow brother of the nights watch so he could infiltrate the wildlings. Tyrion used wildfire to burn thousands of men, he also threatened to poison everyone in kings landing, and strangled the woman he loved because she betrayed him. Bran was arguably the worst of them all because he knew what would happen and did nothing to prevent it- so that in the end-he could sit the iron throne. Brienne, the Hound, Jamie, Bronn, all of them have murdered people, for one reason or another. Do we consider those moments of darkness for them as proof they were destined for evil? No, because that’s not character development.

Everyone kills. Some out of necessity, some out of duty, personal revenge, etc.
I think Daenerys posessed a unique combination of vengeful bitterness and entitlement. While she was kind to the innocent, she treated her enemies with excessive cruelty to her deep satisfaction, and always on the scale of conquest.
"I'm not my father" was a sort of mantra, always spoken with threatening command, but half her actions showed that half of her WAS her father. She had to consciously veer herself towards kindness and reason many times. "I won't be queen of the ashes" were Tyrion's words, which she repeated as a new mantra, to keep, as he once said, her worst impulses in check.
Whenever Daenerys set aside her own mission to assist others, she would experience loss and pain in return. Maybe when she finally got what she was after and heard those bells, the realization hit her that none of it was worth it. At the beginning I couldn't understand why she'd do such a thing but actually , when we think about it , she was alone. I mean she lost 2 of her dragons , Jorah , Missandei and a lot of allies... she also knew that people in Westeros didn't love her the way people in Essos did. Daenerys probably knew she wouldn't have been able to rule correctly , people were just afraid and didn't like her at all so it would have been chaos ngl. We can agree and say that she went completely mad at the end. I didn't want to say it at first because I couldn't understand what just happened... I think that they should have developed Dany's mental health getting worse on a longer period of time. They were almost always her enemies or she had logical rationale to do so. Besides, Stannis did the same and we often talk about how much of a fair man he is.
"The only thing that held her back was her advisors"
Apart from that time in S5 when Daario advised her to kill all the masters to stop the Sons of the Harpy and she instead decided to adopt a diplomatic approach of marrying Hizdahr.
      "She was increasingly detached...,"
Mostly based on Propaganda spread by Cersei and valid distrust from Northerners for what happened to Ned's brother and father when they went south to meet the her father. But i mean, she was conquering their lands. She should have known they'd fear her. Besides, winning the throne via conquest would still be valid anyway.
Personally, i think everything you mentioned can be explained. What i can't find an explanation for is why she would purposefully burn innocent people when Cersei, her true enemy and the only one with power able to rival her's, is within reach.

@@LFC_Fan23 I blame HBO for not having more time to show the decent into madness, but in short the line Danny says to John about ruling through Love or Fear is what explains her decision to roast King's Landing. When John refuses her, she says "Fear then". She was always prone to be impulsive and had just burned Varrus alive for the crime of knowing who the true successor should be AND was dealing with a lot of trauma from Mesande and Jora dying. She was not at baseline or stable when she made that choice.
I truly understand people's confusion or anger at this plot twist, but since when did GOT do things that the people wanted? If they did Rob and Ned never would've died in the first place and John Snow would be king.

Sorry but Dany did the right thing. Cersei was arrogant. The people in King’s landing are stupid and arrogant to believe those walls or Cersei could protect them from a dragon. Cersei in her stupidity played dirty and thought Daenerys has principles to just forget and move on from her killing off the most important people in her life. She would have saved her life and the people had she humbled down at the first place and did not kill Messandei. This is all Cersei’s doing. And the blame should all to her. That surrender has even made Dany more mad because she was meaning to burn everyone by not looking bad had the bell not rung. But when the bell rang, she simply showed her pent up anger and couldn’t let Cersei win by portaying her as calculated defeat. Daeny making statement to Cersei, you thought I was an angel huh? Just accept your defeat and not kill these people you weaponize against me. I’ll kill them all, this city of yours and you’ll know fear like you’ve never seen before. And there goes! 😂

Most people seem to say that Dany turned mad in the span of two episodes. For me I believe it was somewhere late in season 7 that I started to feel that a possible heel turn was on the horizon. They were subtle but apparent signs that she would do something to the effect and the absute final straw was when Cersei ordered to behead Missandei. I still feel that it was a a little rushed and could've easily ran into a 9th season with how fast things progressed. As far as Bran being king, It was very meh. Westeros turning somewhat into a democracy was an ok turn of events I suppose. Everything just felt a little anticlimactic to me. Thanks for the reply. The two most devastating losses for Dany have to be Mormont and Selmy. Selmy died, at least indirectly, because she took a city relatively peacefully. She also upended the entire economic system of that city and suffered greatly from the backlash that always happens when a leader does such things. So fast forward to King's Landing; she's taking a city and seeking to upend the social and dynastic cycles that have led to rampant corruption. A peaceful transition of power would be ideal but would also be a tough sell for someone who has already seen the dire effects of radically changing societal systems. As wrong as they may be, those systems have been in place for generations and a lot of people will lose wealth, standing, or prestige from such a change. It will have a great deal of repercussions yet again... unless they are too afraid to do so. Without Mormont or Selmy there to turn her from such lines of thought, indeed, the fact that they aren't there at all makes the scene believable to me. She and her cause have suffered greatly because of her clemency; therefore, fear, arguably the easier but more terrible route, is chosen.

