- Meet Tallie! RSM wants to introduce you to her adorable, sweet Black French Copper Maran named Talaria. This hen is such a cutie pie and RSM has some interesting observations about her - from the mystery with those gorgeous chocolate eggs to where Tallie ends up on the pecking order. I Have 8 Of Those Hens Black Copper Marans And 5 Easter Hens 💟💟 The Eggs From The Marans Are A Deep Chocolate Color And The Eggs From The Easter Hens Range From Blue Green And Olive Colors
I have a silver-cuckoo maran and I adore her to bits. She quickly became my favorite after my buff orpington (my all time favorite) passed a way last year. She's been laying 4-5 eggs a week since she became laying age back in January
We have 3 Blue Cooper Marans, about 10 weeks old, bought them at Tractor Supply. Because they weren't sexed, I bought a Golden Sexlink chick with them so that I would be guaranteed at least one hen. I bought them as Black CopperMarans, but what we got were Blues and 2 of them are Roosters. The little Blue hen is absolutely gorgeous! We have a couple of Cuckoo Marans (English, no feathers on the feet) and they are my favorites. Super friendly and pretty good layers too. We have a White leghorn that was raised with the Cuckoos, and nothing, nothing will out lay a Leghorn. Have Gamehen, a Buff Brahma, 2 Cochins, which I consider to be a novelty breed. I dont recommend Cochins for a free range or backyard flock, although they are pretty good layers. Oh, we have a polish hen, (My wifes favorite). We have a couple of very old crossbred hens that havent layed an egg in years, they are at least 10 years old, .... Pets I guess.

My "Red" a Rhode island red was the sole survivor of 18 sister chicks who died anywhere from 6 weeks to 5 months of Mareks. She is now 1 years old and has never laid an egg
I bought her 2 Easter Egger sisters who were 3 months old when she was 6 months old. They started laying at 5 months. She will sit on their eggs and make sounds like she is laying and even sings an egg song sometimes. I love her egg laying or no egg laying💓💓💓🐔🐔🐔
Oh that’s so sweet. Poor thing and I’m so sorry for losing all the other little ones. But Red sounds so happy now! I’m proud of you for loving and accepting her no matter what.
I have always wanted a maran. Right now I have a buff Orpington, a isa brown, a barred rock, a Rhode Island Red, a golden comet, a australorp, a silver laced whyandotte and a few months ago I got 2 8 month old easter eggers. The others are 1-2 years old. They are very unsocial with us and get picked on by our other girls. It’s so sad. They lay beautiful blue/green eggs and are beautiful birds. 😥

Many Thanks for the video, beautiful birds. Do any hens have big tail feathers, or is that a characteristic of roosters ? and is it difficult to keep their feet clean ? or do they usually clean themselves (I'm just starting, and know nothing) Thanks again.
Hi! You’re right, the prominent tail is a rooster characteristic though some breeds have a more upright tail than others. And I very rarely have to clean feet, though if you look up my videos on “bumblefoot” (which is a condition caused by cuts on their feet that gives them a staph infection) I do end up soaking their feet a few times a year. But as a rule they clean on their own from mud etc. ✌🏻❤️🐓
I have a "fancy" assortment of chicks from tractor supply. 3 look like they are marans, 1 columbian wynadotte, 3 easter eggers, and 1 mystery chick. It looks similar 2 the easter eggers but darker brown and smaller. Theyre 11 days old.
I have a question about a bully hen. Our pullets are 20 weeks old. I noticed that two of them looked like they had downy type feathers on their back right before their tails. We are having a heat wavy and the girls are hot. When they hang their wings down I can see bald spots on two of the birds. I have seen the two bully hens pecking at that area. Is it possible they are molting or are the bald spots from being bullied? I have isolated the two bullies. What do I do for the two that have feathers missing? It is too hot (over 100) to cover with a cloth. All 4 are laying eggs. We do not have a rooster. At this time 5 pullets are laying- none are crowing. These are our first chickens-we have so much to learn! Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Hi! So there’s not normally a molt until they’re a year old so (unless it’s mites or lice which I doubt) it’s bullying. For the ones who have feathers missing I’d just give them time, and extra protein to help their bodies recover snd grow new feathers more quickly. Feather Fixer is a good you can get that would help but any high protein snack is good. If they’re bloody you can also apply Blu Kote which helps keep the area clean and not red which attracts more picking. I’d keep the bullies up for at least a week so the girls can grow feathers back (or at least start as those bigger pin feathers take forever) and then see what happens.
I have 3 Wyandottes and 3 Austrolorps. It's funny to see their personalities. The Ws are like highschool cheerleaders while the As are the not-so-popular others. The Ws walk proud with their noses high and do not at all like it when any of the As gets too close to them. The As are just easy going and mind their own businesses, but scream from time to time from 'accidentally' get into the Ws area and pecked at by them. With the Ws came also a Maran and she was very sweet and the first and only one to blend right in with the As. Unfortunately, she caught illness from one of the As and died 3-4 days from her arrival. Now we got 6 BC Marans chicks in the brooder. I hope they're as sweet and docile as Ms. Maran who died. Right now, they're just being rambunctious little peeps that stink up our house. LOL.
That’s so hilarious! Yes I love attaching human cliches/personalities to mine too. And my W is definitely the gossip, big sassy and nosy. Haha! And I hope everything goes beautifully with the new marans; I have only ever had one, who died young from reproductive issues, but what a neat (and beautiful) hen she was!

I have 2 black Maran and 1 lays a lighter color egg than the other one, but we usually do get 1 egg a day. Mine are pretty young barely going to be 1 year old, and true to them they are very friendly 1 more than the other, and I do have an olive egger and she tends to be more stingy with her eggs lol, but I l9ve them to pieces and she too is really friendly loves to fly on top of me and my daughter.. we're pretty short so it's easy lol.

@@realsimplemama I love this video and the breed as a whole. As Dandelion was saying they are originally from France where they are called French. I noticed everywhere else in the world just calls them Black Copper Marans. They are the most gentle chickens I've ever been around. A really good choice for the farm or backyard. Thank you for sharing yours!
