great idea, but getting a tangle of lightning instead of workable strokes of lightning is there a setting adjustment to cloud density or something similar?
Go to Filter - Render - Clouds Then go to Filter - Render - Difference Clouds Then keep going Filter - Difference Clouds like 5x to give you a different look.
Since i use photoshop with a mouse, i cant use pressure sensitive brush tool for making lighning. Your cloud render method was a big brain idea. Great video
Select the Lighting layer. Go to Image > Adjustments > Levels. Then under output levels, move the right white tab on the bottom to the left side. This will make the image darker and remove the black.
Thank you! I love the illustration for my daughter's book I'm writing much better with the darker image and lightening. I hope it looks as good as the photoshop image once it's published and printed. Very helpful video.

added a Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen Edges step before Inverting, seemed to help

2:37 When i change it to "Screen" there's still Black/Dark around the lightning
