50:59 I used to assume the flames were related to Chaos too, until I thought about it for a second and realized it’s the opposite. The Tribe set fire to the shrine. They literally tried to smoke Chaos out of the water so they could kill it, and they didn’t care if the peaceful Chao got burned or suffocated in the process. That’s why Chaos is so vengeful when they do encounter it in person.
1:42:33 A somewhat valid critique of the game's exposition priorities is that you have to talk to some specific Echidna warriors as certain characters to overhear the fact that there's a supernatural barrier stopping invaders from getting too close to the shrine. Tikal bypasses this by befriending the Chao and the 'Spirit' that protects them, whilst others are still locked out for the threat they pose. Again, they probably should've made this more clear instead of burying it. I guess you could call it a reward to those who want to know everything but most others will consider it a plot hole when the writers had actually thought up an explanation.
2:39:27 …Dude, Sonic isn’t just being empathetic, he’s also thinking long term. Sealing Chaos away doesn’t change anything, it will just delay the wrath, possibly bottle it up to the point where it just gets worse each time. Even assuming you sealed Chaos away here and now, and you successfully played Keep Away with Eggman and the Master Emerald for the rest of his lifespan, there’s no doubt someone else will want to control the God of Destruction one day. The only way to stop that is to get to the heart of the problem: Why does Chaos want to destroy things? How do we change that?
Delaying this situation doesn’t save lives, it only endangers future ones.
Sonic is wiser than you’re giving him credit for. And I appreciate this moment a lot for that reason.
its crazy that the robot had the most emotional story by a LONG SHOT...
So my first memory with this game was finding it hidden in my parents bedroom sneaking the disc to my GameCube and playing it in secret for weeks. I was always so careful to return it when I was done to ensure I didn’t get caught. Months later I lost one of my baby teeth and the tooth fairy had visited in the night, taken my tooth and left me Sonic Adventure DX. Nostalgia takes over and I have a tough time admitting the flaws but deep down know it’s not perfect. Yet I still play it at least once a year.
43:40 It's never said outright, but you're doing a *massive* amount of damage to the ship in fiveof the six stories (since Gamma only really busts the place up when it's already in the ocean): Sonic & Tails breaking the wings and struts with the carrier's own cannons, Knuckles spinning the carrier like a fidget spinner with Sky Deck's manual gyroscope, and Big and Amy pouring just way too much aquarium water right onto the engines all at once probably did Eggman's head ship in.
It still could have been made cleared, but man this really was the absolute worst first launch of a lead armada ship Eggman could have ever had, right behind Sonic 3's launch base sending the Death Egg straight into volcano reef.
I never really thought about Big pouring water onto the engine. Given that there's a switch there and there's a monitor that says it's specifically an "emergency drainage switch", I would've assumed that part of Hot Shelter was specifically a reservoir for draining the aquariums into. Weird design on Eggman's part, not the most 300 IQ play.
@@SodaCrab It makes sense if the aquariums are meant as some sort of impromptu coolant system I guess. Like Eggman dgaf about the fish, they're robot batteries, so if there was a fire or something down in the engine, this would be a great way to smother it. If the ship wasn't damaged in so many other ways, maybe it would've been fine? I'm genuinely unsure if we're thinking about this harder than the devs were.
33:18 I don't remember if any of the red light balls tell you this, but the car goes faster the more rings you have. Makes the moment-to-moment decisions on that map feel like they have some more importance than just stockpiling rings for the Chao Garden.
The computer at the beginning of the level goes over all the cart controls.
Pokemon and sonic, you're like if Chris Chan took the good path
@@SodaCrabwith all the Chris Chan similarities, is the Soda in your name referencing orange Fanta ⁉️
BIG THE CAT GOES FISHING?? THATS WHY HES LIKE THAT IN FRONTIERS??
I actually never played Frontiers, I can't believe they actually put Big in another game
@@SodaCrabbut big was in a ton of other sonic games tho. Not those 2. I'm extremely confused that you didn't know, tbh 🤔
@@Hyp3rSonic I know he's been in some other ones but I didn't know he'd been in one in a while
Well, he has been in Team Sonic Racing, and thats 5 years ago@@SodaCrab
59:10 the reason Tails is more confident here is because Sonic is with him, whilst I would say his lines sound vaguely more threatening, Tails' belief in Sonic far outweighs his fear of Eggman, and when Sonic is out of the picture his fear of the guy comes out full force, leading to the amazing scene before the Egg Walker fight.
