A young Paul Franklin with a mustache and a perm playing as good as ever on pedal steel! Not only a great player and musician but a wonderful teacher and an even better human being and friend!
Brilliant song-writing, and this performance is very good .. But Kenny Rogers and The First Edition undisputedly own this song now .. That version never fails to send a shiver up my spine .. Thanks Mel for making it all possible.
Travis Coonrod, thanks for your comment....cuz after posting 1900 vintage videos on our ImaSportsphile webpage....we think the next best thing to seeing Mel Tillis live back then....is seeing him live in concert on several of our videos in our music section
My favorite version of Ruby is Johnny Darrell's, but I also love Mel's version. Especially the harmony on the end "For God sake's turn around." Love it!
mosrite60, thanks for your comments....as we at ImaSportsphile are glad you enjoyed this video.....cuz since Mel Tillis just passed.....the multiple Mel Tillis videos that we have posted in our music section on our webpage are now even more of a treasure to us. Also, the twin fiddles always created a unique sound....be it Tillis & The Statesiders or Haggard & The Strangers or Gimble & The Texas Swing Pioneers....the twin fiddles always created a wonderful unique sound.....as we already have more than a few videos posted on our site that bring that uniqueness of sound to our viewers.
Ga McDo, thanks for the comment....as we at ImaSportsphile are wondering if you are saying that the middle fiddle player looks like Carroll Hubbard the Congressman from Kentucky in the 1980's?
We at ImaSportsphile responsible for posting this Mel Tillis video and the 2000 other vintage videos on our webpage at ImaSportsphile usually understand the 1000's of comments that we respond to....but not this one....so who is Paul Franklin?.....as we assume that is Mel Tillis' given name.
Ok...Thank you for the comment...Paul Franklin is the Steel Guitar Player , If you guys don't know who Paul Franklin is, sorry then you don't know Mel Tillis Legacy and history....On January 31, Paul Franklin, at the Mel Tillis Memorial, set in for a couple songs with some of the old statesiders.
John Hopkin, thanks for your comment...cuz we at ImaSportsphile appreciate when folks bring our mistakes to our attention....so, we changed the title to Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town....afterall, we who are in charge of taking this 2300 hrs. of vintage video from Sony Betamax cassette to digital in order to be able to post this awesome video library on our webpage, were not even a gleam in our daddy's eye when these videos were recorded way back in the day....so we have indeed made some mistakes in the 1800 videos currently posted on our site....but by the time we post the remaining 7000 videos, our site will be a reference library for The Greatest Generation and The Baby Boomer Generation....cuz these folks deserve their place in history....and we want to be as accurate as possible....so, thanks for the help.

Not a particularly good version, but interesting to note that Mel seems to concede that this song is indeed about Vietnam - he'd previously said it was about WWII or Korea, but the 'a war I didn't think should have been fought' reference seems to confirm Vietnam, which everyone had always assumed anyway.
@@BigBillKelly-x2z Ed, he actually never said that. In fact, tillis said the song was inspired by a WWII vet he knew, but only as a character study. Later in life, he would say, as in this video, that it was about "a war I didn't think should have been fought." Tillis was a teenager when Korea started - unlikely he would have already developed anti-war opinion at that point
Love Mel tillis and all his music 🎶
Love this song! Great version
