Thank you for the video. It was the most helpful info I’ve been able to find. We are looking to car rental for same thing. If we did blue car rental and got to the office we were hoping to return it to the airport when we fly out early the next morning.
We are coming on the NCO cruise in June and we plan to spend the first day, just walking the city and possibly getting transportation to the blue lagoon.
Then the second day we were hoping to rent a car.
Is this something that sounds OK and doable or any other suggestions?

Hi and thanks for the kind words!
We're assuming you're disembarking the ship and staying at a hotel in Reykjavik. The main thing is you're able to park your rental at your hotel. That's key - parking is scant at the port and expensive (and a bit limited) in town overnight. We would suggest an additional rental day, if possible. The city highlights can be covered on foot in a half day, unless you want to delve deeper into some of the museums and shopping.
As for the Blue Lagoon, we would advise using the car rental on that first day (parking is free). It's about a 45min to 1 hour drive, which can be expensive with a taxi - no rideshare in Iceland). The Blue Lagoon offers a private shuttle service - you can check prices here:

Point is, with your own wheels you have the flexibility to also explore other parts of that region on your own time. Iceland roads are excellent and comfortable to drive.
Otherwise, returning to the airport, so long as that's confirmed by the rental company, sounds good.
      Have an awesome time!

I have another quick question after doing some research today. We are in Reykjavík for two days, but the first night we are still staying on the ship and the second night we got a hotel. If we just rented a car for the one day, do you think we could do blue Lagoon and golden Circle with the rental car and that one day. Since we don’t have a hotel that first night, I was leery about having a car rental for two days.

Doable. In June, you'll have lots of daylight, midnight sun. Here's a link to the question from a travel agent (self promotion not withstanding, the suggestions are pretty good).

It will be a long day. Out early to pick up the car, then early as possible to Blue Lagoon, then on the road. We did our route in about 4 hours. Just takes some planning on where you want to stop exactly. Good luck and happy travels! 😀

Did you not go to Geyser ?

No, we passed by, and it was very crowded, so we decided to move on.
