I’m so happy you’re going in on her! She’s incredible. absurdly long comment incoming, i couldn’t help myself. think it might actually be helpful though: I just did a deep dive with yebba for a while, and there’s some stuff online & in interviews that I think really enriches her songs. It’s clear you get so much joy & feeling from her music, and you do such a good job of taking time to appreciate the lyrics and feel them. i think you might really get a lot from these other sides of the songwriting yebba writes a lot about her mom, and her faith. she was a preacher’s kid, so church & god were always a big part of her life. and i’m sure it’s showed up in the comments already, but sadly it’s an important part of her story that yebba lost her mom to suicide about 5 years ago when she was 21, a couple weeks after she performed ‘my mind’. it’s a tragedy, not much else i can say. dealing with that, processing the pain and betrayal is all over yebba’s music. Knowing to look for that re-casts a lot of moments where you might imagine the lyrics being addressed to, for example, a partner “When you went away / moonlight took the day” that ‘you’ is her mom (for yebba at least). the album cut for that song has a different bridge that’s more direct, n also beautiful also, she said in an interview that ‘all i ever wanted’ is actually about god’s love, not a partner’s - which totally flipped some pieces of it. She talked about losing her faith for a long time after her mom’s death (which seems fair). so there’s stuff like wanting to be in his light, only to “watch him hold her” where the ‘her’ is yebba’s mom, and that just means something totally different and really powerful to me. “dont you know i tried to call, but can i stay the night” carries different weight if you say it to god instead of a partner. “i know that you promised her everything” ... etc etc etc there’s a lot in this song that makes me feel some big things. (lord knows nobody’s probably gonna read this far) But! If you’re listening to her songs more, keep an eye out for moments where it actually gets really deep good luck! have fun! i’mma come back for all the yebba reacts you do ✌️
Oh my. You just blew my mind. Someone did say it was about her mom and she died of suicide but I honestly was like “how 🤔”. You just explained it perfectly. You got me sitting here in that state again at a loss for words. Thanks for sharing. 🙏
@@DDoubleDJ yw man it just felt like that unlocked a whole layer for me and i want to share it with others i really recommend evergreen (the apple music video one) or her live take of october sky! they’re both beautiful and both really directly dedicated to her mom
Oh my word. All I Ever Wanted is my favorite, and learning this made my heart ache. It definitely does bring such depth to an already beautiful song. Thank you so much for sharing.
You saved me from writing a long comment myself. I think many of these songs are either about or a reflection of her mother. I think this album took her years to make because of how much she had to deal with and process in the wake of her mother’s suicide, Especially because of her upbringing in the church, her father being a pastor and her faith. That being said, Yebba is in a class by herself.
@@iamlpinthe312 Yes, she is definitely in a class of her own! So glad that Mark Ronson, the producer of her first album, nurtured her vast talent, never in a hurry to get a result, just letting her take the time she needed and wanted to make her vision into a reality. Love that she named the album "Dawn", a symbol of a new day for Yebba, bur also her mothers name. She is extraordinary!
By the way, "that Wurlitzer" is being handled by the prodigious James Francies. A 26 year old jazz pianist from Texas who recently blew up. His first album "Flight" from 2018 has established him. Pat Metheny is taking him out on tour soon. Yebba sang one song on "Flight" called My day will come. She co-wrote it with him. Check it out! Thanks again for a sincere and genuine reaction to this phenomenal singer/songwriter. I am subscribing to your channel.
She is in another league than most singers. Adele is good, but there is no comparison. This kind of musicality in vocals is rare. Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha, Jazmine Sullivan come to mind. Songwriting in the same universe as Joni Mitchell. She is a rare gem. Thanks for this reaction.
Oh yeah see you are tuned in!!! Yebba is cut from a different cloth and I’m so happy I got introduced to her music and glad people are enjoying me lose my mind to her skills. Evergreen should hopefully clear copyright for a tomorrow post 🤞 I lost my mind for real on that one but for different reasons as this one lol.
I think I’ve listened to this performance once a day since it was released on TH-cam. Thank you for reacting to it. NPR has a lot of Tiny Desk performances by a ton of artists. You should check out their TH-cam channel. They used to do them in a studio behind a small desk with small audiences. Since covid, they’ve switched these up to them being done at artists home or another studio. Some of the best performances I’ve seen have been via NPR’s Tiny Desk.
Yeah I’ve done yebba, Anderson paak, Olivia rodrigo and BTS. All epic. I wanna do el debarge but it probably would get no views because these kids don’t know el debarge 😂
Such an absolutely beautiful performance. I can hear again and again for the rest of my life. 💗🙏I really enjoyed this experience with your perspective.
Distance...so sexy! One of my favorite cuts from the album. I know she talks about "How many years" being about her mother, but listen to "Paranoia Purple". I think that one is even more about her mother.
“Tiny Desk” is a concert series that takes place behind a tiny desk at the NPR radio station in DC. They are not performing at the office currently due to the pandemic.
maybe reaction videos aren't what you are looking for. We as creators have to put ourselves into the original content enough to deem it new content to get through copyrights. The video is supposed to be my reaction, feedback and thoughts of the song. If I just sit there and listen then at what point is it where it stops being a reaction and just me sitting there with someone else's copywritten material playing? Sorry you didn't enjoy my reaction to the performance.
Few things as satisfying as watching another person fall in love with her musicianship and ability to share a story. Thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it! More Yebba on the way.
They used to make mirrors out of mercury silvering back in the day - she just sees her reflection in a fancy/old mirror!
Her voice and songwriting are impeccable! Watch/Listen to it all! She has worked with and written with everyone!

Yes, Diana you are exactly right!! I thought of those singers as well. And the writing is 🔥
Yebba has cited The Clark Sisters and Aretha Franklin as her main influences. So you are spot on!

Glad you enjoyed it. 😁 I see she has something new out I’ll have to try and do tomorrow.
She is special. Never heard a voice like this, not even close!
Have a listen to her live performance of “Boomerang “.
One of my favorites 😁. My first yebba vid and one of my first reactions ever.

Mercury was used in the making of mirrors back in the old days.

wow...that was just wow...great reaction
I highly recommend October Sky ( which was live in the video) , Evergreen, Gravity cover.
Evergreen dropping tomorrow 😜. That one was amazing. Hope you check back and enjoy.

Please check out Gravity- Clark Beckham ft Yebba. They take you to church with their voices and a piano.
Just gotta edit it and hope it’s Not blocked lol and hope it doesn’t need a 48 hour copyright hold 😂
Adele created her sound...Yebba lived it. There is no comparison. Yebba is the truth
They sound alike but they use their voices differently she has a different blueprint from Adele
I suggest Rachelle Ferrell...live!
a pause every 6 seconds...PLEASE!
Bro you be pausing entirely too much you can’t enjoy the music like that 😒 -_-!

stop pausing the video so much. it takes away from the experience
