Most of the trobairitz belonged to the aristocracy, as did the Comtessa de Dia (late 12th century). This song has more manuscript witnesses than any other trobairitz song and is the only one to have made its way into a northern French chansonnier, where the melody is written also.
By this manipulation of troubadour conventions, the Comtessa suggests that she is above reproach and not guilty of betrayal; she is therefore within her right to demand fidelity of her "amic", and to complain if she does not get it-just as a lord (man or woman) would demand fidelity of his vassal.
The subtleties of this song allow us to become aware of the way in which this trobairitz, and other trobairitz as well, adopted but also adapted the poetic and political discourses available to them in order to "find" new female voices.
