January 18th, 2014. Jean Pascal & Lucian Bute fought for the vacant WBC Diamond Light Heavyweight Championship in an All-Canadian Showdown in Montreal, Quebec. Bute’s NABF Light Heavyweight Title was also on the line.
Interestingly, both fighters had sparred each other back in 2005 when Bute was in the 3rd year of his pro career while Pascal was still an amateur.
Prefight records; Pascal 28(17)-2-1, Bute 31(24)-1.
In October 2007, Bute defeated Alejandro Berrio via TKO11 to become the IBF World Super Middleweight Champion.
Between February 2008 and November 2011, he successfully retained his title 9x.
In May 2012, Bute suffered the 1st loss of his career where he was relieved of his IBF World Super Middleweight Title via TKO5 by Carl Froch in Nottingham, United Kingdom.
After the loss, Bute moved up the Light Heavyweight division and debuted with a UD12 win over Denis Gracaev to become the NABF Light Heavyweight Champion in November of the same year.
For the 1st defense of his NABF Crown, he was scheduled to take on the Haiti-born Jean Pascal.
Entering the fight, the 33 year old Bute had notable wins over the likes of Jean Paul Mendy, Brian Magee, William Joppy, Edison Miranda, Glen Johnson, Dingaan Thobela, Alejandro Berrio, Sakio Bika & Librado Andrade (2x) while the 31 year old Pascal had defeated top oppositions such as Silvio Branco, Chad Dawson & Adrian Diaconu (2x).
Overal, Pascal outworked the surprisingly tentative 11 year veteran to triumph in the battle of former world champions with his unorthodox herky-jerky offenses before a crowd of 20,479 at the Montreal Bell Centre. Most observers believed that the enlistment of the great Roy Jones Jr in Pascal’s camp was the key to his victory.
In round 2, Bute was wobbled by a string of right hands to the head and a succession of body blows.
In round 4, Bute was shook by volleys of lefts and rights upstairs and downstairs shortly before the bell sounded.
In round 6, Pascal heavily outlanded Bute who’s left eye began to swell badly from the accumulation of right hands.
In round 8, Pascal sent Bute to the canvas with a volley of head shots which included the use of his left forearm and a rabbit punch thus referee Michael Griffin ruled it a slip instead of a knockdown.
In round 9, Pascal effectively used a double punching maneuver twice to set up a barrage of punches that rocked Bute.
In round 10, an accidental clash of heads occurred during the midpoint that opened up a cut on Bute’s damaged eye.
In round 11, Bute was able to rally and connect with a couple of clean head shots. However, Pascal who was playing possum sprung out of the corner and unleashed a vicious barrage of punches upstairs and downstairs to end the round.
In round 12, Bute started off aggressively in a desperate attempt to score a dramatic final round knockout and managed to hurt Pascal a number of times. However, the resilient Quebecer not only survived the onslaught but he was able to return fire every now and then en route to the final bell.
After 36 minutes of Light Heavyweight action, Jean Pascal became the new NABF Light Heavyweight Champion as well as the WBC Diamond Light Heavyweight Champion via UD12 with scores of 118-110, 117-111 & 116-112.

Bute was too timid. The Froch beating probably still on his mind. Pascal just toyed with him all through.

Bute out threw and out landed Pascal in round 3, so I have him that round. Just not active enough overall. Nice effort in the final two.

Absolute pitbull of a man. Usually undersized and underpowered and it just didnt matter to him. Shame that he was also probably on PEDs for a good amount of his career though. He always brought it 100%.