41:21 this path to the capsule you’re describing is actually how the capsule is reached in speedruns, you just have to hit the capsule *while* the gravity is changing and the camera is shifting. If you get it slightly wrong you soft lock the game!
The creativity is rewarded, but god do you have to fight for it
I have never seen your stuff before but I gotta drop a like and comment for the sheer dedication of a 2hour sonic video essay
Since you're playing on the Steam version, I highly recommend using the mods to change the DX version to the Dreamcast version so you can have the original lighting system. There's quite a bit of stuff out there to help fix the DX version.
I'm definitely planning on it if I ever replay it again for my own enjoyment! For the purpose of the review I just wanted to play the version that SEGA gives you right out of the box, since I didn't want to give them credit for things that fans had to fix about their crappy port.
*The* authoritative Sonic youtuber Cybershell made a video with 2.5 million views going over all of DX's issues. I've hardly touched a Sonic game, but if you're engaging in silly internet Sonic discourse it seems like a mistake to ignore all that background. Like SEGA making cheap shitty decisions is well known, so if you're gonna dunk on a Sonic game, you might as well give it a fighting chance by using all the well known fan improvements. You're not gonna make a Silent Hill 2 video essay these days without using Enhanced Edition.
@@SodaCrabTo be fair, a healthy amount of fixes made through mods to the PC release are simply restoring the functionality of systems and effects that worked perfectly fine on the Dreamcast. SA2 started being ported to GameCube almost immediately after the Dreamcast release was finished and was done by the same team, but SADX was done years later while the main SonicTeam was already overwhelmed developing Heroes, and saw a ton of retrofitting- time better spent on properly porting the game to different hardware that broke audio mixing, lighting, transparency effects, and even the controls and collision.
TL;DR SA2B isn't perfect but SADX is a blight upon society and a crime against art.
I always interpreted tails’ Version of the cut scenes as how he wanted them to go.
In his head, he wanted to be the cool hero like sonic.
So when he has to fight Eggman by himself, he suddenly seems way less confident an egg man sounds more intimidating because sonic isn't there.
I thought it was really neat as a kid, especially because I related more to tales than sonic.
Honestly, listening to this just reminds me that I really love sonic adventure
Definitely appreciate your words at the conclusion, this game may not be perfect, and I can certainly laugh at its quirks, it was truly magical to me as a child and to this day I have never played anything as openly ambitious as this game was. Thank you for a lovely video about my all time favorite game :)
That nostalgic feeling/smile of comfort as it sets 🥹😊
Big was added to show off everything the Dreamcast could do - I don’t think his addition meant us missing out something ‘better’ lol, that’s not really how development works
I'd argue that the fishing games on the Dreamcast probably did a better job of showing that the Dreamcast was capable of fishing games than Big's campaign did, I don't think showing off the Dreamcast's capabilities was a great excuse to add him in. And I get that they probably didn't make a conscious choice of "okay we can either add in Big or (x amount of content), let's go with Big", but the fact of the matter is that they allocated time and resources into developing a whole new play style that could've been allocated elsewhere. Assuming they still made the most of out development time and resources, then it follows that in a world where Big didn't exist, the devs that worked on it could've spent more time elsewhere, whether that would've meant more original content or bug fixes and polish. This is true of any project where you're working under a time limit, whether that's a movie, a book, a TH-cam video, or even just a presentation for work; you can cut out things that aren't as important to save time and resources to apply to the parts that matter. And even if none of that was true and the game outside of Big's campaign would be otherwise identical if Big never existed, I still think the game would be better without him. His campaign adds nothing at best if you know what you're doing and get through it quickly, and it actively detracts from the experience if you don't know exactly what to do.
@SodaCrab They needed to do what they did with Big in Frontiers: restrain him to the fishing hole and make the fishing strictly optional. That's how fishing worked in Ocarina of Time, which also had a mandate to show off every capability and accessory of its early 3D console with a million zillion minigames, but pulled it off and nobody says Zelda had a rough transition to 3D.
