Sidechain with the sp404mk2 and Koala ! 1. Connect a device who runs the Koala app to your sp404mk2. Phone, iPad. 2. In Koala. At the SAMPLE tab. Set the MIC to Record from MIC 3. Record or load up a Sample and send it to a Bus . For example Bus A 4. Apply the Sidechain effect 5. Pull the Treshold and Release knob all the way down 6. Choice MIC as the Source. 7. Hit the External Source pad on your SP404mk2 8. Play your sample from the Koala App and find yourself a Kick on the SP404. 9. Now everytime you hit the pad with the Kick. Your sample will “Duck” away for the kick. 10. Enjoy!
Thanks a massive ton for the vid. Like... if this was medieval times you'd be like an sp404 Knight, riding around on a horse with armor, through the villages with a brass horn, blowing it and everyone gathers around to hear the happenings of the sp404.
I don't know why it no longer lets me sample through the USB-C port from one moment to the next. I tried changing the settings, changing the cable, resetting "all data" and "system data" but it still doesn't work... I don't understand where the problem is since it had never happened until the day before. Has this happened to anyone else? do you know how to solve the problem?
Even harder for me, I haven't got used to my 404 yet only having it a few weeks and not being able to get time on it as much as I'd like. I need to practice more 😂
@@davidmaskew I feel you. Peace sp vids ! Appreciate your dedication to helping us producers. I would say since the new update my sp404 has been crashing regardless what I’m doing. I haven’t really used the updated features yet. During My regular work flow I had about 4 crashes totaling the new update. Good thing is the memory feature in the sp404 saves everything you did just before the crash. This is a big issue especially using this for my live shows. Hopefully they fix this problem. Thanks again bro!
Ever since I updated my sp404 I been having problems with it like when I resample it shut off and come back on every time I do it. Is anyone having that same issue?
I didn't notice any bugs on mine thus far. I'll have to go more in depth to see if I see it. I pretty much just messed with the tone generator and looper a bit. I resampled and merged to create "multiple oscillators" and didn't have a resampling issue even resampling with multiple effects and multiple times. But yeah I'm sure there will be a small update to clean it up in short time for those who are seeing issues. It does suck when that happens, but it seems they do listen to their customer base and actually respond. I gotta give Roland that!
@@artisans8521 Yeah, I don't doubt it, but it just isn't happening in my unit yet. Maybe it will, I'm just saying I haven't experienced it. But I'm sure there will be a bug fix soon.
I had at least two incidents today. One crash when I hit record to sample through the input fx. And another when loading samples from the SD...they previewed and seemed to load just fine, but the machine acted like there wasn't anything imported at all...just a lit pad. Restarted and all was fine. I seened to hit a couple other snags as well, but I'm fairly new to the device and it could just be me. And I didn't do the factory reset after my update.
I noticed the djfx delay does not behave like other delays/reverb/echo, in that it doesn’t stop the delay when you switch off the fx(or spam the exit button), but only if you switch to another fx
Not sure why this was under the radar, but I just saw that Roland posted a 4.05 update that addresses some of the crashes and the resampling issue. Not sure how many of the issues in the video got sorted, but at least the update is out there. Same with the SP404 MK2 app. FYI.
Hey! I have been having a repeatable issue on a brand new one, just got it and dropped 4.04, my issue is that the first time I go for recording a beat it does half the countdown and crashes, it restarts itself and it works fine, it’s the only actual issue I’ve found
The issue I have is when you set the tempo for resampling recording before selecting the pad to resample to it resets the tempo. It’s a frustrating extra step. I did a factory reset and it still does this.
I thought mine was crashing a lot (whilst resampling and importing samples) because I hooked my 404 to a power bank. Now I know it’s a bug! Thanks for putting this together. Hope Roland fixes this soon!🤞🏻
mine crashes about 30% of the time when resampling stuff. the looper gets distorted quite quickly. maybe that's just because default level value is quite hot and we just have to be careful with gain staging but I didn't test that yet. also the new feature where you can set how many bars to record doesn't work very well for me. there's always a bit of silence at the beginning and the recording end is also not perfect. might be because of effects and no delay compensation (haven't tested either) but it's a bummer to still have to edit almost everything.
I did the software update but for some reason, mine is now randomly going off sync with the measures by it speeding up on its own from one of rhe pads while the others work fine and the pad number is random for re sampling. I do have a Sony Tough 32GB SD Card in it thats been working great but not sure if anyone else is experiencing that. Or mayne it's just my unit. By the way mine still has the issue of the volume sounding lower and lower every time i resample 1 pad to another pad with a new instrument thats been a problem for me since day 1. But i didnt feel like taking the unit back because they were all back ordered at the time.
