I heard this magnificent work on C-Span and had no idea who had composed it. I e-mailed them and they replied that it was Lessel. I had never heard of him and oh what gorgeous music I have been missing! Thank you for sharing this rare gem! It is truly one of the most beautiful piano concertos ever written. Its chromaticism and craftsmanship show Lessel to be a musical genius! Braviss-iss-ISS-imo!

Lovely concerto, although I don't share the somehow excessive enthusiasm of a few comments I read herewith. To name one, Hummel wrote much worthy pieces in that period, not to forget Field and others. However there are selected gems in this half an hour music, especially the opening of Rondo, unconventional and extremely well written, selected moments of Adagio and the "Rossinian" closure of Allegro with a convincing genuine "crescendo" that redeems a quite conventional "donata form" first movement.

Interesting, right from the orchestral exhibition, which reminded me of certain compositions of Italian origin, namely Rossini. Possibly a coincidence. Too bad that the sound of the pianoforte inhibits a slightly more "modern" hearing. Lessel was Haydn's pupil.

Interesting that in the first movement the composer dispenses with the expected tonic 6/4 orchestral tutti and "conventional" extended cadenza. Stylistically this is somewhat retrospective for 1810, but it is quite charming without waxing too dramatic.
