Tonight’s Panorama reports on the death of a dream, the plan by the United Nations to disarm Iraq of its weapons of mass destruction. Three years ago the United Nations Special Commission on Iraq, UNSCOM, charged with ridding Saddam Hussein of his lethal arsenal. became fatally compromised. It allowed itself to be infiltrated by a highly sophisticated western spying operation which so unbalanced its integrity and independence that today UNSCOM is dead in the water.
Ritter says the CIA ran an unauthorised eavesdropping operation against the Iraqis from UNSCOM’s office in Baghdad. He says the British and Americans hid behind the United Nations to run a spy headquarters in Bahrain and that information collected by the spies was used by the British and the Americans to pinpoint targets in the ‘Desert Fox’ air strikes on Iraq.