@@SodaCrabI kinda disagree... for part of it. I appreciate that bigs levels are extremely short, which means that it will take way less time to speedrun them(for me) and the sonic series main appeal(in gameplay) is the speedrunning aspect, imo. But yes, I do speedruns of almost every level from sa1, expect maybe the final bosses, and doing a full game speedrun. But anyways, all of this to say is that there was value to adding big, but it wasnt the best executed
Actually, I did that for most of the levels. But it's been a while since I last played sa1, which I have been meaning to play 😂, so I respectfully disagree, somewhat, but I respect your opinion
Oh, and it doesn't mean that Big is suddenly good, mind you, but I still think that Amy has the worst gameplay, imo. But Big is 2nd
It's gotten to the point that I don't take a Sonic Adventure review seriously if it isn't almost 3 hours long lol.
Amazing work on this video
As a kid I went out of my way to make sure I could cheese the big levels as fast as possible..
I would get as close to froggy as possible so I would have the least amount of distance to reel him in. The life belt upgrade helped a lot with this.
This allowed me to finish his levels within a matter of minutes.
Mind you this doesn't make his gameplay good, it just let me get through it as fast as possible.
Rewatching this again and this is one of my favorite videos from you! Excited to see what else you work on in the future and I’m happy to support you making them!
Everybody stay calm!!! A new long form essay from the almighty crab of soda!!!
Ironically, the so-called Dark Age of Sonic is still more memorable and more fun than most of the 2010's Meta Era. There may be jank and there may be duds but there's infectionus charm the 2000's era has that the 2010's just doesn’t have.
Heroes' sincere cheese -> Pontac Era' smug self-aware "Hey, aren’t we stupid and lame guys?" energy
Babe wake up new soda crab vid dropped
I think the chaos 4 fight is fought with chaos being the water making it more solid since after the cutscene the fight location has barely any water in it where it's hard to drown yourself
I don't necessarily think that was the intention, but I can definitely see how you interpreted it that way. I kinda just chalk it up to the game taking some creative liberty with the location, the arena for the fight itself isn't even actually that lake in the Mystic Ruins, it's its own separate area.
I think knuckles was able to get the chaos emerald from chaos at the end because he couldn't escape from the clutches of the enchilada!
But actually my head canon is that this never happened before because chaos was able to escape each time.
I love the witty commentary, I'll def watch the vid for Adventure 2 when it comes out
They probably put tails’ Power up in the past because they wanted kids to explore it and talked to some NPCs.
A very-well-made video. Even if I might not agree with every takeaway, your perspectives are genuine and well-argued. (Thank you for the DX disclaimer too; heading off the first thing everyone would comment on and committing to how you are choosing to evaluate the game upfront was a great choice.)
Also you weren't the only one confused/scared by that second part of Sonic's version of Lost World - I thought you were continuing to get deeper and deeper into the ruins and you were looking over some weird underground city with poisonous green fog on the ground and harsh light leaking in from above - it took me until fairly recently to notice it's just a super-low-res skybox of a cloudy sunset on outdoor ruins and those are trees on the bottom.
Genuinely outstanding content brother! God bless!
Well worth the hype. Finally got to it, Crab. See you on the next one.
44:00 if you pay attention during the middle part of Sky Deck you can see parts of the ship blowing up and falling, Eggman is so desperate to be rid of Sonic that he's straight up self destructing his own battleship in order to stop him, that's what causes the ship to fall alongside all the destruction that goes on inside the ship with bits and pieces falling out of the various hatches.
very awesome video , love your presentation & crabby persona lol keep it up !! thank you for sharing with us !!
Speed ran every vid in a day, wasn't ready for this one.😢❤
Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 are two of my favorite games of all time, and I think both are still good till this day. I always thought the "rough transition" thing people associated with Sonic was never actually true given that his first two 3D games were honestly really damn good transitions. The formula and groundwork was there, but SonicTeam decided to throwaway what they did in favor of trying to go in different directions which led to questionable 3D Sonic games post-Adventure games.
