I have an older version of that set from like 9 years ago. It's held up well and it looks like they've taken a lot of the unnecessary stuff out and added more useful things. Mine came with polished ratcheting wrenches though.
I just bought the craftsman 216 piece set for $99. Great deal, imo. And I also noticed how much better the selection was. For me, I was looking for a decent amount of wrenches, particularly metric. The Kobalt set that was on sale for 99 only had 6 wrenches, only 2 of which were metric. The Husky set on sale for 99 had 10 wrenches, 5 standard and metric. Not bad. But the craftsman set had 14! 7 of each. And I thought it overall had less “useless” tools to pad out the piece count.
The 301pc from harbor freight is a pretty good socket set for $150 (w/25% off coupon right now). Complete shallow & deep 6 point. Easy to warranty too if needed. Taiwan made. The pliers, screwdrivers, and double Allen keys are all filler (and not great), the ratchets aren't the best either, but the socket set is good. If you are trying to fill your too cart with a socket set, this works for that. That Craftsman set looks nice for what you get. I put the list of contents for the 301 as the first reply - don't know why they don't list it on their site.
My first set was a 75 piece set from Craftsman 1/4,3/8 & 1/2 drive. Which I bought almost 35 years ago. No gimmicky stuff...Just practical sockets. And quality chrome ratchets.
I have a 135pc set that I got at a pawn shop that was brand new and I REALLY like the ratchet. The handle design got me at first but it’s really ergonomical
Just got the 270 piece mechanic set for 85 dollars on sears website the discounted price is 109 dollars not including tax plus I had 30 dollars in points.
Thanks for the good video. Great job on th unboxing, & then demonstration of its usefulness. It's good to see Craftsman is still supplying similar tools in what I would call their "classic" set, even though they're all made in China now.
You the man, I would have used the ratchet for hammer to, just would have used the tail of ratchet. Not a mechanic but I am a lineman. Really enjoy watching your videos.
man i did the same exact thing. went on a witch hunt looking in home depot for complete husky sets (i have had really good luck with husky tools in the past) but went with this same kit you did cause of the MIA sockets in the sets.
thats what i use ad i dont think i have ever ran into a situation where it didnt have the socket i needed, including the 5.5mm for the small stuff on my f250. only down side is i find that i break those black handle screwdrivers pretty fast but for what it costs im extremely impressed and if you add the the pittsburg pro breaker bar you can do most anything
Aaron Brownlee yes...I mean, I figure better to get mocked online than face to face. Lower chance of getting in a fist fight and all that shit. I appreciate your time/response though. I figured the torque aspect but there’s a lot of crossover. When you say the size of the bolt, I’m talking about where you have the same size for each drive size. Is there an amount of torque that is usually associated with each drive size,? Most battery torque wrenches for example seem to come in 1/4” right up to 1/2”...so it’s not particularly obvious to me, even if it seems like it should be. But yea Obviously if the bolt is a size such that you can’t even get the socket in 1/4” for example, that’s pretty clear...there’s lots of not so clear examples too though.
OH yeah the double wrench trick. I was doing that 45 plus years ago and it one of the first things any mechanic learns. I had a boss also shit on me one time seeing me do that so I handed him my 15 MM long reach wrench and said OK break it loose without the 2nd wrench. He outweighed me by a good 60 pounds and could not break it loose. I do the double wrench and broke loose the bolt. I think that Craftsman set is OK if it does what you intend to do with. Chrome sockets are for the MOST PART all alike today and why put a lot of money in them. Chrome sockets all will break with enough abuse and use so if they are not excessive in breakage who cares, the bolt doesn't know what brand is being used on it.
Have you used a wrench extender add on? Bought one off a tool truck for 45 dollars. Works really well doesn't slip unlike doing it with 2 wrenches... Defiantly saving my knuckles haha
should of checked the clearance isle or online if any hd near you had the 200 piece socket set they were down to $89 originally $99 200 pieces nothing but sockets for a sale they had i got that husky 268pc set for $139 on sale hell of a deal
I think I might get that craftman tool set for my shop next time I go to Lowe’s the one thing I hate is the Allen keys I have way too many of them hardly ever used them. The only ones I used is the ones that you can put a ratchet in it 3/8 or 1/2 socket adapter. Also I use the double wrench modification to loosen very tight bolts all the time my boss be losing his shit when he see it. I never broken a wrench doing it so far.😂😂😂
Justin what’s funny as hell was when you basically said “who uses the open end of a wrench?” Dude I almost died cause that’s what everybody is comparing to say which wrench is the best. I learned how to wrench on those craftsman raised panel wrenches!
Just saw your response. I second it. Damn fine set. One for home and one for work. Covers all my needs. Heavy use daily and havent broken anything except a 15/16 due to negligence.
