He smashes through several pure stone walls in mere minutes, meets a real-ass Kappa, trains with a god, fights bears with his bare hands, fights someone who BELIEEEVESSS IN YOUUUUU, fights possibly the most deranged man in the series, and is the first person Majima uses his shadow clones against. Dude has truly seen it all
Saejima’s side story was one of my favourites in the game along with taxi racing, and ironically hunting raked in more cash than being a full time taxi driver so theres that 😂

Y'all forgot the part where while he's in prison, Saejima is straight up doing Dragon Ball Z Image Training with his prison buddies, except instead of image _training_ its image... visiting a hostess club. And when you finally get outta prison you go to that same hostess club and meet up with the same hostess you were imagining in your mind and she identical in every way. This man's imagination is on par with Ichiban, if not stronger.
The entire city (which Saejima has never visited before btw) looks exactly as he imagined it, while he only had a regular map to go off. Either Himura's descriptions were incredibly detailed, or Saejima is just built different.

- Also substories are cannon In games they make the cast complete certain versions of them. And the producer of Yakuza 3 specifically stated that substories are their to show more of the character that they can't show in the main story. Via tonel shift and etc.

Saejima is literally at the point that nothing fazes him now. I mean, he's Majima's brother, has delt with supernatural beings, has fist fought a 2 meter tall man eating bear twice and won twice, fought a regular brown bear and beat it in under a minute basically, has fought and tied with Kiryu TWICE, and fought Majima going all out to a stand still. By the time he fights Ichiban he's just like, "Yep, nerdy gamer and his rag tag group fighting like videogame characters. Time to spin Majima around like a Beyblade and throw him at the nerdy gamer. Pretty normal week so far."
Interesting how the whole hunting shenanigans was actually a full story about redemption, getting over the guilt and the eternal struggle between men and nature. Just Yakuza things.
And when you stop to think about it, Yama-Oroshi was probably something out of some tale. That bear was basically the mountain's response to the unchecked and disproportionate hunting that was happening there. And when you come clean with Onodera, when you relieve the grudge that was happening within the village and when it was decided that the bear should live, Yama-Oroshi was never seen again, because it has fulfilled its role.

It saddens me Saejima is not playable in more games. He's a lovable giant and there's something very satisfying about playing as a walking mountain throwing people around like ragdolls (Unupgraded Essence of Bell Ringing is my favorite heat action). Though maybe they went a little too far in 5, giving him a stunning Tiger Drop and making him nearly invulnerable when in heat.

Glad somebody talking more about the Yakuza 5 side mission. I'll be honest the side missions of Saejima were more interesting to me than Saejima's main story quest. A man that can take on bears with his bare hands and a literal mountain god; I'm surprised not a lot of people talk about this.
I remember I played Yakuza 5 for the first time around Christmas time. Seeing a man beating groups of other men in a Santa costume while sipping on hot chocolate hits different
Yakuza 4 was bizarre adventure, But 5 is just more bizarre. It’s even bizarre than kappa in Kamurocho from previous game and I love it. Especially, Saejima’s chapters where think start to get more bizarre the more side contents you progress.
As much as Yakuza side content goes this is not that out of the ordinary. The series likes to feature supernatural or just really over the top elements. Osaka Castle, the ghost substory in Kiwami 2, Kiryu beating up ghosts or meeting with a time traveller in 6, even Komaki himself seems to be unnatutally old. And let's not even talk about Dead Souls. Saejima needed a godlike trainer to match his godlike strength so they gave him one. Or you can just argue that it was a simple hallucination due to frostbite and not being accustomed to the height and cold weather of the mountains.
Plus this is the episode where Kiryu drives a taxi that can go over 200mph (he probably couldn't even drive in previous episodes at lest you never see him), Haruka has a dance off with a member of the most lethal assasin family, Akiyama is trained by a potential war criminal (or pathological liar, take your pick) and Shinada runs into a nobleman who is also a martial artist in the poorest city. Not to mention the bad guy is the literal chairman of the Omi yet no one recognizes him (not even Saejima), Majima suddenly has a wife that was never brought up and never will be and the final bad guy doesn't even know why he is the final bad guy. Man, I love Yakuza 5.
These Yakuza videos are some of the most enjoyable things I've seen in a while. By the way, have you tried Saejima's very cool, consumable-consuming, location-specific, secret heat action, whilst wearing the clear correct choice of Santaloons? It's quite the scene.

Yakuza 7 tries it's best. Remember that to fight street thugs, Ichiban has to hallucinate them into RPG mobs, after being shot by Papa Sulu (rubber bullet, of course) and dumped in a homeless camp. And then homeless guy becomes a corporate CEO asset raider, who can summon cats that turn into tigers, and clan patriarchs that have temper tantrums in their diapers.
It was so whacky but dear god, the fight theme fucking slaps. I thought the Saigo training was the most whack training person until I got to Tendo's training.