Anyways, I think there's a lot of stuff within the game that still holds up today. SA1 obviously has some issues that I from the early 3D days of gaming (which are exacerbated by the DX port majority of people have played since that's the version widely available), but things such as the character controls, character writing, story, and music are genuinely great stuff.
It's a bit sad to say, but Sonic's first attempt into 3D is possibly the best he's ever controlled in 3D. The controls feel absolutely tight and responsive when moving around and attacking. Sonic has such a silky smooth feel that it feels absolutely wonderful running around the big open levels and exploring everything. I like that SA1 feels like SonicTeam actually tried to implement a bit of the Sega Genesis DNA. There's a sense of momentum in the game that is removed in future 3D Sonic games. The momentum in SA1 is good, but you can tell there's so much more they could have expanded on in future games if they stuck with the controls from SA1. Other than Sonic himself, everyone else controls pretty good, too.
I know people will complain about the other characters playstyles (mostly Amy and Big gameplay), but I've never had an issue with them. I do think it's weird to have fishing in a Sonic game (and I get that the developers wanted to introduced something so players can have a change of pace), but it comes off as pretty inoffensive to me with how easy it is and how quick you can finish Big's story. The way people talk about Big's gameplay makes it seem like you're playing it for as long as you play the Werehog in Sonic Unleashed. Do want to mention the hub worlds real quick and say that I absolutely adore them. The NPCs really do help make Sonic's world feel a bit more fleshed out with all the people and their quirkiness. A lot of the NPCs are very memorable such as the lady in love with a Burger stand man.
While SA1 doesn't have my favorite story in a Sonic game (that goes to the sequel), I still think the story is pretty good and the way it's presented is rather ambitious (for the time) with the 6 different character view points.
There's so many great story moments that makes SA1 still stand out. Tails and Amy goes through their own personal arcs of growth with both not wanting to rely on Sonic forever for help, with Tails learning to believe in his own strength, and Amy playing the role of a protector for a bird and in the end wanting to work harder to gain Sonic's respect. Gamma is an amazing emotional story of a robot defying his master and setting on a personal adventure of freeing his brothers, but in a way of killing them to let the animals inside them free. The brief glimpses of the past with the Echidna Tribe and their destruction is great world building for Knuckles, and one thing I really love is how the Lost World level has a lot of stuff to view that ties into the main story.
But yeah, I love Sonic Adventure. I think it's one of the best Sonic games worth experiencing.
I really don't get the whole "rough transition" thing anyways, it's been echoed so much even though it's kind of baseless. Even back when I was younger and got all of my opinions from TH-camrs, I still didn't agree with the rough transition narrative. I mean hypothetically if you were to count 3D Blast then I guess there could KINDA be an argument for there being a rough transition, because that game is kinda weird and to be blunt not very good. But counting a more or less 2D game that called itself 3D because it used some clever 3D effects doesn't really sit right with me. Adventure 1 and 2 were the first real 3D Sonic games, and at least at the time, they nailed it.
"Everyone's favorite blue hedgehog" is such a nothing statement, lmao
You know what? I fully appreciate everything you said about Big. I always hated his entire existence. He never should have made another appearance after Sonic Adventure. And it's not even just about his story, I don't think he belongs as a recurring character in this franchise.
Your Gamma section almost had me crying again... Such an underrated story
I'm glad they brought him back and put him exactly where he belongs: in an optional fishing minigame.
1:05:01 Likely a carry over from the early sonic adventure which was originally envisioned as an RPG
When I first played Sonic DX on Gamecube I made sure not to make the same mistake with Big and after finishing Sonic's Storyline I went and did Big's and got it out of the way.
I adore Sonic Adventure it got me back into the Fandom after getting bored of it on Sega Mega Drive.
Excited for the start of the SCCU
Just wait until phase 4 when I kill off Soda Crab and Lemonade Lobster and they get replaced by Sweet Tea Snail and Coconut Water Crawfish

man i love sonic adventure so much, i am pissing myself i am so hyped!