I just used the gearwrench warranty "online" pretty smooth process, takes a week or better, but they will send a replacement. A lot of retailers are jumping in to the craftsman game and not all warranty them but ace hardware will.
The 200 and something piece set my parents bought me (gulp🙁 30somthing years ago) had red headed stepchildren and misfits as well, nothing changed there.
Yeah, just got the 3 hundred something set, think it’s 325. Three locations to warranty, Ace, Lowe’s, and Sears. I like it. Only problem with Pittsburgh and Harbor Freight is the skip sizes, that drives me nuts. Overall I’m happy with it
Just picked up a 3/8 cordless milwaukee ratchet a few months back. Coworker warned me not to manually break bolts that are to tight, loose with it. Watches justin dow manually break bolts loose with it as well as using it as a hammer lol safe to say i should be alright using it manually to break the bolt loose and than zip it out.
I am looking to invest into a Tekton tools. No skips and made in USA. I have been waiting for Craftsman to change for the better for the past couple of years. Kinda tired of waiting for things to get better.
Their sockets and ratchets are all Taiwan. They're still fine quality, just not USA made. Lots of their other stuff is USA made,If look it up on their website they have country if origin in their specs
The Husky 185 piece was solid but small. Good service truck set. They burn you on the 1/2” deeps and I will not tolerate the skips. That Dewalt 226 piece set with the tough system box is the shit. Lousy wrench selection but a fantastic socket selection for a buck and a quarter. Add a couple $25 wrench sets from the Amazon, a pliers set and you’re in good shape.
Ugh why did they put 12pt wreches in that set. I still use the chome socket set that I bought from sears almost like the set you bought in the organizer. I put them all in holders but still use the set today. This was before they started putting filler hex bits to call it 305pc. I have yet to break one yet although some are getting pretty warn. I did get the 5.5 back in the day with it and the deeps.
I'm just a guy that works on his own cars, but the best deal I ever found was on Facebook. a man in his eighties sold me two standing tool chests *full* of tools. From sockets to wrenches, feeler gauges, taps, drill bits. Even opened the drawer for air compressor nozzles/fittings yesterday to attach a harbor freight air nozzle. Paid $400. True story.
so I started buying Carlyle from napa for my service truck and honestly carlyle and sunex are holding up better than my snap on impact sockets, and it hurts deep inside
I bought one when I was like 17 I'm 43 now and it's held up I used to do transmission work still have all the sockets of course 13 mm 15 mm 3H Drive crack took them in to be replaced at Sears no questions asked oh yeah and the 3/8 ratchet gave out but that was after over 10 years of using it and if I remember right the set was over a 200 piece set and I know I didn't pay over a hundred fifty bucks like I said I was only 17 or younger trying to fix my own car
I did one a couple years back. They are ok for the price. here's a link to that video it was one of my first video posts th-cam.com/video/iXBEdeERI80/w-d-xo.html
Looks can be deceiving. The fitment was still pretty good overall & they held up better than the ICON sockets that I tried (Which was the 1st batch) Overall I'm going to give them a 7 out of 10. They were not as tight tolerance wise, but sometimes that can be a good thing. Cheers.
Great film, Dow. I’m almost ready to give Craftsman another chance, especially with the price of the set you showed and the attempt by S/B&D to return Craftsman production Stateside. Your set must have been assembled on a Friday with having duplicate wrenches. I’ve looked at the 225 piece and 301 piece Pittsburgh sets, I believe there are some skipped sizes. The website doesn’t have a list of individual items so I cain’t confirm for remembrance right now. Let people cry about the China-made stuff. Some of it is crap and some of it ain’t. My Gearwrench reversible ratcheting wrench sets are China-made and I’ve had issues with those. But, I’m given Gearwrench another shot as well with the swivel-head ratchet I bought. It’s a little longer than the Pittsburgh Pro version, but a little shorter than the Carlyle and Snap-on versions. I’ll see how it goes. If Tekton was sold locally I’d buy more of it.
Just go to Tekton's website, create an account for free That way whenever you buy directly from them online you're going to get free shipping AND 10% back from Tekton on every purchase.
Hvac 1 they do or at the very least they can solve them when the expensive engineers they hired are working away getting paid a fortune to design a quality product and then the devil stepchildren equipped with clipboards and the clickiest pens known to existence come along and force them to shave off 90% of what made the new product an improvement, and replace them with hyperbole and double the real specs on the new spec sheet, and a model number that suggests it’s a massively improved product.
find the tool dealers in the nearest big town, most dealers are pretty cool, set up a Saturday meet and swap out any warranty tools or buy what ya need , I don't get it, I live in Alaska, and in a 100 mile radius we have 12 snappy reps, 4 matco, 1 mac dealer and one cornhole dealer
Funny you mention the 5.5mil. I literally judge a socket set by if it has the 5.5mil. That's a must in my eyes, thus is the reason why I'm pushing Tekton to everyone I know. Stay golden Mr. BEESFUCKINGKNEES
