Sometimes he puts out the air that he couldnt be bothered... that he is so important and many, many truly important life saving things he could be doing...
I know a lot of it comes from being an in demand studio musician for so long and being told you are great... Then again I have met jazz musicians playing on the streets of Everett who have an even loftier thinking of themselves...

I played in a sort of Toto tribute band called Mr Moto many years ago. Didn't take me long to work out that try as I might, I was about as good at covering Luke's licks as Mickey Mouse would have been. We never quite made it, although our keyboard player did go on to do quite a lot of work off stage with the band, so guess it wasn't all in vain!

Perhaps this is an exaggeration but is it possible that Steve has played guitar on half of the biggest hit songs over a 30 year period.

    • @RockDawg77
      @RockDawg77 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

It is not an exaggeration at all. If anything, it is a very realistic vast understatement that we can lend credence to. So hats off to your astute perception.
When we were teenagers in the 80s, about 300 of us crammed into a small music shop for a seminar with Steve Lynch of Autograph. Of course, we wanted to see the 8 finger tapping. Turn Up The Radio was all over the place and we went nuts when the radio stations played the extended intro version when we were hanging in the car, or anything Jeff Watson of Night Ranger played on. We had to see one these magicians at work with our own eyes and not one of us was going to miss it.
Steve said to us at one point during the seminar, "Every one of you in this room (multi room music shop, 300 people again) have at least one album with someone on it, and you will never guess who it is."
Obviously, Eddie VH came up pretty fast. Steve said "No, this guy has even pinch hit for Ed on some of their albums." Some said Yngwie, which we got a kick out of, some said SRV, David Gilmour, etc.
After a few rounds of being totally baffled and desperately wanting to know, Steve said "Steve Lukather from Toto. Luke's timing is so perfect, so spot on, because studio time is so expensive, even when Eddie is having an off day, they bring Steve in to get it done."
Every word of that 10,000% true. We're huge Toto and live Toto fans, as well as Steve's solo stuff, and have been hot on the trail of Steve and Ed's Phuxnot collaboration.
No luck yet, but the search continues. As we continue to rock all things Toto and HSAS, one of the other best kept secret super group collaborations from the glory days.
Just the thought of Steve and Ed putting something together is almost too good to be true. Kind of like when we found out Steve solo'd on Dirty Laundry. Like 9/11 or your first kiss, as Luke fans, the memory of the day we learned Steve was burning things up on Laundry is imprinted on our musical souls.
"Noooo way. I love that song. The solos are awesome. No wonder they are so sweet. That makes total sense. Coool." Of course, Joe Walsh brings just as much to the table in Laundry. Can't imagine being in a studio when Steve and Joe did their thing. Then again, the guitarist section of Hear N Aid with all those guys in the studio is pretty mind blowing, too. It was all part of a very rich time in music. Thankfully a lot of the artists are still making great music today.
Hope that helps. After that day in the music shop, as we got older and appreciated Toto more and more, every time we learn about something Steve has been on, or hear Africa, Rosanna, etc. overhead in a store, sitting in the chair at a dentist office, pretty much anywhere, it takes us to those same places and it's hard to sit still. Just the thought of Steve working with all of those guitarists through the years, with how nice of a guy he is, kind of makes you smile and warms the heart.
      Peace, brother!

hey steve, i love your work, i have always found your playing at a completely different level relative to the cats on the highest level we know, you and a guy named jack thammarat, you both have a great sense- ability relating to rock/jazz and the way you both bring that to the musical realm, our language is hard to describe the feeling one gets when hearing your music, you have such an impeccable;, for lack of my better vocab, knowledge of what a song needs, to be able to come up with the parts you do on the fly, and the material you have shared with us all these years, especially the latest stuff 2012- now, is mind blowing, but yet so very enjoyable, and like the toto music, man you are not like these other rock riff minded guys, your music is deep and from the heart, the soul, so deep it is amazing a person can actually musicalize a feeling to share with someone , i am not able to put the total of what i wish to share into words, but i believe you may be the most gifted of all players we have ever seen, your body of work speaks for itself, i am amazed when i listen to tracks like judgement day and that album, it is different, it is right to the heart, the record, but not rock, not jazz, not pop, a very new and exciting gamut of beautiful music, totally away from what we are used to hearing, yet so much to the heart of all of our lives, again amazing work, and the ability to play the guitar the way you do, the notes and chords, the emphasis, a unique tonal sound, it is immersing, jack thammarat is similar but you got it, a talent only you have, THANK YOU STEVE,...

