    First off, thank you for what you do. Keep on making great videos. I have learned a bit and saved some money along the way.
    Secondly; It isn't mold release. I do believe it is mud, from the water jet that was used to cut it out of a sheet. The top and bottom finish looks like raw finish from the steel mill, while the outside and inside edges appear to be either water jet or plasma cut. For the price of those, I am surprised at the lack of quality, not to mention the ease of use issue.

      @JohnnysReloadingBench  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are absolutely right. I am just really stupid when it comes to metal. This thing is clearly water/plasma/laser cut or something like that. It never occurred to me. I knew it didn't seem molded or machined or stamped but I didn't think it through any further. Maybe the cutting method is why it costs so much?

    • @zanpekosak2383
      @zanpekosak2383 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh water cut? Figured it mist be either laser or water from the smooth edges. For the price of it they could polish the damn thing in a vibratory rock tumbler with some paste.

    • @Eric-4501
      @Eric-4501 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Defiantly looks LASER cut to me. I operate a LASER machine at work. It looks to have been run thru a type of tumbler and has had some grinding done to it as well (around the finger reliefs). At $30 a piece they should have burned it out and then machined out the holes used to pull the bullets.

    I find that a electrical crimper works every bit as well as the "grip and pull". Simply use the part of the crimper designed to crimp the strain relief. It works especially well with 223 rounds, with no discernible damage to the bullet itself. Plus, it's a much less expensive option.

    I say drill that top hole out to make the top bend thinner material = easier to squeeze. And yes some plasti-dip or rubber hose on the grips would be good.

  • @signalsoldier31
    @signalsoldier31 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I have one and something I do is actually expand it and then slide it down as close to the case mouth as possible. I also flip it up side down so the finger grips are not at my thumb. Since then it actually has worked really well.

    RCBS bullet puller is the sh*t period! Easy as heck to use, the collets are nice and strong and once you've pulled a few and get a rhythm down, no scarring on the bullets. This is my go to when I f**k up a batch, and if it's one or two rounds then it's the kinetic hammer. Cool vid tho JRB

    Nice update on the grip and try and pull,, I made one out of a R-8 collet and just use the same at RCBS kind. If your going to keep that G&P put a bicycle grip on the end, but fill it with silicone first and let it try, the pressure you need to close it the handles are very thin as you know. Thanks for all you do with the videos

    Good honest review Johnny. One of my reloading buddies has some cheap Harbor Freight channel locks (A set or four of them) that he custom drilled out the holes for his bullet sizes, Then he bead-blasted the interior of the holes along with the Jaws of the channel locks. Those are his go-to pullers. However, You hit on one thing, The kinetic puller leaves damage free bullets from the pulling process.

    I own one of these but it marks up my bullets something awful. I gave mine to my nephew and he is using a lite coat of rubber paint to prevent the scratches. As for me I’ll continue using my Hornady bullet puller. And my kinetic hammer for smaller rounds. Great video Johnny as usual. Thanks

    Have you tried RCBS coller puller? I have it and easy to do a batch and it doesn't leave marks, slippage is rare once you figure out how much you need to tighten it. I've pulled factory 7.62 lacquered sealed bullets with it without leaving marks, also works perfectly with 22 cal. That and blue FA kinnetic puller covers all my bullet pulling needs.

    For those bullets that slip either hip n pull all you need to do is put it your seating die and brake you crimp . Then use your puller . It only take a few thousands of a inch . Even with the kinetic bullet puller I run my bullet in my seating die to brake the crimp it’s a lot easier

    I had to pull 500 .38SPL. Started with the impact style, not gonna happen! Went with the RCBS version, it is great. When I'm loading, I put it in my spare press and pull when needed. I bought the collet for all my different calibers. I usually buy Lee stuff, but they don't make a puller.

    I've worked with these before. There needs to be a hinge where the two handles meet at the top. It kills your hand trying to squeeze the bullet, and I think it's because there's too much tension.

    Johnny if you think about it by polishing the bullet hole it will give you more bearing surface. With a ruff surface you only have tips of the jagged material gripping the bullet. Polished will make the entire surface of the puller grip the bullet.

    I use a pair of old linesman’s pliers that my sparky buddy hit a hot wire with. It blew a piece out of the cutter so I run my rounds up the press clamp it in the V groove of the pliers and it leaves 3 little teeth marks in the jackets and I’ve shot a few after pulling them with no effect of functionality. Got the pliers free and the bullets can still work if you’re daring enough. Look worst case I was gonna shoot the bullet anyway and if I throw it in the trash instead of blowing my face off I’ll pay for the few that didn’t go down the barrel. Great video man!

    I know this is gonna sound crazy but I cured the slip problem by dipping the bullets in powdered rosin just like athleats (spelling?) use. It works. As for the kinetic bullet puller goes they work best by using a heavy rahide leather maul,(hamer) . I use a antigue 4 lb rawhide maul that I use on my leather bench for tooling leather (only a little) because of it's heft. It works better than wood or any other suface I've tried and beleave me I've tried just about eveything and broke several kinetic hammers also. But using the rawhide mallet or maul I've not broken my last purchase and it's lasted years now.

    good concept. however a $14 soft-jaw pliers from Lowes did the job. Just lay flat on press, squeeze and lower ram. bullet doesn't drop and can be dropped in bucket and NO bullet damage. I did 60 pulls in about 10 to 12 minutes. Very quick and easy.

