I discontinued my overpriced satellite TV service months ago and now watch the channels I get with an antenna, movies that I get free from my public library, Netflix and TH-cam videos instead, and don't miss "regular" TV. I did the same 4 years ago and have never looked back again !! And as for the British tv shows, I couldn't live without them now !!!
For anyone wondering, while the slurping is SUPER annoying and gross, it does help tea tasters, taste the tea properly. It allows a good flow of oxygen into the mouth and over the tongue's taste receptors.
But they could have edited out at least most of the slurping. Kind of off putting to watch for prolonged periods of time xD And it's a really interesting documentary.

Very interesting doco- especially Scotts supplies. I would suggest though, that regular folks don't drink tea like that so I don't know why the slurp is neeeded? It doesn't duplicate how tea is consumed so would not be how we regulars taste it?
Especially if you are 1/2 asleep watching it on your laptop with earbuds. I thought I was under attack by unknown forces.
I watched it properly when I wasn't so tired and I concur it was super interesting.
I would have thought the reason to be obvious. Slurping allows the liquid to reach all of the taste buds/nerves in the mouth and throat so they can determine the quality of the finished product. Of course people do not drink like that unless they are so low that they pour the tea into a saucer and drink/slurp to partly annoy others. Watch Compo in last of the Summer Wine and how he partakes of the beverage, then often wiping his mouth with his coat sleeve.
I bet the Edwardians didn't allow for the loud slurping in their table manners! Imagine Dame Maggie Smith in Downton Abbey slurping like that! While there is a hilarious aspect to that image, they'd be horrified as well.
The packaging, the variations in designs and fonts, bottles, boxes, cans - so rich!
In the 1920s-40s, Ty-phoo offered premiums of fountain pens, stamped with "Try Ty-phoo for indigestion". (To which, one might ask, "What if you DON'T want indigestion?") To get one, customers had to collect coupons from packets of Ty-phoo, and send them in with a small amount of money. The pens were quite well made. I have one.

Feel free to skip the first 15 minutes. The producers seem to have a "slurp and spit" fetish which they exhibit well beyond excess in regards to the tea segment, which is the first 15 minutes, to the point that the very last sound you hear is a slurp. There is a reason for it (see lizvandoort666 below) but the producers overdid it by a looooong way. Bloody disgusting, frankly. Read other comments below.
Oh I would love to go back to Antarctica... It was the most amazing experience to walk thru both Scott and Shackleton's hut with all their stuffs left the way it was during the Edwardian period. THE best museums I have EVER visited.
Near the end of this video, the horrific conditions in the industrial meat packing plants once again show that it is better to decentralize food production and processing and preparation. Far better to raise and slaugher and butcher our own. Or - have it raised by a local or at least regional farm, and slaughtered and butchered by a local shop - by small business owners who CARE about what they do. And who eat food from their facility.
Of course, the larger industrialized plants COULD be run better. But when workers are 'cogs in the wheel' and owners care only about profit - and are shielded behind corporations.... things will be as bad as they can get away with.

......in England we have Marmite, spread very thinly, over hot buttered toast. It is delicious...but you WON'T like it if you slather it thickly over the toast as it is salty but full of vitamins, used properly it lasts a long time in the jar. p.s. we also do ditto with Bovril, another very similar yeast product. I think the original idea for both was to flavour gravies & soups etc but now they are commonly used as flavourable "toast toppers" if you're in a hurry!
***** I am American and I love Marmite on toast for a light snack, however it amazes me how many of my fellow country men and women do not. I can't understand why either. I'm always grateful that my small jar lasts as long as it does as I have to ask my grocer to special order it at $18.00 per small jar (or appx 8 British pounds). I also special order tinned puddings (treacle and chocolate) which price wise are very expensive here as opposed to GB. The puddings are lucky to last out the month though LOL! Thumbs up for Marmite.

Apparently, according to Wikipedia, Bovril is once again made from beef, instead of yeast.
Reading the label from my jar of Bovril (which expires July 2015) it says:-
Ingredients: Beef Stock (41%), Yeast Extract (21%), Water, Salt, Colour, Waxy
Maize Starch, Dehydrated Beef (1%)
......and other flavour enhancers and Spice Extracts etc. Yum Yum...think I'll go and have some on toast right now!
So it still does contain Yeast

Yes, it does-- but my point was it's now mostly beef. Well, beef stock and a bit of beef, dried. It's no longer a pure yeast thing (which it was for a short time betweel 2006-8).
It's real Bovril now.
I think I know why they call it sea pie when there's no fish in it. Some of my relatives are french canadian and they make a pie with 6 different types of meat called cee pie. Maybe the pie he made had 6 different vegatables in it. Six in french can sound like sea or cee if you're not used to french.
It's not so much the slurping--I did, in fact, know why it was done--but watching repeated expectorations was a bridge too far for me. Odd, since I am a total tea devotee...pun unintentional. The historical aspect was another source of appeal, encouraging me to soldier on and get past the slurping and spitting segment. I do so love alliteration! Altogether an interesting offering.
I agree with you, completely. VERY interesting!! I had to skip the hideous slurping bits. I understand why they did it, that isn't the problem, it isn't about "bad table manners". It's just that the sound is akin to nails on chalkboard for me- every time I heard it, I literally winced. It hurt. In the end, I suppose I encourage the authenticity, I just have to hear the results spoken at the end rather than observe! haha

I'll drink black tea and "constant comment" as well. I'm American, so understand that America is a country of coffee drinkers. As an well seasoned As it of 64, I never was a coffee drinker, but drink ICE tea.
Yeah, but Tea, Coffee, and Wine are all tasted that way. Slurping allows one to employ the sense of smell as well as the sense of taste, thus making your tasting more accurate and giving you more sense of the flavor of the product.

