I'm not painting at all right now. My painting desk is next to my work desk in my study, so come 6pm, I want to be anywhere but in there. I've really been struggling with work life balance over these three lock downs, I'm actually looking forward to being able to leave work at the office.
I REALLY like this type of video. It's an awesome narrative on how your process is, how you're making your decisions and to be honest, it's great to hear that someone of your caliber struggles with the same things that we "normal" painters do: finding motivation. Thanks again and keep up the good work!!
Definitely enjoyed the video, the topic was fun, and I love to hear people talking about their hobby, sharing their experiences, specially when they are real and a part of the hobby. I've been painting my skaven army for the past year, and like you, I've been prioritizing the units that you know are the base of the army. For me, specially with skavens, that means hundreds of rats. So far, I've painted over a hundred rats to a decent standard, and I've had a lack of motivation throughout the project at different moments, so it is quite refreshing to hear about your particular case. I've been mixing another projects in between, but now I realized that maybe I should've painted also a bigger unit, a leader, a war machine or something like that, to motivate me again. Anyways, loved the topic, and the shots. I really love how your army looks, so the video has been really fun to watch, apart from listening to it. Cheers, Andy!
Brilliant Andy, it adds to the story, the tutorials then this was a behind the scenes story. You have certainly motivated me. Your army looks amazing. You give us the tutorial to paint the models, trying to replicate your amazing skills and then we can see how there are other challenges to painting other than skill. Really enjoying the channel, thank you.
Such a timely video. I just finished painting 30 deathwing terminators last night. I don't have an airbrush yet, so I had to wet blend them all. I spent almost two months painting them. Now at least I'm treating myself to a single character. Definitely my last army without an airbrush...
Thanks for speaking of the lack of motivation that we sometimes go through, especially in this time where "we've got nothing else to do". Much appreciated.
This was one of my favorite videos you've done. I've had a down month in painting and although I've been struggling with it, I'm pretty happy that even at a low point I've made SOME progress. It's really just a perspective shift, and it's helpful to my motivation.
These are beautiful, been on the fence about lumineth for a while now as my first step from 40k into AOS but you well and truly have convinced me. Will be going back over all your previous lumineth vids for inspiration, this scheme and the execution of painting these models is incredible!
This was a very useful video and is something that isn't talked about enough in the hobby. Its so much easier to *not* do a thing than it is to pick up the brush and paint. Definitely relatable. Thanks for sharing.
Very nice video to motivate people getting back to their armies. I'm struggeling with finishing mit Chaos Warriors as well. Always nice to see your painting progress too Andy.
Great video! Really honest discussion of hobby motivation and one I can relate to. I’m in the exact same situation - painting Lumineth and finding it a real chore. I did a test model of a Warden early Jan and thought - that looks great - but I really didn’t consider how long it would take me to replicate across the whole army! It took me a month to paint 10 Wardens. Painting Eltharion after that really helped with motivation as he was relatively quick to paint - less time than a single warden! I’m currently painting 5 Dawnriders and they’re even worse. But like yourself the Lumineth update has helped with my motivation to complete the army. I’ll watch your progress with interest!
Just found this channel mate after looking for Lumineth info. It's incredible! 😁 Inspirational stuff. I'm a little late to the party on this video but it's been a massive help. Thanks.
Loved this video style, found it super relatable! The more painting I do, the more I realise just doing all the tiny, easy jobs when you're not super motivated is key to getting through an army. Pick those low hanging fruits, build up those easy wins and you will get through it in no time and have fun while at it.
Thanks for the video Andy. It's definitely nice to hear that people like you struggle with motivation too and the insight into how you deal with it was inspiring.
This really hit home with me Andy, i often struggle lately. can see how much time you put into these the paint job is so clean and tidy. Love them. I quite fancy having a go at these dudes myself in a red/ivory scheme.
Been painting Adeptas Sororitas for quite a while now and can definitely feel the many-model-fatigue. Thanks for the motivation. Really helps seeing even pros struggle sometimes. But also seeing that there's always a way out of a slump. Celestine, i'm coming for ya! That being said, once my army is finished its time for some Nighthaunt. Really looking forward to just slap on some paint and dirt and gloomy lights, and not having to be super neat with fleur de lis and bööb trims.
Man, I have to say I stumbled across this video after literally 3 months of hobby bizzkill. Your blends and paint scheme are top notch, this will definitely have to be a labour of love. I’ve just built a whole bunch of drukhari to re-do my old army from 10 years ago and so this video hit right when it was needed. I think everyone is tired of the lockdowns and all that, and we need a bit of inspiration sometimes. Looking forward to seeing this army take shape, it will be award winning when it is all put together! Amazing work.