Those look a little nicer than the Chinese Craftsman I’ve seen. Made in Taiwan? Edit: the Lowe’s site Q&A says China. I know some of their smaller sets are Taiwan.
Harbor freight socket sets aren’t bad but the ratcheted they give you are complete trash. I’m talking about the big sets that come with a lot of pieces
I wish these "sets" would not include hex keys. I got a ton of them, it's hardly ever used. I just want a kit that consist of ratchets, sockets, wrenches and no fluff pieces
I'm a big fan of the craftsman 120 tooth gun metal ratchets. Have the 3/8 and the 1/4 plan to pickup the 1/2. Yeah they aren't serviceable but castle brake parts cleaner and BG penetrating fluid will work well. Kills the harbor freight ratchets for sure imo. Cornwell comes to our shop, won't open an account for me so I won't be buying anything from them. Can get anything I need of just as good quality from craftsman/harbor freight/husky/gear wrench at 1/2 the price. 😂
Why won’t they open an account for you? Let me ask you what dictates whether you use 1/4 3/8 1/2 etc? Not sure what to prioritize or how to choose to get started.
Justin Bish thanks I appreciate your time/response, as well as not feeling any need to question if I’m serious/stupid etc. I figured the torque aspect but there’s a lot of crossover. Is there an amount of torque that is usually associated with each drive size,? Most battery torque wrenches for example seem to come in 1/4” right up to 1/2”...so it’s not particularly obvious to me. Ive seen people say 3/8” is not necesary might as well go 1/4” or 1/2”...the area’s where there’s a significant amount of crossover is where it’s not clear to me. But yea Obviously if the bolt is a size such that you can’t even get the socket in 1/4” for example, that’s pretty clear...there’s lots of not so clear examples too though.
@@Fee.1 I did work on all high end europeon cars. I now work on mainly domestic, with some benz and land rover etc. I work at a diagnosis shop so we fix everything. Most motor and suspension can be done with a 3/8 drive fine. Anything that has to deal with frame or subframe I always use a 1/2 same with CV axle nuts or strut nuts and bolts. It really just depends. Most belt driver components can be removed with a 1/4 or 3/8 as well. If you use a 1/4 you can tell when it'll snap or skip teeth. I been wrenching in a shop setting for over a year so when you're doing it daily its kind of different.
#Justin_Dow. Have you seen the Husky 6 Point Impact Sockets. They have a few combinations of the sets. All 6point sockets. There is a 44pc 3/8 set and a 64pc 1/2 set. The 1/2 set goes from 3/8 to 15/16 and 13mm to 27mm both shallow and deep sockets with chamfered corners skipping no sizes. $200. Not sure the sizes of the 3/8 set but I think its $70. They both come with 2 extensions 3in and 6in. A 1/2 pinless u-joint/64pc set. And a 3/8 pinless u-joint/44pc set. Also a 1/2f to 3/8m adapter/64 pc set and a 3/8f to 1/2m adapter/44pc set. I have a bunch of diff tool brands from expensive to typical. I love quality. But I like to save $$ to. Husky has some good stuff tbh. The wrenches are good. very strong/good grip. The ratchets and sockets are good for the $$. The extensions are good aswell. Even the torx/hex bit set is good. The warranty is great to bc for a cheaper tool if I have an issue its taken care of. I havent had any and Ive put them through there paces for awhile now. I believe its $$$ well spent. Im going to get both these sets myself and prob add the impact torx/hex bits to the list. Check them out and see what you think. For the price you cant go wrong...
Why on earth did you drop good money on Craftsman after they just let you down so big on warranty? Go Tekton man. All no-skip sets, comes with nice trays and rails options, industry leading warranty.
It was fast, cheap & I still have some love for Craftsman however slight it might be. Made in China, Made in US it doesn't matter much to me anymore, but will they hold up in a professional environment? That's the bigger question.
Yes, but due to the cost of impact sockets I'm going to hold off and keep running with what I got at the moment. Only a half a dozen or so are worn out and I can borrow what I need until next payday. I would go with HF, but I think their sets are incomplete, so I will most likely go with Husky Impact 1/2 drive when the time comes.
I warrantied many snapon tools from there online sevice. I think on the sockets all you gotta do is send a pic and your adress and name and they will send you a new one without shipping the socket. Still about 3 days.
It allways seems every company allways leaves some size out so you have to buy one socket that's 20$ just make a complete set don't skip sizes charge more or at least offer a complete set at home Depot or Lowe's or where ever it's better to have customers who recommend tools to others who then in turn buy more tools idk maybe it's only me who thinks this way.
not a bad set I guess, but as you said, those wrenches have changed. Almost looks like they are made in India instead of China. But hopefully they work
Good point. I was screaming about the 5.5mm at first. I'm glad you mentioned that, some Asian cars require a 5.5mm not just Ford.
7/32 also works
This is why I like your videos not only do you show your first impressions but also do real word work with the tools not just stick a bolt in a vice and say wow this works well. Nope you do the real deal bud. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Much! Cheers!

