"That is my best memory of Grand Prix racing. Those few laps were just fantastic for me - out braking each other and trying to race for the line, touching each other but without wanting to put the other car out. It was just two guys battling for second place without trying to be dirty but having to touch because of wanting to be first. It was just fantastic ! I loved that moment." Gilles Villeneuve

Thank you for the video. Gilles Villeneuve got me hooked on F1 in my youth. His unquenchable thirst for racing and competition was always evident and so exciting to watch.

Interessante que o duelo Villeneuve x Arnoux foi tão intenso que a vitória de Jabouille(a primeira do motor turbo) quase passa despercebida, realmente um dos grandes duelos que assisti.

I honestly feel that Villeneuve & Arnoux's battle is the best underrated battle in F1 history

rene arnoux was definitely a champion 🏆
even yrs later in qualifying for ligier / Judd in the 80s arnoux was incredible driver
very fine line between glory of winning / being competitive but not quite...
these guys were all right on the edge,
just the way we like it💯😎

How could it be underrated when everybody calls it legendary all the time?

The reason for the 5 week gap between Monaco and the French in 1979 was the last minute cancellation of the Swedish Grand Prix

Murray not quite the polished broadcaster he became here. Nice to hear him on his journey towards it

I think Murray was very overrated. In this clip he gets the leader wrong at least twice, plus he brings no insight to bear. He just says what he sees, which as the viewer has eyes adds little. He was much better when paired later with James Hunt, as James brought the insight and James wasn't afraid of upsetting anyone. James could and did say what he thought, which he had the credentials to do as he had been there and done it.

Was this commentary really live though? Years ago on a F1 forum, old timers who had seen this race live were adamant that they remember Walker being way more lively/frantic during the Villeneuve/Arnoux fight. So we would have re-recorded a commentary for the highlights.
Edit: another comment below says as much.

Ummm, Murray had been commentating on Grands Prix since before the World Championship existed, calling the 1949 British GP on the radio, so he was 30 years into his journey by this time.

This isn't how I remember it. The sound wold have been telephone line quality even though it was just across the channel. Perhaps Murray had dubbed the commentary afterwards.

The music you hear at the very beginning of the video is the tail end of Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain", which is the music the BBC used for their 30 minute highlight program each evening following a European GP.
If you were watching live, yes, you would have heard the low bandwidth audio sent over to pair with the host broadcaster video feed. This is the summary program (which I think was called "checkered flag" or something like that), so you would have heard a much better editted and produced version in this program than the live version.

Could you imagine that happening now ?, all the whining radio messages, 'he didn"t leave me enough room, he wasn"t leaving me enough room, I think that was dangerous" !!, they would both be hauled before the stewards instead of letting them race, which if I am not mistaken is what they are supposed to be doing !
What a sanitized over regulated sport it has become !

One of the greatest F1 duels . Murray Walker is annoying to listen to he gets excited and jabbers inaccurately , maybe its because I'm not British . Canada Eh ! Salut Gilles !!!
