As a non-American, can someone please explain to me why the mudroom is always so far from the entrance? Like it makes no sense? I get that Americans use their cars a lot, but then their shoes won't be muddy and won't need the mudroom anyway? Wouldn't it make more sense to place it closer to the entrance so that.. you know.. you can place your muddy shoes when you get home? Also, the second thing that boggles my mind is why the primary room is usually on a separate floor from the kids bedrooms? If for some reason your kids needs to get to you in the night (or vice versa), they'd need to walk down the stairs in the middle of the night when it's dark... which sounds like it's high likelyhood of tripping and falling.. I don't know. Maybe an American can help me out here?

Utility room is the technical term for a laundry room in a residential house. Laundry room sounds too basic