Could you not use a small rubber mallet to gently tap on that rear main flange?
Love the repair vids, need more of these Justin!

Dad and Grandpa had all Craftsman still soft spot for the brand
7:47. Late 90's GM and I imagine other years use 5.5mm to fasten down ignition coils.
My first video of you in action in the shop, liked it real with small impact used as hammer.
Honestly just seems like a really good, down to earth guy. Keep up the vids!

I have a 135pc set that I got at a pawn shop that was brand new and I REALLY like the ratchet. The handle design got me at first but it’s really ergonomical

What dictates whether you use 1/4 or 3/8 or 1/2 or 5/8 drive etc. ?
The size of the bolt and how tight it maybe on. Are you seriously asking this question?

David Gerber glad I took advantage of that one. Now they went up to $200. Should’ve bought 2 of them since it really is a pretty complete set.

Woah late to the game sorry fee. Harborfreight 301pc mechanics tool set.
The 5.5 is also used on the 16 Chevy impala and 16 dodge dart.

Lousy wrench selection but a fantastic socket selection for a buck and a quarter. Add a couple $25 wrench sets from the Amazon, a pliers set and you’re in good shape.
I was thinking about the 450 piece set but this has a lot less garbage like 250 SCREW HEAD BITS. So this might be better, less garbage.
Paid $400. True story.
Legend has it he also purchased it from some man in his 80s.
Good video Justin, I'm just curious are the 1/2 inch Drive Craftsman sockets 6 or 12 point?
so I started buying Carlyle from napa for my service truck and honestly carlyle and sunex are holding up better than my snap on impact sockets, and it hurts deep inside
I feel like 1/2 drive deep chrome sockets are not necessary but deep impacts are..
Love these shop videos and vlogs. Keep it up 💪
What happened to the snap on set you bought a couple of years ago?
Which one do you prefer??? This set or the Kobalt???
I just bought this set today for $99 total $105 it was worth the money!
Me too106
What do you think of the kolbolt sets?? Would like to see a video on that..
I did one a couple years back. They are ok for the price. here's a link to that video it was one of my first video posts
th-cam.com/video/iXBEdeERI80/w-d-xo.html
great video Justin.
Those tools look exactly like the craftsman tools I bought in the early 80s
Just go to Tekton's website, create an account for free
That way whenever you buy directly from them online you're going to get free shipping AND 10% back from Tekton on every purchase.
Picked this set up yesterday at Ace for $107.00 with tax (online only) until Dec 3, 2019 🤩
They should let real mechanics like your self design their sockets sets.
Capri claims to do that
Hvac 1 they do or at the very least they can solve them when the expensive engineers they hired are working away getting paid a fortune to design a quality product and then the devil stepchildren equipped with clipboards and the clickiest pens known to existence come along and force them to shave off 90% of what made the new product an improvement, and replace them with hyperbole and double the real specs on the new spec sheet, and a model number that suggests it’s a massively improved product.
Big box brands do not care. Their suits seems to think they know all they need to know about what we want in tools
find the tool dealers in the nearest big town, most dealers are pretty cool, set up a Saturday meet and swap out any warranty tools or buy what ya need , I don't get it, I live in Alaska, and in a 100 mile radius we have 12 snappy reps, 4 matco, 1 mac dealer and one cornhole dealer
They should send you the sockets charge you if you don’t send them back the old problem solved.
Honda air filter hoses use 5.5 on the clamps.
Funny you mention the 5.5mil. I literally judge a socket set by if it has the 5.5mil. That's a must in my eyes, thus is the reason why I'm pushing Tekton to everyone I know.
Stay golden Mr. BEESFUCKINGKNEES
Nice review man👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Skip size tool set are depressing