    I almost ordered one of these when looking at bullet pullers. I'm glad I ended up with the Hornady, though it took awhile to figure out how to get it to work well.
    ►After raising the ram, hold the press handle with light pressure so that the puller's handle can move the ram down until the collet grips the bullet wherever it's happiest. I find that I don't have to "lock down" the cam lever to pull bullets if I do this,and I don't mark up bullets nearly as often, and I'm pulling swaged brass jacketed bullets.
    ►The right striking surface changes everything when using a kinetic hammer. Dense steel that doesn't move (in my case a short chunk of railroad track) makes them work great. Even 55 gn .223 only take a few whacks. It just occurred to me that a thin plastic vial that fits loosely inside would contain everything cleanly for recovery. Some extra foam under it would cushion everything.

  • @danielmattera7604
    @danielmattera7604 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Excellent info, as usual! My 2 cents: Kinetic pullers - At the bottom, where the bullet lands after dislodging, is a piece of foam cushion material. Over time, this stuff wears from bullets striking it. When its pretty chewed up, the tip of the bullet may be somewhat distorted from striking the plastic 'floor' of the puller. If the bullet has a polymer tip (ELD-Match), the tip WILL be distorted. Sooo... Reuse those bullets, and blame the distorted tip for the 8 you shot!! Thanks for experimenting for our benefit! (I'm leaning toward the RCBS puller.)

      just push a piece of eraser down there, not a scratch on polymer tip bullets either.

    What about wrapping that with some paracord? I think that would be comfortable in the hand and really easy to do. You might also be able to put a little bit of duct tape or electrical tape in between the crimp portions to pull the bullets without damaging them. Just kind of what I think of when I look at that tool. But I agree all bullet puller suck I think the saying goes measure twice cut once goes for installing bullets correctly also. Unless the headspace is messed up which at that point you're screwed

    I have found that a small needle nose vise grip works well for me. Once you get it adjusted correctly. It does mar up the bullets sometimes but can be used with a press by laying it on top and pulling down on the handle. I used it on 100 FMJ 30-06 bullets that I bought by mistake on line that could not be shot at my range. I was able to put a new soft tip bullet in them so they would not be a complete loss. I do not plan to use the FMJ bullets I took out. Just threw them away. May not work for most.

    I have a question you or maybe another viewer could answer for me. I have some older maybe 15 years old IMR 4895 powder that I loaded up some 55gr hornady SP bullets with and it would not group at all. It looked like I shot the target with a shotgun. The powder looked and smelled fine. 23 to 25 grains in .5 increments. I loaded some 73 gr ELD-M with IMR 4064 and the groups were under an inch. Do you think the powder is bad or is 4895 just not accurate in a 223.

    I bet it has more to do with the placement of the hole on the tool than anything. The mechanical leverage is all at the end. If it had .22/.224 and .30 at the end it would probably be "okay".

    Newbie here I need help…soo I bought a new box of ammo, it’s Federal American Eagle .38 Special Soft point,…and I noticed that it looks like the bullet has a tiny flat on one side..like maby when the casing was crimped, the bullet itself got Grabbed, and there is a small flat on one side of the copper jacket? And on the other side there is a thin groove (Crimp mark) on the bullet right where the casing ends and the bullet begins.I figure the bullet is lead undernieth that copper jacket
    Can i use this bullet at the range? Will it be safe in my 1873 Winchester

    The grip and pull works better then any other puller on the market. The only negative is when you have to pistol bullet on a turret or Progressive press . Good thing I still have my old single stage press . I still use my kinetic puller when I have one or two rounds to pull . The collet puller tear up the bullets or the case mouth or the bullets get stuck inside the collet

  • @denisleblanc4506
    @denisleblanc4506 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Looking at this tool, there are a couple of modifications that should be done by the manufacturer that might help a lot in it's actual function. First, there are no reasons I can think of to justify so much space between the various calibers. They should all be moved towards the fulcrum (30 caliber) to give you better mechanical advantage. Maybe it was made this way so strong men like you wouldn't collapse thin jacketed varmint bullets, but us older folks wouldn't have to make funny faces to use it.
    Second, they could either make the fulcrum a little thinner but then you strong guys might just snap it. I might try just filing a small notch inside the fulcrum and see if it helps any. You might even try finding a short piece of sturdy plastic tubing to slip over the bullet and would allow you to use one of the larger caliber positions to pull your bullets. I've used the RCBS one a lot but it's expensive too. Specially with all the available collets if you need them. As you said, the kinetic one is about the only one that works with pistol calibers. But man, if you're pulling some of those military one's with sealers, you have to beat the crap out of it.At least they are usually pretty heavy and that helps with the kinetic puller. No, I'm not strong enough to crack them, mine looks like new after may years of occasional use.

      Does it scare the bullets?

      MrAwesome glock, I like mine as well. I don't get scared on the average. Like Johnny has stated, Pistol is a whole different thing.

    Interesting device. Maybe it would help with some rubber in there to grip and not mar the bullets. And dip the handles

    I'm happy with the cam lock, but with this tool, slip a section of silicone hose on each side of the handle, your hand will thank you.

    They have an official video up that shows the pistol puller. Amazingly they used it on the first problematic load that came to my mind - a .45 ACP round nose. It does look properly seated at the start, so almost no bearing surface. Of course they could easily have had an oversized case, no crimp, etc, but does sound at least a little promising. Too bad the price is so high!

      Stupid chintzy 22 cal Forster seating stems have bit me in the ass twice now. I'll have a full explanation once I finally finish these 224 Valkyrie videos!

    Sounded like a great product, I was wrong. Had same issues. The pistol puller was worthless.

    When I get a bullet that slips I turn the puller over and gently squeezy the puller. It will grip better but you need to be gentle or it will dent the bullet.

    I feel your pain....I do. Get some rougher texture masking tape and apply it to the inside.

    How does the grip n pull work on lead bullets

    • @Tula1940_LB
      @Tula1940_LB 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      jedidaddy76 Use a kinetic puller. Lead is too soft.