Thanks for the reply. I was just thinking about some of the moments from the show where Dany made choices when dealing with those who oppose her. She burned a temple with a bunch of men inside. Granted they were terrible and stood in the way of her ascent to power, but yeah, that wasn't dragon fire, they wouldn't have died quickly at all. She ordered the Unsullied to massacre their former masters. Yes, evil is punished and the enslaved are free. But I wonder how guilty someone is by surviving and profiting from a system over which they have no control and no means to change. Even the unarmed onlookers were killed in this instance. She orders the summary execution of the slaver leadership. Again, they were bad men and represented a major hurdle to her maintaining her power base. So, the judgement was passed, and throats were slit. I could also talk about the execution of the Tarley men and wonder if enemy soldiers are guilty of anything for refusing to defect and remaining loyal to their leadership. That probably falls into the timeframe you're talking about, so I won't address it further. I guess my point is she probably was more brutal than perhaps we, the supportive viewers, assume she is, especially when viewed from different perspectives.

As soon as Cersei Lannister soldiers threw their weapons down, then the bell ringed, I thought it was a trap based on everything Cersei has done throughout the series. It could had been a trap, that's why I don't know why, John Snow & others were so trusting when they did it.

(in the voice of Chancellor Palpatine): Do it! Oh no, are they going to surrender without a good burn? Danny, do it regardless. Why are you flying him without fire? He needs to be warmed up for the Red Keep! Finally, there you go, that's a good Queen and a brave Dragon! Go go go, keep doing it, never stop! Greyworm? Go! Yes! Nice slash! John? What are you waiting for? Join the party!

If Missandei hadn't been killed this could've gone down differently, sure there were hints throughout the show she could be rageful, but the death of a beloved friend very much tipped the scales, this was the downward spiral moment for me.

Todo mundo ficou feliz pq o sino tocou e Daenerys tinha ganhado a guerra. Ela queimar a cidade não fez sentido nenhum. Foi só uma desculpa pada dizer que ela ficou louca. E matar ela no final. Totalmente desnecessário e injusto. 😣😐

Eu amei a decisão dela, essa cidade só tem mentirosos que tiraram tudo dela, foi + que merecido ela quebrou a roda matando todos esses lixos.

I don't think Dany is mad at all, fuck em! Lannisters and the people of KL had it coming. They had ample opportunities to flee the city or overthrow a true Mad Queen, Cersei, but they never did. Lannister soldiers have bannerman have perpetrated some of the worst atrocities across Westeros that we've seen.
Everyone saying Daenerys is mad, though nearly every other character on the show would do the same thing or worse if they had the capabilities. Dany showed restraint in nearly every situation, listened to the horrible advice of Tyrion which nearly lost her the war, and had 8 seasons of enacting justice on some of the most despicable slavers and villains in Essos.
People say she's "mad"" or "evil" for killing traitors and slavers lol. The Tarly's were traitors. They went against their Lord, the Tyrells, which were allied to Daenerys. Jon/Sansa would've been oathbound to cut off their heads lol. She used dragons, same difference. She also gave them the option to swear fealty and they refused, even though the Tarly's were oathbound to the Targaryens like just 30 years before.

am i the only one who didn’t think this reaction was uncalled for? Cersei was the reason so many of her loved ones died, especially rhaegal (rip my beautiful baby, u didn’t deserve to pass like that😭). also, let’s not pretend that everyone kings landing had that coming. AND, idk y everyone was so opposed to mad queen dany ruling the 7. like she’s a queen (literally and figuratively). -hardcore dany, dragon fan. and John snow hater. GET ON THE FUCKING DRAGON JOHN U GOT VISERION KILLED

I cant help it but the fact that literally everyone who is reacting is making the exact same face tyrion is making when dany starts burning the city is funny too me lol. Literally everyone's face looks just like tyrions when he shows on here

Daenerys Targaryen's inbreeding coefficient is 0.375. Charles the II, spains last Habsburg, who was impotent, drooled, mentally disabled and could barely walk had an inbreeding coefficient of 0.254. Just think about that one.
