- Maple Syrup is only made in early Spring.
Tapping Maple Trees in Spring
If trees have been tapped in previous seasons, do not tap within 6 inches of the former tap hole. If more than one tap is to be placed in the same tree, distribute the tap holes around the circumference of the tree. Be sure to avoid any damaged are of the tree.
Drilling the Tap Hole
Most spiles require either a 7/16 or 5/16 bit. Drill in 1.5” - 1.75” deep.. We wrap black electrical tape around the drill bit 1 1/4" from the tip to use as a guide. Drill at a slight upward angle to facilitate downward flow of sap from the hole.
Checking the Lines
It's important to walk the bush and remove any branches or debris that has fallen onto the lines. Check the sap lines for holes that may have occurred as a result of squirrels biting through the lines. Cut off any sections that exist and replace.
Setting the Spout
This is the final step to tapping the tree. Use a regular hammer to set the spouts. It just takes a few gentle taps.