2:09:50 except for the tutorial button that appears when you choose a character that everyone ignores because they expect a Sonic game to be simple to play.
the sfx issue in sadx is probably a pc problem, cause ive never heard them in the gamecube version. and bigs lures are only to get heavier fishes, which is only for the B and A ranks where you need to catch a 1000g and 2000g fish respectively
You talkin abt the port at the beginning is exactly why I always play with the dreamcast conversion mod. As a kid I even bought a dream cast cuz I didnt like how DX looked lol
The cat guy has a fishing rod, is it a fishing mini game?
I guess I should've thought about that, he does just carry around a fishing rod doesn't he lmao
This was a mighty fine video! I like your humor and level-headed analysis. It didn’t feel like three hours at all.
I only played this game a few years ago, and I quite liked it then, mostly for the novelty of it being like a classic Sonic game in 3D. It’s even the main reason I bought a Dreamcast. Replaying the game, though, that novelty wears away, the “so bad it’s good” parts cease to be funny, and the real substance of the game lasts shorter and shorter as you get better and faster, leaving the filler to take up the majority of the experience. Whatever; at least the first playthrough was fun, the aesthetic is nice, and it’s a neat sort of “history piece.” And of course I’d be lying if I said the game doesn’t still have its moments.
Oh, and about those obnoxious background noises, they’re in the Dreamcast version too. It’s possibly even worse there because some of the turrets in Sky Deck let out a dreadful, extremely-loud roar that sounds like microphone feedback. Don’t play that stage with headphones on!
1:23:15 I wonder what happened to SKY DECK!
Babe wake up I’m rolling around at the speed of sound
Sonic did NOT have a rough transition into 3D
I played Sonic Adventure as an adult but I emulated it for dreamcast. It's definitely no Sonic Adventure 2 but it's what honestly started me into the Sonic fandom. They did a lot in terms of visual storytelling but as a result they don't explain much to you. I don't think these are faults necessarily but I do think it could be a turn-off for someone who might not want to spend the time to explore the areas. These aren't things that a kid is going to pick up on, probably. But I think the target audience in Japan was supposed to be a bit more mature. There is a lot that is Lost in Translation down to some of the timing on the audio. But that's why I really appreciated the visual storytelling. You can tell there's something deep within this game even if the lines of dialogue are kind of screwy and it makes you curious. That's all on accident of course. I can't use that as a Plus in favor of the game. Honestly the first Sonic Adventure did a lot of really cool things That You Don't See often for example, each of the characters having different perspectives that affect how the player sees events. SA1 is..... not for everyone. I definitely don't think it was as janky as a lot of people make it out to be. Like it's got Jank don't get me wrong. But it's also not an objective fact that everyone defending it is blinded by Nostalgia either. Like I said I found this game as an adult. I think there are a lot of cases where it's being experimental and sometimes people get put off by some of the more crazier things the game tries.
A lot of people are already pointing out the egg carrier example and the example with the pond so I won't but.... yeah. The game is really subtle and if you blink you'll miss it
Super Mario 64 is only 1 or 2 years older than Sonic Adventure's Japanese release
Sonic Heroes is the best 3d sonic game and it's criminal that SEGA hasn't made a new PC port on modern online stores yet, like Steam, GOG, and Epic
I'm actually looking to replay Heroes pretty soon, I remember enjoying it a lot back in the day and I'm looking forward to seeing if it holds up
I've never played the game but I loved the video regardless!
The lighting of the DX version is not bad
This game has, unfortunately, gotten better with age...
God forbid the female hedgehog has a spindash
2:19:00 if you want a good laugh check out Gamma's voice in the Sonic X dub
You should make a video on old website games you played as a kid like addicting games, cool math or poptropica !!!
My hot take is that Sonic Adventure 2 has one of the greatest video game soundtracks of all time.
I also love these shit games (and the occasional nostalgia smoothie).
Sonic Adventure 2's soundtrack is hilarious, because for the most part it's really great but then you just have songs like Death Chamber where Knuckles is just having a weird schizophrenic conversation in his head between him and Sonic.
I honestly feel like the intro was a little misleadingly harsh for how positive-leaning the rest of the retrospective was! The fraction of the game that is Big the Cat aside, I was waiting the whole time for the point where it gets "terrible" as you said at the start, and it never came... Well, glad you had a good time either way.
