The Nolan trilogy certainly drops a lot of red pills when you consider all the female characters and what they do to Batman 1) Batman risks his life every day to make Gotham safe: Rachel dumps him for Dent, despite knowing that without Batman there would be no Dent to begin with. All the progress that Gotham made in getting its new DA was entirely Batmans work. 2) Catwoman: Betrays Batman to Bane despite knowing that Batman is the only person who could save Gotham 3) Talia/Miranda: Wins Batmans trust only to betray his organisations technology and secrets to Bane
Looking back at this scene after The Dark Knight Rises makes this scene twice as powerful. You can see the pain on Bruce’s face after Rachel tells him that the man she loved was no longer there and she only sees Batman, knowing that his second life as a vigilante will keep them apart, and Bruce doesn’t want her to say that but deep down knows it’s true. And she said that maybe someday that Gotham will no longer need Batman they could be together, It’s epic that they’re actually foreshadowing that there will eventually be an end to Christian bale’s Batman. And in The Dark Knight Rachel thinks that Bruce can not let go of being Batman, but in the TDKR you see Bruce passing on the torch of Batman, entering a relationship with Selina, ultimately proving Rachel wrong. Man this trilogy is superb
I fully agree, and glad to see some rationality in the comments. Bruce could also mentor John Blake after the events of TDKR, so he was able to make the compromise with rebuilding his life but still ensuring Gotham's future.

I personally liked this Rachel more. I felt like she fit her character more the the one from TDK. The one seemed more unique to me. The other girl gave her a plain Jane kinda vide. So I honestly wasn't sad when she died. I might have been more if this Rachel was in TDK.
watching this video sends chills down my spine. knowing that rachel would die in the sequel and her leading bruce to believe in a future that would never happen connects to so many of us in our pursuit of our dreams. watching this trilogy makes me believe in staying strong despite shattered dreams. this may be a fictional movie but the grasp of reality is very strong.

I prefered Katie as Rachel, I think she was more believable and she and Christian had really nice chemistry. It worked really well in the movie. I was disappointed when she didn't want to make the 2nd movie and they cast Maggie instead.
And at the end, after Banes revolution is stopped, Bruce is finally the man Rachel was waiting for. Making Batman an icon stripped Bruce Wayne to the core but he managed to protect Gotham eternally. Now, Bruce Wayne can live the rest of his life knowing that his parents' dreams have been realized. Hands down, the best trilogy of all time

Katie seemed like the sweet girl from his childhood who did love him. They had chemistry so it was so believable. That was all the acting I needed. To believe in their relationship. His carefree, billionaire persona is merely a facade - his edgy personality/lust for justice was more prevalent before he decided to become a symbol and conceal his dual identity.
I just don't understand this woman. Bruce matured a lot along the years he was abroad, and he returned as a completely new man, a far better one, in all senses... So she's very proud of him, yet she no longer loves him because of the same reasons that make her be proud of him? Jeez, poor Bruce. He's the very definition of self-sacrifice. Quite admirable.
That's what she told Batman in the scene where she leads him to Bane, but traps him behind the gate. And Batman replies, "You made a serious mistake." To which Bane then says "Not as serious as yours, I fear."
I think what she's ultimately saying is she's proud of him, but sees that he has taken on something she doesn't exactly want to follow; Bruce's 'true face' as Batman. He may be a better man but he is also a very different man now; his persona will consume him. So she'll wait for when Bruce can finally let go of his obsession with vengeance, and simply be 'Bruce'. Honestly this is one of my favorite scenes, great dialogue, fantastic music except...Katie's acting really almost ruins it. Sigh.
People get mad at Rachel for flip flopping when it comes to Bruce, but it made sense to me. He may be a great person saving lives as Batman, but that also means he’s hardened and not the sweet person he once was. If only she was alive when he retired.

