Great job, very inspiring! I am one of the „oldies“ in the class with sailnr 069. Never had a lot of time to even get close to the top guys but had plenty of fun and still enjoy it at my age (almost 60 now). Particularly I the capsizes and near-capsizes feel so real to me… ;-) This is the best toy I ever bought myself, and I have many toys… Thanks for the videos and have a great time on the MustoSkiff!
I’ve owned one of these for nearly five years but haven’t put in enough time to get any good. It’s the SF bay in Northern California so pretty ferocious conditions. I’ll be studying your moves closely to help my struggles! You’ve inspired me to get out asap
I can't imagine these in SF Bay. Could just picture myself struggling to right it in heavy air, all while being swept out under the bridge in 5knts current. I've found that anything over 12-15knts in mine, especially in choppy water gets dodgy fast.
I have a similar boat to one of these, an RS700. Only at my fourth time out. I certainly didn't look anything like this competent! Some of those gusts and lulls were very challenging.
I can’t say I’ve seen an RS700 here in Aus but I reckon they’d be just as tricky! The lulls were the real problem in this one, they were shifty too. Thanks for watching!
The lulls in these things are worse than the gusts for sure. Learned that you really need cat-like instincts to throw yourself into the boat without hesitation. Last sail I took, only capsized once out in the big water, vs 4 times in the shifty/puffy conditions just trying to get in and out of the harbor.
@@tpurves Where I sail, prevailing wind is over a hill and it is just unsailable from that direction, especially on max rack width being a lightweight. I think I'll make friends with the cat guys for those days.
I am not sure but the Musto Skiff class is pretty strict one design and have a link up with Harken so your blocks may be a problem. Welcome to the class, I attempt to sail one of these in Switzerland in much less wind than you and with much less ballast than you. It looks like you are making good progress..... the swimming and heavy breathing is definitely part of this class. When the Musto is in the groove going up wind it feels incredible. Good luck for the nationals.
Thanks for the comments, I checked the rules before I started changing all the blocks, rule C6.1.4 (c) (I) says you can change the blocks to any commercially available block as long as the sheave diameter is the same or smaller, so I should be ok with my ratchet blocks and the high load kite halyard block I installed in episode 1 (I hope). I agree the upwind groove on the Musto is amazing, I can’t think of another boat that feels that good. Good idea about easing the main into the gybes, watching the footage back I was lucky to get through that gybe near the mountain without capsizing! Thanks for watching! 😀
@@TomStuchberySailing my experience with skiffs is that you rarely ever see a boat over done on vang, but quite often under done, if in doubt pull a bit more! Do you have a vang gauge setup to repeat settings?
Good point, I think I was just cautious of going too flat since it was so fluky. I haven’t got any numbers on this boat, but it would be quite easy to put some angle gauges on the side of the mainsail pocket so that I can quickly pull the lever to the same spot each time. Good idea!
@@TomStuchberySailing Cheers, guess im just too eager. Means i get to watch it twice tho! Good work on the skiff, looks pretty tricky in inconsistent wind. Best of luck for the nationals!
Thanks Josh, maybe I should set up future uploads to premiere mode so that it delays it an hour or two before it lets people watch it then it might be in 4k straight away?
I upload as unlisted until processed! Videos are looking real crisp. I should really get a gopro again, shame it broke. Looks like you got good breeze for some exciting sailing. You're really making the boat go...
@walowesk7122 that’s a good idea, I’ll look for that setting next time, I hate the thought of people getting notifications for a video in 360p! I have enjoyed your videos too!

Thanks, I hope I’m still able to sail boats like this at 60, that’s a good effort!
Your progress in such a short time is amazing. Keep on going! 😊
Thanks, I will keep going!

Thanks Ben, it’s worth the effort, but SF bay is probably a bit full on from what I hear!

It's absolutely amazing sailing that you did! Can't wait for the next video!
Thanks Harrison!

Oh and whatever you do don't lay off when on the wire.... you will teabag instantly 🙂
Also on the gybes you might want to sheet out the main more before going into the gybe and superman the kits...

More vang and more weight forward!
Yeah, I tend to stay a bit too far back. I’ll try even more vang next time!

The video quality is only 360p, how come?
It takes a little bit for the 4k version to process, should be fixed soon!

Be honest, lose 25kg and get fit
That also would have helped! This is a pretty old video, i kinda got the hang of it eventually