For me, the "terrible" bits are the jank, the odd level design, the poorly aged cutscenes, the baffling decisions like playing Sky Chase 4 times, and the fact that 2 out of the 6 characters are absolutely boring slogs to play. A lot of this stuff swings back around to being really enjoyable or funny, especially the stilted dialogue and choreography in the cutscenes. Big and Amy's story aside, just about every negative in this game simply makes me laugh right along with it and continue having a great time. I consider these things to be objectively bad design choices at worst and extremely dated products of their time at best, but I still personally enjoy it, hence where the whole "Sonic Adventure is terrible but I love it" thesis comes from.
@@SodaCrab My only thing is that playing with Amy, you can actually move pretty fast with her if you know how to pick up speed to consistently to use the hammer jump (and spamming the hammer jump to me is no different then spamming the spin dash.) just wish her max speed on foot was faster though. Big, however, confusing for first timers and easy as heck, with those who understand the mechanics and know where Froggy is. Luckily, both of the shortest stories, so if someone doesn't like them, you can beat them very quickly. I never understood why they bring the whole game down to basically a bad game to others.
i think the comparison about super mario 64 and sonic adventure is the best way to describe it. they are both incredibly different games with incredibly different priorities so it's not fair to either game and dev team to compare them. that being said, i definitely don't think the sonic adventure series holds up very well, but are charming enough to be mentioned in the history books. super mario 64 is my favorite game of all time for what it was able to accomplish, and i have so many fond memories of it that i can set aside my bias to say that the adventure series does deserve recognition.
fun fact but nintendo's console offering were always the most inferior on the market, so the fact that super mario 64 turned out as well as it did and is a beloved classic just makes the development of the adventure series, and sonic's future games as a whole, somewhat depressing to think about in hindsight. as much as sega deserves a lot of criticism thrown at them for their business practices, i do think the advancements they brought to the video game scene in hindsight need that recognition, so thank you for this video.
I honestly don't think they're all that comparable of games anyways, other than that they were their respective series' "transition to 3D" and that they're the same basic genre. Their priorities were just so different. It really is crazy the kind of voodoo magic Nintendo can pull off on underpowered hardware though, they're still doing that to this day. I can't believe how good Pikmin 4 looks on what is basically a portable xbox 360
I recommend playing these games subbed
I feel like the jank is part of the fun though, the English dub is so quotable
@@SodaCrab I get that but the voice acting is definitely better and a more accurate story (with a retranslated mod)
Played soooooooo much Sonic Adventure 2 as a kid. Many late nights spent in the Chao garden. Years later I went back and played Sonic Adventure 1 and very glad I did, have a ton of nostalgia for that one as well.
These games are rough for sure lol, hot mess by today's standards, but for me they are still the absolute best of the Sonic series.
I do wish they looked and played how I remember them. 😆
I think the messiness is part of the charm. Honestly if they were less messy and the cutscenes went more into the boring 5/10 territory than the silly bad sweetspot they hit now, both Adventure games would probably be a lot less fun to revisit.
I understand the hate for big thou I can take it or leave it especially when you get life belt upgrade cuz levels only min long then. However more I play this game , the more I love it. I understand sound issues being terrible on steam because those never happened to me on GameCube version or PlayStation so hopefully there’s a mod to fix that for you. Sonic levels I’ve gotten so much better in. I skipped pinball using wall glitch but besides that spin jump for the rest. Those ice pillars I spin jump to rock then inside spin jump to almost the jump panels then boom I’m snow boarding. Speed highway has a life hidden one of the building you can spin jump to in the start. Game gets really neat doing all that.
I mean I can see the bad parts of SA2. Requiring emblems from the chao garden for Green Hill Zone was a bad call, most levels were a nightmare to A-rank, some things were frustrating (Mad Space, the Metal Harbour rocket, the car mini game, etc.) and the GameCube port absolutely sucked. But whoever says that SA2 is a bad game, needs to go outside and touch some grass. Even if you restrict yourself to playing the story, it’s a banger of a game. One that doesn’t rely on bad jokes or nostalgia and desperately shoehorned in references to other games, to show the fans that they remember those games, instead of actually using those characters and locations (that are not green hill, chemical plant and sky sanctuary).