Not had these issues since update but have a weird thing where if master volume knob is set to 0 it puts volume at maximum. Maybe it's a feature I'm not aware of😅
First time it ever happened. After the unit was idle for 2days when I pressed a sample it stuttered and stammered on all samples. I just shut it off and restarted and it was fine. Seems bullet proof other wise.
Believe it, I have updated it twice. And I factory reset all system data twice (which shouldn't be necessary, IMHO). My workflow is busted completely. The only thing I can do now is to load a set of samples, the turn of and turn on the machine. Then everything works. Even shifting a sample from pad to pad does not help. So I guess there must be something wrong with the download routine. The crackling in the looper I have not tried, I dont like the looper at all (if I would I would have bought a 505, right 😂) .And for your information you are now talking to a software test engineer with 15 years experience under his belt. Also the sample merge does not take into consideration tempo and pitch changes nor loop settings. So what is does is use an on the fly created simple "start them all at the one" and "drop the volume parameter in" pattern via step recording and then resampling that pattern, is their really no way to parse the sample playback settings (or ask them prior withna more extended menu?). So smart but not smart enough, since step recording does not take into account these parameters either. As far as I can see, Roland needs a 101 course on use case driven software development ASAP. So I have decided to put my SP404 in its drawer, and buy an Akai sampler in full hardware. Probably an X. All these bugs and use case errors are starting to take the fun out of using my device. Look resampling is the bread and butter of anyones workflow since when the 202 came out. Testing whether or not that works is PARAMOUNT god damned or gods damned. If I am capable of detecting the error in 3 minutes of use what the hell is your testteam doing. My experience is waiting stressed out until the software is finished on 3-4-2024. Only having a window to test the update functions and leaving no time to execute the regression testing 😢. Version 4.03b indeed.
How long does it usually take Roland to do fixes when something like this happens. I've not had my 404 long and it's my first bit of kit but they seem pretty good at fixing things from what I've seen. I imagine these kind of bugs are not uncommon on updates this large but I'm probably less likely to run into the issues as much as I'm still learning my way around the the device and its previous feature set. Looking forward to trying the looper out and seeing what I can do with the sound generator.
People tend to read over the fact they need to do a factory reset. Which solved most (nearly all) issues....I have two, one had the crackles AND the resample issues and after a reset, NO MORE ... Even though I use it about 8hrs a day.
Hi, I've only just updated my unit. Are you saying I should just do a factory reset now. I've not had it long and I'm pretty new to this. Luckily this means I also don't have any projects good enough to worry about losing yet 😂
Thanks for the info - its absolutely worth doing if you're having issues. I'll be honest I've never done it in the past and the only problems I've had are actual bugs that end up getting patched by Roland but its good to know this worked for you! Time to get backing up those patterns and samples 😁
I've had probably half a dozen crashes over the last couple days during resampling and randomly while looking for samples to import. It's not world ending because I don't lose much when it happens, but it is annoying.
They really shouldn’t have done that marketing bs with the 4.04 version number. When an SP crashes when hitting resample it is clearly 4.0b2 and they should have waited until Star Wars day at the very least. Went back to version 3… please don’t pull another Akai, Roland!! 🙏🙏
I have a theory that having so many projects from v2 and v3 loaded still was not helping. So after it went blank on me I formated the sd and did a factory on a the machine hopefully itll work now.
Hey man, coming to you cause i have no idea if roland support will respond. any idea how to fix this switch to batteries bug? My SP refuses to power itself with USB power since this morning, I can only assume DC power still works on it since it was on that last night, but didn't expect this issue today.
Another bug is in DJ mode when you're loading in a track while still mixing, it loaded the track (takes a long time) but then caused the track that was playing to stop. And that ruins your mix. Thank God I didn't get rid of Version 3, I went back to it.
Sidechain with the sp404mk2 and Koala !
1. Connect a device who runs the Koala app to your sp404mk2. Phone, iPad.
2. In Koala. At the SAMPLE tab. Set the MIC to Record from MIC

9. Now everytime you hit the pad with the Kick. Your sample will “Duck” away for the kick.
10. Enjoy!
Banks A to E controls the banks in Koala.
To get to your samples in the SP404 you have to go to bank F or another from the second row.
This is good info, now there will be a lot people integrating koala app, it would be nice a tutorial of this ! @spvidz
I was struggling to find a reason why someone would use Koala if they already own a 404mk2. This is definitely a reason. Thanks for this.

Great tip on turning off Bus 3 and 4 when resampling. Hard to remember to do when you're in the flow.