I have to admit I've been finding myself really struggling to finish. I love the Lumineth models and wouldn't stop on the army but there are days where my drive to finish just isn't there. Seeing all the really cool paint jobs like yours really do help to motivate me to finish them so i can show off the current army and be proud
Love the video and the take on how you found some ways to get past the hobby blocks. Can't wait to see the giant cow and the kangaroo cav. Fingers crossed on those spearmen being done eventually.
I just want to say thank you for making this video. I have been struggling a lot to paint anything. I have been buying kits hoping it would motivate me but it hasn't. I don't know what is going on with me but I can't get anything done. Watching this and reading the comments made me see that I'm not alone and it isn't the hobby dying for me as I feared. It is having my outside responsibilities taking place in my home that demotivates me once I earn freetime. My home isn't my place where I relax anymore and it appears to me crushing my hobby painting.
Great video, I like these ‘inner monologue’ style videos, and the models look amazing! I really like the white/purple blend I’ve done similar with my Cities of Sigmar list I’m building, I’m painting one unit at a time and looking at it in isolation. Last week I put the various units I had together, and yeh, I love that moment of “this works” and it gives you extra motivation.
Really interesting video Andy. Always interesting to hear from other peoples point of view with regards to painting a whole army. In some ways, I can relate to some of the points that you raised in the video about losing momentum. I started off really enthusiastic at the beginning of lockdown to get my Tzeentch army all painted ready for when things got back to normal. Got everything I needed at the time built and primed and had started working on the battleline units but then things started dragging on and on and in the end, I don't think I ended up painting anything for about 6 months! It's only been recently that I have started to paint again with a focus on finishing my battleline. That little push has been enough to keep me motivated just seeing the painted portion of the army grow. I do however need to paint something different after painting 40 blue horrors! More batch painting will sap any motivation I currently have. Might do what you did and reward myself with a character by starting on a Lord of Change just as a little pallet cleanser before continuing.
Great video, I have really struggled during lockdown to stay focused and on target with my projects. Events are a massive source of inspiration and the deadline forces me to sit down and get it done - I am mostly an army painter, usually to a solid table top standard with some corners cut (like your brown gloves on the Bladelords) - This is really common for me, going back later to "upscale" is a lot easier because it doesn't feel like a massive undertaking, it lifts the scheme and maybe already had more motivation from playing/comments on reveals. These are amazing btw - Lumineth are challenging models, I have just started a personal LRL project with the aim to do them quickly but well - aim is to try and de-mystify them for people who are intimidated by painting these minis. I really like the approach in this video Andy - Motivation is so important and is a massive problem in my hobby. When people only see videos of a wonderful finished project or slick edited tutorial videos it makes it look easy which although inspiring its important to hear about the journey of box to table in a real way - I get overwhelmed a lot and beat myself up a lot when I feel like I'm letting myself down and its easy to move to the new exciting thing rather than putting in the effort. I think it's really important to discuss the process you went through openly and how you motivated yourself through a bump in the road rather than giving up - It did make me chuckle when you said "I was naughty and painted a character" - but this looks like it was the best way to kickstart the "grind" of the Rhinox hide! Anyway fantastic video - would love more of these. I am planning on documenting my progress too - mine wont be anywhere as nice as yours though!
Hey, just wanted to say how much I enjoyed this video and your videos in general. I always feel less like an imposter when someone says that they made a mistake or didn’t find something fun to paint! Thankfully the extent of my Lumineth collection is the Underworlds warband. I’m feeling more confident about painting them after watching your videos.
Great video Andy. I 100% relate to this and have struggled with my armies over the years and you are right and some really nice tips about flex and approach. Be great to cover this concept around armies and painting lots of miniatures as opposed to 1 excellent one. But to a higher standard. Great job.
Motivation comes in waves and it helped me to lean into that feeling. Once I accepted that it's okay not to work on models today, or this week because the next wave would come, that lift of pressure helped me to focus on projects, finish things and approach painting happy, instead of filled with dread. Lumineth are looking fantastic. I can't wait to see a board of them.
Thank you so much for this video... I have been struggling with the stress of painting others commission models, and had neglected my own collection for about 3 years now.
fantastic painting and video, I don't do Realm Lords figures but this video has me thinking abt trying this set not for gaming just for my own cabinet. I can also relate to your thoughts on the painting process
Very happy to see you continue with them. Your army looks so beautiful! They’ll look so awesome when all comes together. I started painting after a very long hiatus with the Lumineth again, and for me the toughest part were the Dawnriders. But, similar to you, whenever I put them together, the Lumineth models are just so nice (even with my very modest skills) which kept me going.
