How to keep chickens COOL and ALIVE in HOT weather!

- Hot summers can be very stressful (and sometimes fatal) for chickens.
1. Provide shade for their coop and run
2. Install a mister set to a timer that goes off every afternoon
3. Give chickens watermelon, cantaloupe, and other foods to help keep them hydrated
4. Provide access to clean, cool water
5. Chickens cool off through their feet - provide water to stand in and change it daily.
Note: There is no substitute for attention. If you will be out of town during the summer, have someone put eyes on your chickens at least once a day. They can ensure water levels are full, timers are working, and your flock is healthy.

Great owner😊😊
I don't have chickens but i have dozens of quail and i live in the Sonoran desert where it was 108 degrees F yesterday. The birds are stressed so i have 24/7 fresh water for them and all comers like rabbits, coyotes, and Javelinas, mostly nocturnal visitors.
My birds hang out under shaded areas that i water down in the morning and early afternoon. These places have a good cross wind and the birds know it. They get cantaloupe and water mellon plus abundant bird seed. I take care of them.
My chickens have 5 sources of water in their coop run, two catalpa trees giving them plenty of shade, and I pick them an abundance of wild blackberries since they grow around our property and are the second most hydrating kind of berry 😁 I share watermelon with mine too.
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Agree with the bricks. Bricks or clay pottery holds the cool of the water and the chickens will stand on that instead of the water. Reducing the risk of bumblefoot.
Good tip, thanks!
bak bak!
I use bricks in the water. The water gets very dirty and some chickens are afraid to stand in water anyway. The bricks wick the water up to the top of the bricks and the evaporative cooling cools the surface of the brick. The chickens love it and take turns standing on the bricks.
I got the idea from another TH-camr, but I don’t remember his name.
Good tip, thanks!
I have a black chicken that has been keeping cool by meandering through the brush on the edge of the yard and standing in the giant puddle I’ve made for her under the trampoline. A pretty good breeze goes through the brush, and she’ll roll in the dirt from a mole hill, then go back into the brush. She’s currently being wooed (harassed) by a very confused dove…
Love that.
What does the misting system do for them?
Cools the air temperature several degrees. When it's on it's their favorite spot.
@GrowingInTheGarden Aww they must be very happy chickens! 😊
