A Tiny Heaven On Earth Without Prisons, Armies Or Their Own...

  • Today we will introduce you to a very interesting country. It doesn't have any valuable resources, modern factories, or fertile fields. Elementary and middle school are mandatory and free making the country's literacy rate 100%. They don't print their own money and the unemployment level is 2.5%. There's no airport or rail transport and a total of just 125 miles of asphalted roads. The country has never had an army or a ministry of defense.

I’m Andorran and I’m surprised to find this video about my beloved country. I just wanted to correct some of the extensive information given on the video. We do have a prison and we do have lawyers. We also have an airport but it’s located in La Seu d’Urgell, Spain like 10 minutes by car from the Spanish border. The government wanted to make an airport inside Andorra but that means we have to destroy a huge part of the beautiful mountains, for now the project is on hold. As for the railway transport there is also a project going on, not sure if they’ll make it possible anytime soon though. For shopping, you can only pay with Euros, if you have other currency, you must exchange or as a personal preference, I recommend paying with card which is accepted everywhere even american express. Also healthcare is not free, it is financed by contributions from employers and employees. I love my country, I’ve lived here my entire life and I saw it change every year but the way it’s evolving now is not my cup of tea and I might be forced to leave someday in the future, sadly. I do recommend everyone to visit it at least once though, it’s a beautiful country.

Andorra has a small army, which has historically been raised or reconstituted at various dates, but has never in modern times amounted to a standing army. The basic principle of Andorran defence is that all able-bodied men are available to fight if called upon by the sounding of the Sometent. Being a landlocked country, Andorra has no navy.
Andorra has a single prison centre, La Comella Prison, which was inaugurated in 2005. On 31 December 2007, it had 67 prisoners, representing 54% of the overall institutional capacity of 125. In 2008, at the time of the visit, the prison population rate was 80 per 100 000 of the national population.

  • @PhilippeDeatheRage
    @PhilippeDeatheRage 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

Wow - does no one fact check!? I love Andorra. But, so much of this is B.S.
    - - Doesn't have valuable resources: "hydroelectric-power, mineral water, lead, timber, iron ore, and hot springs, which have resulted in the creation some of Europe's biggest health spa resorts."
    - Doesn't have factories or fertile fields: "Tobacco is the most lucrative crop, and it occupies 8% of the total farmland. Varieties of tobacco cultivated include Andorran tobacco and eastern tobacco. The country has an estimated 1,100 cattle and 9,000 sheep, and meat production has experienced a slight increase in recent years."
    - Elementary and middle schools are mandatory and free: LIKE EVERY OTHER WESTERN AND MANY OTHER NATIONS. It's different though - that it's essentially high-school. It's called primary and secondary.
    - No rail transport: yes there is! TGV has a station!
    - Never had an army or ministry of defense: absolutely not true. They have a symbolic army. And before, they had a large compulsory army.
    - No prisons: La Comella Prison
    - No lawyers: lie! Lawyers are allowed, and there are lawyers there. The French "Advocat." Aleix Advocats is an example.
    - Postal service: within is free, but outside has to be sent with French or Spanish.
    - Healthcare: also, not true that it's for working citizens. It's for all citizens.
    - Deals and currently: not true! The official currency is Euro and that's what most deals are conducted in since they have an agreement with the EU.
    - Environment Protected? No
    - Army isn't needed?: that's because they have a treaty with France and Spain that requires France and Spain to come to their aid. They also require every household to have a gun and be ready if called.
    - Not necessarily tax free: VAT is applied to the prices. Though the prices are usually lower than neighboring countries even so.
    - Oldest country without changing borders: not true. That would be San Marino probably.
I stopped fact checking at that point.

I live here right now and i gotta say some things in the video are currently not true, for example the prison system and prisons do exist here and house about 40 to 50 prisoners, in addition to this the country is governed by France or Spain, changing hands every 5 years in order for governments to pat taxes to Andorra and keep some assets here in return. On a personal note i find the mountains to be beautiful and when it does snow there’s no shortage of winter activities, however if you choose to live here from another European or North American country be prepared for a certain amount of inconvenience in daily life as the Andorran people take their time with most things.

Minmal income tax and VAT, great skiing in the Winter, friendly people and amazing scenery. What's not to like? However, it's not an easy place to become a resident. You can either become a passive resident and not work, or an active resident to work, or run a business. In either case you need a completely clear criminal record. For passive residency you need to show a significant income and health insurance etc. etc. For actve residency it takes a seriously large cash investment in Andorra. Thus, your dream of moving to Andorra is likely to remain just that, a dream.