Best painted army(so far)! Keep up the good work man! I get needing to take a break from Lumineth though. I can smash out a unit or two and then I have to cleanse my pallets with some Sylvaneth or Orruks before tackling another Lumineth unit
I have the same issues with motivation, it comes in spates for sure. With work and kids balance I get at best 2 hrs a few days a week to paint/do hobby stuff. I don't have a permanent set up either so have to get the gear out, set the light up etc etc. Setting up is the hardest challenge to overcome! Tremendous minis mate, truly gorgeous
To be franck, I think everybody hates paiting troops. It's fun when you try to get the right colour scheme one a couple minis. You spend five hours doing just that, and then you realize you've got nine or nineteen other dudes to do and it just kills any motivation. I now only ever paint squad of up to five models (including squad leader, which I treat as a pseudo-character). Then I do a character, or paint minis from another army/range. It's slow, but it keeps me going. That being said, I can only dream of painting anything like your Lumineth. They're absolutely incredible.
I love any Cult of Paint content, and it helps people to see that even the top tier painters struggle. Me and a friend were talking about feeling the pressure of a backlog, and how it forces us to paint even when we should be doing other things. So my question, have you or others ever painted without a backlog and how do you think it would change things? I bet it would be freeing
Great video. I did massive lumineth commission for a gaming buddy and the trim etc was soul destroying. Toughest commission I've done from a mental toughness perspective. I found the best way was to really compartmentalise and just focus on one unit and task at a time and not think about how much more there was to go!
Take it from me, the metallic trim on all the Lumineth is an oppressive hump, regardless of motivation. Yours are superb so far! Maybe next year, we could meet up at Warhammer world and compare notes? Keep up the good work Andy, you're smashing it.
Love this type of content. An excellent complement to the tutorials on the patreon. You could probably completely half ass the video editing for the future, as almost all the appeal is in the audio
I've been finding lumineth army a big struggle to paint as well - my biggest tip to anyone getting into this army would be NOT to do the armor trim a different color. There are plenty of designs with the entire armor piece + trim once color and it still looks great, so limiting the trim painting will save so much time and sanity!
Awesome video I’ve managed to get through a lot of necrons since last summer & now I’m doing my own lumineth. A lot more challenging from a painting aspect but really enjoying it. I went for a yemetrica colour scheme, slightly differently to yours & no where near your standards. I can relate to all the armour trims & building up to white armour as I haven’t got an airbrush. Results are worth it but it takes a lot of effort & patience. I’ll keep practicing & maybe one day I’ll get a little closer to your high standards, great job by the way 👏🏻
Good lord, I can't imagine trying to batch paint 20 Wardens in one go - I've been doing them 3 at a time, and even that's mentally draining! It really helped for me to stop after a unit and do some other stuff (heroes, Dawnriders, Sentinels, etc.) to cleanse my palate. The second unit has felt so much easier and more enjoyable now that I'm doing them with fresh eyes (and honestly, everything feels easy after dealing with all the trim on those Dawnriders...). I'll probably end up with at least 30 Wardens in the end, but I'm definitely gonna pause and do the Lord-Regent and some other units before I tackle the last 10.
This is reminding me of 7 (or more) years ago painting the old high elves and going through peaks and troughs. I personally think its something about the large amounts of white in the colour scheme and the layering required. I was young and wasn't used to painting more than one layer over my primer, my navy blue and brown dwarves were very easy to paint. Due to that extra effect I now think of those elves as my best painted models, even though they are spearmen. Also the swordsmen were half as difficult to paint back then!
When it comes to army painting, the KISS principle reigns supreme. I too am painting Lumineth. I've gone for a simple scheme for the phalanx and archers of blue robes (shaded with purple all airbrushed) blue/silver scales and gold plate armour. No lining edges with gold, which cuts down the painting time. I will be using your scheme from the tutorials, but on elite units and characters to get them to stand out.
I'm avoiding the brown stage on my Lumineth. I paint the trim with Canoptek Alloy and then pin wash the recesses with a heavily dilluted aggrax earthshade. It's quick, equally effective, and makes painting them much more enjoyable.