Being the last Wayne and accepting the obligation to live up to his family's legacy (including trying to save Gotham when necessary - even at great personal cost) - coupled with the rage and guilt behind his parents' murder makes the character of Bruce Wayne TRULY "Burdened with Glorious Purpose"...if I can mix two cinematic universes.
it's neat how the "batman sound" 3:08 evolved over the course of the trilogy, you hear it in the dark knight, and the dark knight rises, but it gets deeper.
It's almost every hero's dilemma, but personally I think they need heroines who understand their jobs and support them either emotionally or physically (or both). But that's rarely the case..
No. He would have pieced the job out among several different companies. Much like he and Alfred purchased the parts for his cowl and the ears in large numbers etc. from different companies and put the parts together themselves. Remember, his whole persona is eccentric, ultra rich, playboy who buys things on a whim just because he can. He could have told contractors he was building anything, the ultimate man cave, an underground panic room, an underground garage for his cars...anything. Alfred and Bruce would not have let anyone see anything telling. Now the people assisting Fox in applied sciences that are running diagnostics on the Bat at the end of TDKR...that's who I'm thinking should have had a clue. But maybe they were led to believe that Wayne Enterprises was just providing Batman's tech never dreaming that their "Trust Funded " boss WAS Batman. I don't like to think about it too much. Takes away some of the enjoyment.
One of the most noticeable weaknesses in TDK (overall, a rather great film) is the broken continuity with the Rachel Dawes character. Watching this scene after many years, I noticed a) the chemistry between Rachel and Bruce is very evident; b) Katie is substantially less talented than Christian. The gulf is extraordinarily obvious in this scene, where every muscle, breath, and vocalization by Christian is intentionally controlled to convey a rich array of emotions. He doesn't even need to speak. Katie on the other hand, already sophomoric in general, and fairs even worse by comparison. I wonder if there's more to the story behind the reasons she wasn't in TDK. However- the chemistry between the two is undeniable. It's unfortunate she lacked the talent to go toe to toe with Christian, and I do think she would have made TDK weaker overall (despite my misgivings about the continuity issue). Maggie is a superior actress but I too felt the chemistry was missing between her and Christian, nothing like this. I see comments that Emily Blunt or Rachel McAdams were considered for the part, what a shame neither of them got it- but maybe it was chemistry problem. Enjoy Christian Bale but he seems tough for leading ladies to "vibe" with.
Absolutely agree with your take on Christian's ability to convey all of those emotions in that scene. There are so many. You believe he absolutely adores her but he's hesitant. She initiates the kiss in the scene. When she says she won't be with him yeah you see the emotion there too. Katie is out of her league yes. I also believe she was REAL LIFE attracted to Christian LOL. I know she was married to Tom Cruise back then but Christian Bale was - well let's just say I don't think she thought shooting that kiss was the worst day she'd ever had at work LOLLOL. And as for Christian, as you said, he is a really good actor so held up his part of the chemistry. Since Chemistry can only happen when it's a mutual thing, yeah I guess one can see some chemistry here in this scene. As far as less chemistry between Christian and Maggie in comparison, I always considered the context. I feel like they are comfortable with each other. I bought that. I could also see Christian's longing for Rachel and him forcing himself to accept that for the time being she was sleeping with another man. No matter how much a man loves a woman that's gotta hurt the chemistry and everything else for a man to know the woman he loves is sleeping with another man. And Rachel has obviously placed herself in a position to be in love with two men partly because she feels the first man (Bruce) is not in love with her ENOUGH to stop being Batman. Sooooo I think that both Christian and Maggie get the tone just right. They are not all chem'ed up so to speak because their relationship was strained to say the least. I think it was probably a conscious decision for those two actors to lean into the awkwardness and disconnection and uncertainty of where their relationship was at that point of the timeline of their journey. I don't think you can just compare the actresses - I think you have to consider the context. Maggie really does play Rachel as if the character is really pretty much "over" Bruce and is done waiting for him and when she says "if Batman turns himself in they'll never let us be together" and then Bruce doesn't turn himself in and lets Harvey put a target on his own back that's the final straw and it gives Rachel the excuse she's looking for to break it off completely with Bruce. As far as Bale being a tough romantic lead, I'll give you that. However, there is a scene that is absolutely breathtaking between him and Zoe Saldana in Out of the Furnace. Don't know if you've ever seen it but he does really good work in that movie. Christian and Zoe don't share much screen time but they make the most out of their scenes together. You can TH-cam for the scenes that they are together in that one. I also thought there was chemistry between Bale and Hatheway in TDKR. Again, they didn't have a lot of scenes together but I thought she was the best pairing with him of all three movies. If I'm going strictly superficial, Katie seemed too young, Maggie seemed to old but Anne felt and looked just the right age - and again superficially they were an attractive couple. I thought Anne did a good job acting as well. I enjoyed your point of view. Also some believable chemistry between Christian and an actress in Laurel Canyon. The car scene is unbelievable and the tension between the two characters is well played and very believable especially in the context of where Bale's character is coming from in the movie. Cheers!