However, those awful lawsuits have to be solved. I hope Justin Biebers record company has to pay them a shit ton of GOLD for stealing parts of "Going Home"! I mean, seriously? 9 Writers and they steal the chorus?
I'd love to see Dave, Simon and Steve P again with Toto, e.g. on the 45th Anniversary. Honestly, THIS band right now is NOT Toto. The three of them are all missing, Mike's gone, Nathan is doing other projects; and Greg Philinganes and Tony Spinner haven't been in the band since late 2008 - wich is a shame. ALL great musicians. But the core of the band are really Luke, Dave, Steve P and Joseph + Simon (I consider him to be part of the core, because he succeeded Jeff and stayed for 21 years, talk about devotion.) Which is why i would LOVE to have a new album from that Line up with some cool new tunes. If Simon would return, the guys could write more advanced music again.

The best live Toto gig I ever attended was at Hammersmith Apollo in 2011 (us Brits never got so many chances to see them here). However, lucky to have seen them with arguably their greatest line ups over the years. Is there any other band in the world that could lose the best drummer in the world....and replace him with.....the best drummer in the world? Jeff had groove and feel in spades and so glad I saw him before he died in 1992, but then Simon was the master technician. Different, but both masters of their art. Toto are the musical tour de force, the very best there is, simple as that.

Let's take a moment to see what's going on with Toto members past and present.
Bobby Kimball - touring with solo band, has dementia
Jeff Porcaro - died in 1992 after inhaling pesticides
David Hungate - came back for Toto XIV in 2014 and 2015, then retired again
Steve Porcaro - left in 1987, rejoined with the reunion and left last year when they broke up to focus on solo music
Lenny Castro - also left in 1987, came back in 2015 but left again after the band split last year
Fergie Frederiksen - toured with various tribute bands, died of cancer in 2014
Mike Porcaro - left Toto in 2007 after his ALS got too bad, died in 2015
Joseph Williams - left in 1988, rejoined for the reunion, now with this lineup
Jean Michel-Byron - left in 1990, now a session vocalist
Simon Phillips - left Toto in 2013 to focus on solo stuff, now does jazz
Greg Phillinganes - left in 2008 after Toto fizzled out for the first time, semi retired
Keith Carlock - left in 2015 after 3 tours to go back to Steely Dan
Steve Lukather - never left, never will
David Paich - had a seizure in 2018, now not touring to maintain good heath but same as Luke

New Toto is a tribute band. No Porcaro onstage. I bless the years between 1977-1987 and 2018-2019 where the original material was performed to the original quality. But now it's all about "getting back from my investment". Sorry. That's it for me.
A smart choice would have been Sam Porcaro on Bass and Vinnie Colaiuta on Drums now. Plus press statements from David Paich and Steve P about retirement from the road. But that's not how it works. God bless them all but this is milking the hits.

Actually, Paich (due to health) can’t tour anymore except for a local one-off show. Steve Porcaro wants to concentrate on tv/film and composing. Hungate retired. Jeff and Mike P. passed away. Kimball is ten years older than Luke, and is (from what I’ve heard) going into dementia. Then there’s the constant legal battles with both the old record label and with Jeff P. estate (wife). The initial reason why he and Joe toyed with the idea of naming the new band Dogs of Oz was to get out from under the legal B.S. while letting people know (in a cheeky way) that they are from Toto. Personally, I really like the Dogs of Oz band name. I hope they end up going that route.

Steve Lukather, Joseph Williams, Warren Ham, Dominique "Xavier" Taplin, John Pierce, Steve Maggiora, Robert "Sput" Searight, David Paich, Steve Porcaro, Jeff Porcaro, Bobby Kimball, David Hungate, Mike Porcaro, Fergie Frederiksen, Jean-Michel Byron, Simon Phillips, Greg Phillinganes, Keith Carlock, Lenny Castro, Tom Kelly, Keith Landry, Jon Smith, Timothy B. ALL these people played at TOTO live and in studio. TOTO was always changing over the years. There was never a THIS IS TOTO idea. And if you want to find THE TOTO, then its gone since Jeff died. But as a fan you know every tour and every record was different.

Well... maybe right now is not the Time for it. At least Simon said that he would be interested to play "definetely" again with Toto IF the circumstances were right and the material would include the albums that he recorded with Toto. Simon is busy with Protocol 5 and other projects, Dave has health issues, Steve Porcaro wants to do Studio work again and be at home, Nathan East is also busy + they have legal issues because of Jeff's ex-Wife who wants royalties from them despite being re-married to a semi-billionaire. That is just weird. Jeff's kids are adults, they even played with Toto and she definitely doesn't need the money from a band where she never was involved in.