Other places which are similar are Norway and Sweden who have high minimum wages, a lot of free services and fewer taxes and trade restrictions. Makes you think of the country where you live right now. Are they really doing the best for their citizens? I'm moving to Andorra! Great video! 🇦🇩

    Andorra has 2 major industries.
    Smuggling and Tourism.
    Correction....one.
We used to visit Andorra whenever we were visitting family in France and Spain.
Even back in the 1980s this principality was a damned expensive place to eat, shop.
Although it is a major conduit between France and Spain,it had to import food, and staples pretty much all year round.
Its miltary and police is funded primarily by France. Its only 'resource' is the spending power of the tax exiles that CAN afford to live there.
    (Same as Monaco)
It is NOT actually a tax haven, but the megarich buy/lease property there so they can remain outside their own countries' tax jurisdiction for several months of the year whilst their accountants 'invest it' in the cayman islands etcetera.

It looks a lot nicer and cleaner than NYC but that's not hard to beat. There are small towns in America that are just as nice as Andorra. I'm happy for the people who live in Andorra if it's as nice and peaceful as this person says it is. In NYC it's just crime and unrest 24/7/365. NYC is no paradise anymore. For me, it was a paradise when I was growing up in the 1950s and 1960s. I wouldn't have traded Queens for Andorra.

Much of the economy relies on tourists from France and Spain coming for duty-free shopping. If France and Spain cut their taxes on consumer goods, much of the Andorran economy would disappear. The point is that the Andorran approach can't be duplicated everywhere.

I’ve lived in Andorra and still travel there to ski and board. It’s quite a strange little country, nearly equal distance travelling from Barcelona or Toulouse. I lived by the border in pas de la casa. I saw France and Andorra from my bedroom window.
It is very commercialised now in he capital as it’s tax free, caldea is worth a visit, but the sport hermitage at soldeu is now much nicer in my opinion.
Pas de la casa caters mainly for the younger market, it’s noisy and average accommodation but good value and easy to get around.
Soldeu has invested lots in new accommodation so attracts a family / older clientele but good skiing now it’s connected, le pessons by the lake has been a favourite place of ours to have a warm drink and catch the winter sun. A couple of smaller areas in between such as el tarter that provide good accommodation but you need to get the bus or drive to get more opportunities for a meal or drinks.
Other areas canillo, Arinsal too but I’ll be honest and say I don’t know them well.
A few bits of mistaken info, but all in a nice tribute.
To me, it’s great as you can drive to France or Barcelona and make it a really great trip incorporating skiing and a sandy beach or beautiful scenery with great food. I was there 2 weeks ago♥️

Food is 30% higher than neighboring France & Spain. The banking industry is privately owned and basically loan sharks. To get any type of home or business loan, you have to deposit the equivalent amount of cash. So whats the point of a loan? The valley has extreme noise levels. Primary building materials are stone, so it's expensive to heat. The valley's are steep, so south facing open sun is rare. Everything is in the shade. No airport, and extreme traffic jams in and out of Spain. The road into France is a narrow winding road often blocked by landslides and avalanches. The tourism is basically the entire economy so locals aren't the friendlest people in the world, in fact, constantly fustrated with tourist "in the way"

    • @geoffreyfoster8039
      @geoffreyfoster8039 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@Quincy , I've seen this culture in Chicago. High crime, low family values, low respect for women, children are vulnerable and abused, high rates of drug and alcohol usage, low personal integrity, long rap sheets meaning inability to make good choices, unable to take personal responsibility for their bad choices, lowest literacy rate despite education being mandatory and free.
I have actually come to endorse the 'defund the police' movement. Pull the police from the black neighborhoods. They already have their own culture, their own government, and they already pick and choose which laws that they will honor if any. Defunding the police and eliminating them from black neighborhoods has the possibility to end the chronic animosity between the protectors and the unwilling protected. I'm willing to bet that there will be a marked decrease in reported criminal activity.... that the crime rates will go down. There is also that possibility that the removal of law enforcement strictures will allow this black culture to pull itself up by its bootstraps and lead the nation in literacy, prosperity, morality, and freedom.
      I'll be waiting.

Princess Grace saved Monaco from France absorbing the tiny Principality but that was because France was being greedy and wanted the Mediterranean Sea Port with all generated wealth. Andorra would not serve any such purpose and stands as a buffer zone between France and Spain. If one or the other were to claim Andorra the two nations would be at war.