Up until this scene it's true, you do not get a sense that they were ever "in love" or a couple. Rachel says "the man I loved never came back at all". Okay. They were kids and grew up together. Their friendship is real, they have history and he knows she's there for HIM not his money. I get it. But apparently, they both go to college - he to Princeton and she somewhere else. Bruce is asked to leave Princeton and not to come back and he comes back home anyway for Chill's trial. At that point, he's what 21 or 22? As is Rachel who is somehow already working for the DA's office. I guess she was at the top of her class. Okay we'll let that go for now. Anyway, perhaps they have been having a long distance relationship while they are at different colleges? But very shortly after Bruce gets kicked out of Princeton, Chill gets killed and Bruce leaves Gotham for seven years! When he gets back, he checks in on Rachel and thinks she's seeing someone because she kisses some guy on the cheek. Rachel then sees Bruce for the first time when he's leaving the hotel/restaurant that he ends up buying (Bruce Wayne eccentric Billionaire) where she basically disses him for not being involved in the struggle to save Gotham from corruption. She of all people apparently believes the mask he is wearing until he reveals he's Batman. My question is, when exactly did they have time to establish a fully adult romantic relationship based on the people they grew into over the seven years Bruce was gone? If they were each others' first loves then yeah sometimes that can be the spark needed to reignite something after a long absence but I don't know. It just doesn't flow for me. I think Bruce idealized the whole concept of them being together. If not Rachel, who could he really trust as he did her. Makes it sadder because had they given it a shot, they probably would have discovered that they were different people than they were growing up and maybe not meant for each other. And Bruce wouldn't have stayed stuck for eight years in emotional prison out of loyalty to Rachel. Still gotta put the blame squarely on Alfred for those eight years though.

Actually, I think the "calm" music was composed by James Newton Howard, and they may have decided together (with the director and others) when to bring the epic music back in.

Finally someone agrees with me! Ahaha. In my opinion all I cared about as far is Rachel is concerned is her nailing the relationship with Bruce. Katie seemed like the sweet girl from his childhood who did love him. They had chemistry so it was so believable. That was all the acting I needed. To believe in their relationship. In my eyes that was the whole purpose of Rachel in the movie and so I think Katie did well. :)

I kind of hate Rachel. She goes on and on the whole movie about how Bruce’s actions are what matter to her, then she finds out what he’s doing and is like “well I see your doing good, but it’s not how I wanted you to do good so we can’t be together.”

Even if ppl wanna say Maggie was the better actor than Katie, to put it simply, Katie’s version cared for Bruce so much more while Maggie’s mainly loved Harvey more than Bruce. That’s why we like Katie’s version more for Bruce. But at least he gets Selena in dark knight rises.

I just don't understand this woman. Bruce matured a lot along the years he was abroad, and he returned as a completely new man, a far better one, in all senses... So she's very proud of him, yet she no longer loves him because of the same reasons that make her be proud of him?

Maggie Gyllenhaal is better as an actress. But Katie made better impression as Rachel.
I think what she's ultimately saying is she's proud of him, but sees that he has taken on something she doesn't exactly want to follow; Bruce's 'true face' as Batman. He may be a better man but he is also a very different man now; his persona will consume him. So she'll wait for when Bruce can finally let go of his obsession with vengeance, and simply be 'Bruce'.
Honestly this is one of my favorite scenes, great dialogue, fantastic music except...Katie's acting really almost ruins it. Sigh.
People get mad at Rachel for flip flopping when it comes to Bruce, but it made sense to me. He may be a great person saving lives as Batman, but that also means he’s hardened and not the sweet person he once was. If only she was alive when he retired.

Being the last Wayne and accepting the obligation to live up to his family's legacy (including trying to save Gotham when necessary - even at great personal cost) - coupled with the rage and guilt behind his parents' murder makes the character of Bruce Wayne TRULY "Burdened with Glorious Purpose"...if I can mix two cinematic universes.
it's neat how the "batman sound" 3:08 evolved over the course of the trilogy, you hear it in the dark knight, and the dark knight rises, but it gets deeper.

No. He would have pieced the job out among several different companies. Much like he and Alfred purchased the parts for his cowl and the ears in large numbers etc. from different companies and put the parts together themselves. Remember, his whole persona is eccentric, ultra rich, playboy who buys things on a whim just because he can. He could have told contractors he was building anything, the ultimate man cave, an underground panic room, an underground garage for his cars...anything. Alfred and Bruce would not have let anyone see anything telling. Now the people assisting Fox in applied sciences that are running diagnostics on the Bat at the end of TDKR...that's who I'm thinking should have had a clue. But maybe they were led to believe that Wayne Enterprises was just providing Batman's tech never dreaming that their "Trust Funded " boss WAS Batman. I don't like to think about it too much. Takes away some of the enjoyment.