I really don't see where this whole idea that the Adventure games suck came from, and I ESPECIALLY don't see the argument for them sucking in the context of their release window. Like yeah, as much as I still like Adventure 1 and especially 2, I can see why people might not like them if they weren't around for them back in the day, but I really don't see where they get the idea that they sucked from the onset. Adventure 1 was a super ambitious game that had a pretty crazy scale for a platformer back in the day, and Adventure 2 is just really solid aside from some of the hiccups you mentioned in your comment. I think maybe it just comes down to some of the questionable modern Sonic games coloring the perception of what came before them.
@@SodaCrab I think so too. I think it’s just some edgy kids who grew up with Colors and Lost World that are sick of people bashing their favourite games and putting SA1 and 2 on a pedestal. I remember, back in the day, people would be the same way about the classic games.
I'm actually on emblem 100 right now trying to unlock green hill for the first time.
26:25 speaking of sound mixing, I'm pretty sure I once heard someone that audio is done differently in the original because the Dreamcast has a unique sound processor. Now, considering the ports for this game on other platforms like the GameCube, PS3, PC, it's safe to say audio mixing here isn't exactly the finest... I think the SA2 ports suffer more of this than SA1 but maybe I'm wrong about this so feel free to correct my dumbass about this

I got my first dreamcast last year and first game I finished was Snic Adventure. Just to compare it to PC port. And to be honest I kinda don't see that giant gap everyone talking about. It's better visually and maybe less janky, but it feels pretty much same to PC version.
Just like you I come to realisation that it's not as good as I always thought, but still it's a big part of me and even with all it's flaws I replay it sometimes.
Oh hell yeah
I mostly loved the hub worlds & it partly saved the game for me.
Sonic both in story & gameplay is the absolute "worst" not countin big. On the other hand Amy was my fav all around & I adore her here. Gamma still has the "best" story & Big has the most "important" story in the game but as a whole Amy comes together "incredibly". I genuinely think puttin in the chao was a mistake that hurts the game more than it helps cus how much of those time/resources could've been used to actually make the game better rather than put a useless side thing that's too big & hurts the pacin(Adv 2 is even worse here). Replayability doesn't work cus of the game is good to most ppl they'll replay it anyways so it' a waste that hurts the game in more than 1 way. that's all I'll say
I gotta disagree with your statement on tails arc after this game tails works alongside sonic instead of following him in sa2 and heroes sonic admits without tails he wouldn’t have been able to beat eggman since he broke him out of jail and made the fake chaos emerald and took down metal overlord
Before I watch the video. I played sonic adventure on thr dream cast. In 1999. When it was released. I swear that that version plays differently from the GameCube version. Like, that port is just a little worse.
I'll be honest. I've played SA:DX on cube dozens of times. It's still shocking to me, how bad the PC port is. I don't have near as many audio issues. Yes it's not perfect, but it's not painful. I feel so bad for anyone's first impression being the steam version for ANY Dreamcast game. 💀💀
I'm serious I have NEVER heard that awful sound 33:45

Playing the steam port vanilla feels blasphemous
I know there are tons of mods out there that fix the game, but if I'm playing it with all sorts of fixes, it doesn't really feel like I'm reviewing the game I was sold, you know? If I ever play through it again for my own enjoyment I'll definitely play with mods though, the community has done some really awesome stuff with this game.
@@SodaCrabMilk it for more kontent with a squeakquel video: "Sonic Adventure: Smooth Transition Edition".

Opinion discarded. Literally plays like shit compared to Dreamcast in so many ways, even containing more collision issues.
Go play Sonic Adventure one day if you don't mind. It's much better than whatever this is.
I don't know how you got that nobody's done anything to make the Egg Carrier crash, when in Sky Deck you personally destroy 2 massive portions of one of the wings...
I never really noticed that, I guess I never put together that you were somehow destroying the Egg Carrier when you were running around on it in that section of Sky Deck. If that's the implication then I guess it makes sense, but they probably could've communicated that better by having you actually destroy some things other than a few cannons to really sell it and make it clear.