Marmite is a byproduct of beer making, specifically made from yeast extraction. It tastes salty as all get out to me, but it does truthfully boast a fair amount of vitamins, which was great for everyone. My sister said that it was popular with children, to get nutrition in them on a budget.
When the temperance movement was at its height, and millions of people stopped drinking beer, malnutrition rates soared, because people were no longer getting the nutrients from beer.
Sadly,Cadburys choc does not taste the same anymore, neither does Heinz ketchup...both having had their reciepes " tampered "with this last couple of years :(

It's called "High Fructose Corn Syrup". It's replaced sugar in a lot of things and yes you can taste the difference.

A friend of mine likes tea, & trying different varieties. However, one almost put him off tea for the rest of his life. He found one declaring itself as "Russian Caviar", which he decided to try...& wished he hadn't. He said it just tasted like bad fish, & was totally gross. Still, he did not want to waste it, so he forced himself to drink, with a bunch of lemon juice in to mask the fishy flavor
I've never heard of marmite till now. I live in the states so that could be the reason.

I went to a brewery once and we did a tour of it, and at very end by a door was the big container, called Marmite- all the excess yeast went into it... Never liked it myself or its compadres Veggimite and Vitamite...

I love this glimpse into the start of many famous brands. However, I have to say this. My sister is an Britophile, so I get loads of good edibles on birthdays and Christmas. The one time she gave me a tiny jar of marmite, I didn't speak to her for months afterwards. Spreading it super thin on toast, it is horrible! Love the show though. Thanks for posting
We have a saying in Britain that something is a Marmite moment/thing, whatever. Because it is something you either love or you hate. There is no middle ground. They even advertise it on that. Oh and the area around the factory stinks, I don't know how people live with it. We used to have to drive by early on Sunday mornings, and if you were a little hungover it was enough to make you gag!

Caburys Dairy Milk tastes different in different countries. I've had some from the UK, New Zealand and Czech republic and they all taste different. The New Zealand and Czech bars were imported.
Chocolate from the US, Australia and Japan just tastes nasty.
In the USA, the governent allows ingredients that should not exist in chocolate, like the substitution of cheap hydrogenated vegetable oils for cocoa butter. The loss of quality in most American-made candies, chocolates, and cookies has a benefit: they are no longer tempting to anyone who has tasted the real thing! But, sadly, Americans are addicted to sugar pretty much from birth, and sugar is powerfully addictive, so flavor and quality don't much matter.
@@Jefferdaughter It is not just about that. Chocolate really tastes different in different countries and variations in taste are far greater between countries than between brands. I had once ran across some old cook book from start of 20th century that stated which country's chocolate tastes better and which chocolate is suitable for which purpose, so it will not be just about modern nasty things.

I bought some tea a while back....the same kind I've bought for a while now, and I don't know where the heck the taster was the day they packaged it, but it had the taste and aroma of pungent rotting garbage.
Was it green tea? I've had some horrid green teas and I'm not talking about $2.99 c**p in the market. I got so disillusioned that I now just buy black teas, pu-er being a favorite. Maybe it was a bad year for green?

SepherStar That's a bummer. Usually the spices mask the tea flavor itself. Quality control must've been on vacation. For a cheaper priced chai Twinnings and Tazo aren't too bad.
Chai tea has a lot of complex spices like black pepper in it and might be a bit harsh for some palettes, I love tea and don't care very much for it myself. Consider trying something milder varieties like earl grey with some honey and a splash of milk (mild black tea). Citrus teas with a dash of honey or sugar are also delicious for tea beginners.
It was Coffee Bean chai tea. I'm not sure if it has black pepper in it.
Tea is water with a little bit of flavor. Its a lot like a soda that's had a whole bunch of ice melted into it.
Maybe I don't have a discriminating palate. I don't know. I just know I don't like Tea. :D
Tea has an incredible range of types and flavors. Preparation is key. Soda is a toxic amalgamation of fake flavors with a little bit of water.
There are so many varieties of tea that I can assure you there is a type of tea you would enjoy. Whether it is camellia sinensis (tea) or herbal blends keep trying different types of tea. Soda is okay, but can be a bit sugary. There is no mind altering substance more benign than the magnificence of tea.
So in essence; you've barely tried one or at most two sorts of tea, prepared in a specific way, and is now judging ALL teas on it. Tea can be strong, weak, sugary, honeyed, bitter, sweet, fruity, berries, herb, leaves, bags, dark, light, green,spicy +++... In essence - there's a tea for everyone willing to try. If you drink alcohol - there's some similarities as while its all alcoholic... it still does not mean that beer and wine tastes the same++... in exactly the same way there's great variation with tea. If only you are willing to try and experiment I'm absolutely certain you'll find your own version and flavor to enjoy :)

I can not believe how prudish some people are. That is the correct way to taste tea and many other drinks and editing it out because some people don't like the noise would be like editing nudity out of an art show because some people think the human body is disgusting. Get over yourselves and watch a history program without being childish about noises for friggs sake!
