This is one of the BEST track plans I've seen in quite a while! I would love to see this set in the 30's to 50's, with Fort Ord incorporated into it, but even so, this will make a great modern layout. The only problem is that there are no more canneries on Cannery Row. Those disappeared even before the railroad did.
Still, I LOVE this layout! Wish I had the time and money to build this myself.

Hi Ron, to be more specific, the entire railroad is almost non existing now a days! I believe there are plans to bring it back as a form of lite transport.
We are stretching the limits of proto freelancing. But I believe it will make a great and realistic layout. This size layout really lends itself for 80ft boxcars and consists one finds on branch lines. A modern train with 30 cars won't fit. One could reduce the industry count on cannery row as it could have been. Adding a few empty foundations. This would symbolize the deterioration of rail traffic and rail served industries. At the cost of less switching of course.

Cool layout! That would have been a fun line to work with beach views like that!

I didn't think of that. That whole area is beautiful.

Cool video. Awesome to see the old photos of my home town.
Just a few things.. You are saying Canary Row.
    Its Cannery Row.
    And Pacific Grove...
Reading is hard I'm guessing? 😂

Good to hear you like it 👍🏻

Now that's the train room you should be building! Holy cow! You really filled it up nicely, too.
I leveled the layout. What a chore. I tested with a free rolling boxcar and a section of flex track, after using a 4' level to get as close as possible.
BTW, did you know the height of Peco 83 track from bottom of ties to top of rail is 5/32"? Never know when you might need that! LOL

It was quite the design and quite the space! There was no space in the video for variants and details. A layout design is in most cases a journey of finding out what you really want. That will drive the compression and compromises. To my surprise we could spacuously fit in the majority of the branch line. Largely due to the space that just worked.
I am thinking to borrow a lazer level for my next layout. It is around the wall. So any slight angle will come back to bite me in the ...... swing gate!

Very cool. Where did you find the maps with the tracks shown on them?

      Hi Travis,
The tracks drawn on google earth are home made. I did it a few times for other projects. Its a lot of fun to do as it is a summery of your research. And there we got the second prong: research. Google, books & magazines.
I put the big map and usefull links on Patreon.

Hi Dubai!!! I really enjoy how you plan out your layouts... I really need your help. I'm trying to put together an apartment layout in the shape of a square C the three boards will be 3 ft by 63 inches which will showcase the ATSF in 1950's from the Chicago Dearborn station to Topeka Kansas, and lastly to San Bernardino California passenger station and yard. The problem is finding the industries that the trains would service and understanding how to place the tracks to make everything flow? How do you figure out where you want to put stuff and does it make sense? Then I'm in an apartment so I'm trying to make modules and wire them together so I will be able to put them back in my closet standing up so what should I add and not add with it being a mobile layout?

Hi Jeff, that sounds like a fun project! If you can send me an email, the we can get the design process started. My email is in the 'about' section of this channel.
Chicago - San bernardino will mean a lot of fruit!

Go to the dubai trains channel. Then there is a row of tabs listing home, video, short, playlist etc. And the last one is about.

Did the real trains go as far south as Los Angeles? In Sept.of 1985 the Army at Fort Ord unloaded a bunch of military equipment off flatcars parked on the 8th st bridge. Probably the last time those tracks, near the army base were used.

No the railroad stopped at the lumber yard and sand pit. I read there are all kinds of plans to reopen the line for passengers but i don't know the status of that.