The rachel in The Dark Knight looks 50 years old
One of the most noticeable weaknesses in TDK (overall, a rather great film) is the broken continuity with the Rachel Dawes character. Watching this scene after many years, I noticed a) the chemistry between Rachel and Bruce is very evident; b) Katie is substantially less talented than Christian. The gulf is extraordinarily obvious in this scene, where every muscle, breath, and vocalization by Christian is intentionally controlled to convey a rich array of emotions. He doesn't even need to speak. Katie on the other hand, already sophomoric in general, and fairs even worse by comparison. I wonder if there's more to the story behind the reasons she wasn't in TDK. However- the chemistry between the two is undeniable. It's unfortunate she lacked the talent to go toe to toe with Christian, and I do think she would have made TDK weaker overall (despite my misgivings about the continuity issue). Maggie is a superior actress but I too felt the chemistry was missing between her and Christian, nothing like this. I see comments that Emily Blunt or Rachel McAdams were considered for the part, what a shame neither of them got it- but maybe it was chemistry problem. Enjoy Christian Bale but he seems tough for leading ladies to "vibe" with.
Absolutely agree with your take on Christian's ability to convey all of those emotions in that scene. There are so many. You believe he absolutely adores her but he's hesitant. She initiates the kiss in the scene. When she says she won't be with him yeah you see the emotion there too. Katie is out of her league yes. I also believe she was REAL LIFE attracted to Christian LOL. I know she was married to Tom Cruise back then but Christian Bale was - well let's just say I don't think she thought shooting that kiss was the worst day she'd ever had at work LOLLOL. And as for Christian, as you said, he is a really good actor so held up his part of the chemistry. Since Chemistry can only happen when it's a mutual thing, yeah I guess one can see some chemistry here in this scene. As far as less chemistry between Christian and Maggie in comparison, I always considered the context. I feel like they are comfortable with each other. I bought that. I could also see Christian's longing for Rachel and him forcing himself to accept that for the time being she was sleeping with another man. No matter how much a man loves a woman that's gotta hurt the chemistry and everything else for a man to know the woman he loves is sleeping with another man. And Rachel has obviously placed herself in a position to be in love with two men partly because she feels the first man (Bruce) is not in love with her ENOUGH to stop being Batman. Sooooo I think that both Christian and Maggie get the tone just right. They are not all chem'ed up so to speak because their relationship was strained to say the least. I think it was probably a conscious decision for those two actors to lean into the awkwardness and disconnection and uncertainty of where their relationship was at that point of the timeline of their journey. I don't think you can just compare the actresses - I think you have to consider the context. Maggie really does play Rachel as if the character is really pretty much "over" Bruce and is done waiting for him and when she says "if Batman turns himself in they'll never let us be together" and then Bruce doesn't turn himself in and lets Harvey put a target on his own back that's the final straw and it gives Rachel the excuse she's looking for to break it off completely with Bruce. As far as Bale being a tough romantic lead, I'll give you that. However, there is a scene that is absolutely breathtaking between him and Zoe Saldana in Out of the Furnace. Don't know if you've ever seen it but he does really good work in that movie. Christian and Zoe don't share much screen time but they make the most out of their scenes together. You can TH-cam for the scenes that they are together in that one. I also thought there was chemistry between Bale and Hatheway in TDKR. Again, they didn't have a lot of scenes together but I thought she was the best pairing with him of all three movies. If I'm going strictly superficial, Katie seemed too young, Maggie seemed to old but Anne felt and looked just the right age - and again superficially they were an attractive couple. I thought Anne did a good job acting as well. I enjoyed your point of view. Also some believable chemistry between Christian and an actress in Laurel Canyon. The car scene is unbelievable and the tension between the two characters is well played and very believable especially in the context of where Bale's character is coming from in the movie. Cheers!

Up until this scene it's true, you do not get a sense that they were ever "in love" or a couple. Rachel says "the man I loved never came back at all". Okay. They were kids and grew up together. Their friendship is real, they have history and he knows she's there for HIM not his money. I get it. But apparently, they both go to college - he to Princeton and she somewhere else. Bruce is asked to leave Princeton and not to come back and he comes back home anyway for Chill's trial. At that point, he's what 21 or 22? As is Rachel who is somehow already working for the DA's office. I guess she was at the top of her class. Okay we'll let that go for now. Anyway, perhaps they have been having a long distance relationship while they are at different colleges? But very shortly after Bruce gets kicked out of Princeton, Chill gets killed and Bruce leaves Gotham for seven years! When he gets back, he checks in on Rachel and thinks she's seeing someone because she kisses some guy on the cheek. Rachel then sees Bruce for the first time when he's leaving the hotel/restaurant that he ends up buying (Bruce Wayne eccentric Billionaire) where she basically disses him for not being involved in the struggle to save Gotham from corruption. She of all people apparently believes the mask he is wearing until he reveals he's Batman. My question is, when exactly did they have time to establish a fully adult romantic relationship based on the people they grew into over the seven years Bruce was gone? If they were each others' first loves then yeah sometimes that can be the spark needed to reignite something after a long absence but I don't know. It just doesn't flow for me. I think Bruce idealized the whole concept of them being together. If not Rachel, who could he really trust as he did her. Makes it sadder because had they given it a shot, they probably would have discovered that they were different people than they were growing up and maybe not meant for each other. And Bruce wouldn't have stayed stuck for eight years in emotional prison out of loyalty to Rachel. Still gotta put the blame squarely on Alfred for those eight years though.