Such a good video, very interesting to see your painting proces in details, your humanity trough the hard moments. Very inspiring, I'd like see more ! P.S. your Lumineth looks just great 👍
Very nice of you to share these insights Andy, it's motivating to know that even the OG cultists struggle like this 😅. BTW, I think every project has an equivalent to the 'rhinox hide' stage... Mine do in any case 😀
Thats a really cool video. I have always painted single or a very small number of figures. I will use this as motivation to work up to larger forces. Which intimidate me just in numbers. Trying to get my head around 20 spearmen is still terrifying.
I am progressing in my hobby a lot more now, because I work from home during lockdown and in "those spare moment waiting for the computer" I can paint somethign quick, or assemble something or glue something on the base and let it dry. Btw, very interesting video. More of this type would be interesting to watch. Also, those cloaks are amazing! A video on how to paint just the cloaks would be awesome :)
Thanks for talking about this "lack of motivation " I hit the same wall when working on the dawnriders and have been struggling since to get my flow back (currently just working on different models to get my mojo back)..
Great video, I've been trying out your scheme and having similar troubles - i like to paint according to plan. I decided to step away and paint something quick and easy to get my mojo back, now seeing your vid I'm really psyched to get back to lumineth!
I know... pretty much exactly how you feel. I went and looked back over the partial work I had done for my Dark Angels and simply hated the way the paint job looked... So I went and bought a jug of Super Clean, several metal serving dishes to use as containers to put the minis in as the paint basically gets washed away... as well as a grey primer, then I got a black and white set so I could try doing the Zenithal highlight technique on my Space Marines. As it stands, I have a start collecting box for Tau, Seraphon and Slaves to Darkness that are still in-box and waiting for me to finally finish with my space marines.
Great series! Would be great to see similar content from rest of CoP guys! I have to stand behind what you said: lockdown kills drive to finish an army. I'm slow painter already, but when I don't have game scheduled I paint even slowe. Usually I get most fun when painting single mini. Small or large. When doing batch painting I usually go with too large batch (10/15/20) minis and get burned out. Golden middle for me is 5 minis. Small enough to see progress, large enough to not spend to much time on single mini at a time.
Getting an army done is tough mentally, you have to play those mind games as you said. I just added 60 conscripts to my Guard army, and to get through that slog, I "treated" myself to a Command squad +Taurox and an Inquisitor to break the monotony. Plus if I'm doing a big batch, I sometimes paint up 3-5 fully and sit them on the shelf in front of me so I can see the end result.
Great video! I love the inspiration you give you by being this open about everything, and I concur with taking a break to paint something else after doing so many of one army. Also #HammerCow
The way you pushed through basing the brown, i felt the same way when freehanding 21 phase 2 clone troopers with the 501st markings. It was awful but worth it in the end!
There seems to be a lot of hating on this army. Each to his own. I just wish some of those haters can take a look at what you have done with this already beautiful army. Absolutely stunning. Cannot wait to see your take on the Hurakan Windmage and cavalry models. Thank you for the inspiration and reminder that persistence is key when it comes to our hobby. Cheers.
Great video. It’s interesting that you didn’t discuss how difficult things like High Elves and Harlequins are to paint because you have to be so clean with everything, and you’re working with large areas of white. I would think you’ve chosen the hardest army in all of 40K/AoS to paint!
Me when i started my first lumineth unit. >Painting these elves is EZ >spends 45mins on just doing the gold trim basecoat of all armour I liked painting the old elves more. But yeah the trim is also one of the most time consuming and boring things so certainly agree on that part.
Painters block totally understand I'm in the same space at the moment really struggling to paint anything but I cant stop building more and more which when I stop to look at them, its even harder to pick up a brush and round and round it goes, sorry to rant on but I feel your pain m8ty.
Absolutely love the paint scheme. Makes me wanna go all in on lumineth.. (havent cause i paint slow as hell and never finish armies -.- so trying to stick with my slaves to Darkness)
That's insane work my friend, your thoughts about the lockdown are worth thinking too. I'm an artist and this situation has drained my passion and energy but miniature painting is there for me and i find it relaxing to have this for these long hours locked inside. The trick is to keep it a hobby, avoid to fix deadlines or objectives and just let the fun guide me (my 14 finished sequitors look at me with pride while the 15th of them is still crying alone in a corner out of shame). Anyway i love your bases and i would love to get some grass like you did, do you have a link to the specific product you use? Thanks a lot for your job though, your army is excellent and it gave me inspiration to start a lumineth army myself! keep upu the great work!
Andy mate, you sounded mega down in parts of the video. Keep it up mate you will have the best looking AoS army going and all that brown will be worth it!