I wish the wrench extenders weren’t so much I think they are like $60 for a slug of metal to clip on box wrench lol
Cheers Brother!
Why are you breaking sockets?
Where did u get the neon green gloves
off the Gearwrench Tool Truck
@@JustinDowDIYcentralhighway dam i want some but no tool truck access for me
@@ragincajungarage it's ok. The company that sold them went out of business anyway. Check Oreilly's for a close match in Orange
@@JustinDowDIYcentralhighway cool thanks
Those look a little nicer than the Chinese Craftsman I’ve seen. Made in Taiwan? Edit: the Lowe’s site Q&A says China. I know some of their smaller sets are Taiwan.
asm154 China
23:49 - lol. Thank you for the cool video, Sir
21:10 got tit, Com ON 👍 👍
Does anyone else always add a 4.5 and 5.5 shallow&deep individually?
Good video
Best budget set is klutch 305 piece set. Usually on sale for 245. Hardly any skips and all 6 points. Huge selection of combination wrenches
They always seem to leave something out so you will buy some more.
Harbor freight socket sets aren’t bad but the ratcheted they give you are complete trash. I’m talking about the big sets that come with a lot of pieces
You deal with Advance Auto?
No.
@@Fee.1 depends how much torque is needed. How small the area is etc. Many different factors
Justin Bish so there’s not really a defined torque spec or something just go by feel, aside from the specific cases you cited ?
What happened to your tool dealers?
I explain in the next video. th-cam.com/video/9PW42FbcT7k/w-d-xo.html
Justin Dow ok
husky has a no questions asked warranty on all hand tools
Why on earth did you drop good money on Craftsman after they just let you down so big on warranty? Go Tekton man. All no-skip sets, comes with nice trays and rails options, industry leading warranty.
It was fast, cheap & I still have some love for Craftsman however slight it might be. Made in China, Made in US it doesn't matter much to me anymore, but will they hold up in a professional environment? That's the bigger question.
@@JustinDowDIYcentralhighway so what's you solution to the impact deeps? I thought that's what you were looking to get.
@@JustinDowDIYcentralhighway have you looked at Tekton?
Jesse Buck Not really. I saw a ratchet once a couple weeks ago at the meet up
What the hell is your problem ?? Use a prybar not a flathead. 😂 Great videos Justin. Keep'm coming. 👍

Dang I actually like this even though I hate Craptsman
Napa lady, you just answered your own question. Go to napa buy Carlyle stuff and forget the big box stores...
He is doing a Craftsman tool review for the viewers.
G Wheeler Maybe next Time around. Let’s see if these made in China Craftsman Sockets, Wrenches & Ratchets Hold Up.🍻👍
I warrantied many snapon tools from there online sevice. I think on the sockets all you gotta do is send a pic and your adress and name and they will send you a new one without shipping the socket. Still about 3 days.

Jeff Cuevas they recently just went back to Texas. Might want to check it out
@@johnnyhernandez5539 yup, fortworth Texas. But still have to wait a few years just to get the bugs worked out
It allways seems every company allways leaves some size out so you have to buy one socket that's 20$ just make a complete set don't skip sizes charge more or at least offer a complete set at home Depot or Lowe's or where ever it's better to have customers who recommend tools to others who then in turn buy more tools idk maybe it's only me who thinks this way.
That kit is nice the wrenches look like junk but it's a decent socket set and very good price
Thats the problem with these craftsman box sets, got the 255 piece from sears got home sockets and wrenches all over the place
#chulahotsauce I'm a hot sauce lover and thanks I've been looking for a set for home use thanks just as always . Keep killing it bro🤙
TEKTON all you gotta do is take a photo of your broken TEKTON tool and they will send you another. Plus made in Michigan
not a bad set I guess, but as you said, those wrenches have changed. Almost looks like they are made in India instead of China. But hopefully they work