CoP the cavalry are really time-consuming with s many fiddly bits around the daddle rider area. Your lord regent approach would have saved me so much time. I might try the "block in brown" with my spearmens' shields and armour
Loving this type of video Andy! Sweet to hear the inside scoop on your own personal projects, looking forward to the next one!
I'm not painting at all right now. My painting desk is next to my work desk in my study, so come 6pm, I want to be anywhere but in there. I've really been struggling with work life balance over these three lock downs, I'm actually looking forward to being able to leave work at the office.
I'm in the same situation and it's such a bummer.

These are probably my most favorite painted models ever, great job man

I thought the hammer cows were elf sized until you plonked him down on the table...
Brilliant scheme and thanks for the tips
Would love to see any progress in that army your paint sceme is just awesome
Fantastic vid Andy🍻 Love hearing more about your proses. Totally relatable
Andy you're such a champion! Keep on with the hard work. It will be worth it - your army looks amazing! Thank you for sharing!

This was a great video and awesome to hear from someone who paints at such a higher level still gets the same doubts!
The bases make so much of a change.
Good insigths, thank you for sharing with us! I definetly can relate to your situation with base coating.

I am having basically this exact same experience with my lumineth, glad I'm not alone on this!
I can barely get through building the damn things lol but honestly seeing your painted Elves motivates me to get mine done because they look awesome.
amazing work cant wait to see the whole army painted
Massive fan of this video man! Love to see this and it’s super motivating, will defo be having this playing when I’m painting!
Thank you so much for this video... I have been struggling with the stress of painting others commission models, and had neglected my own collection for about 3 years now.
You actually made me dive into my Syar army again...the trim is definitely made it tedious, thank you so much for inspiring me.
fantastic painting and video, I don't do Realm Lords figures but this video has me thinking abt trying this set not for gaming just for my own cabinet.
Great video. Really motivating especially I find this hard as well.
This scheme is just great. It's close to the studio paint job, but just better with the purple to blue to yellow white.
Wow. Fantastic!! So much inspiration!
1-2 a day of these guys was about all I could handle too. Took me about a month but finally through the starter box!
P.S. your Lumineth looks just great 👍
Beautiful minis and I really enjoyed this video. Not really seen anything like this before and I watch alot of gw content!
Very nice of you to share these insights Andy, it's motivating to know that even the OG cultists struggle like this 😅. BTW, I think every project has an equivalent to the 'rhinox hide' stage... Mine do in any case 😀
You should be proud of your work, because is awesome :D Hope to see more of them on instagram
Thats a really cool video. I have always painted single or a very small number of figures. I will use this as motivation to work up to larger forces. Which intimidate me just in numbers. Trying to get my head around 20 spearmen is still terrifying.
Really enjoyed the insights into how you overcome getting mired in the rank and file.
I just need to convince GW to send me some characters!! :D
Small enough to see progress, large enough to not spend to much time on single mini at a time.
this looks awesome, great work
Getting an army done is tough mentally, you have to play those mind games as you said.
Your Ultramarine army is fire Andy!
Cheers.
I want to see a Lumineth video ever week ;P Serious though, great video.. I am experiencing the exact same issue as you. The spearmen are killing me.
Wowser! Just amazing!
Great video. It’s interesting that you didn’t discuss how difficult things like High Elves and Harlequins are to paint because you have to be so clean with everything, and you’re working with large areas of white. I would think you’ve chosen the hardest army in all of 40K/AoS to paint!
Damn, my first army was high elves in the mid 90s.
This makes me want to collect them again.
I'd love to see your take on the flying fox :3
Love this kind of video! There are plenty of tutorials to go around and less of these "how to deal with motivational issues" kinds of video's.
Me when i started my first lumineth unit.
>Painting these elves is EZ
>spends 45mins on just doing the gold trim basecoat of all armour
I liked painting the old elves more. But yeah the trim is also one of the most time consuming and boring things so certainly agree on that part.
stunning
Painters block totally understand I'm in the same space at the moment really struggling to paint anything but I cant stop building more and more which when I stop to look at them, its even harder to pick up a brush and round and round it goes, sorry to rant on but I feel your pain m8ty.
Hallway through my wave 1 Vanari. I will probably be doing this for the next two years
Am Patreon member, would be happy with Lumineth every week haha
For that Rhinox trim, I’m just going to use one of the contrast browns for that. It’ll make it less tedious for me.
CoP the cavalry are really time-consuming with s many fiddly bits around the daddle rider area. Your lord regent approach would have saved me so much time. I might try the "block in brown" with my spearmens' shields and armour
I enjoyed the video, thanks.
