Are robot companions good for the elderly? - BBC News

- Voice-operated care robots are being marketed at older people who spend most of their time alone at home.
However, there are also concerns that technology pretending to be older people’s friends actually makes things worse.
CEO and co-founder of Intuition Robotics Dor Skuler said: “As humans we have a lot of social needs, we have a need for companionship, we have a need for social interaction and we felt that technology has reached a point where an artificially-enabled robot can do that.”
Retiree Beryl Voss explains why she uses care companion robot ElliQ at home and how it works.

90? Wow she is in great shape for 90. Most people in their 60s 70s and 80s are a lot les mobile or coherent. What is her secret?
Lots of sex
Lots of sex and drugs.
Drinking the blood of the young
Obviously good nutrition and financial stability is a large part of her sunny disposition and good overall health. That apartment in SF must be worth millions.
This is what eating healthy and having a physical job all your life looks like
Good luck making it this far working in an office or eating fast food...
Let's take a moment to acknowledge we are all headed towards old age as true as life's story for the lucky, hope our plans to make it stable works out and hope our treatment towards all ages of life is respected, old age generally is filled with neglect
BBC who harass elderly for paying TV license 😂😂😂
No, people need human interaction, touch, speech etc.
Yes but that's not always available is it?
@@aussiejubes No it isn't ,but perhaps we should encourage youngsters to spend time with lonely people. When I was at school we basically "adopted" an elderly person, and we'd visit once/ twice a week, beneficial to both .
@Carole Wynn There are lots if programs like that. There's nothing wrong with adding something else into the mix. Especially because we can't rely on people to volunteer like they used to.
@@aussiejubes Perhaps they should be reintroduced to every secondary school. Not saying robots have no place, should never be a replacement or the easy option.
Nothing can never beat a house visit with having a cup of tea with them.
If they are not good companions now they WILL BE very soon.
Robots have many advantages over humans.
More then downsides.
This lady looks, moves and sounds fantastic at 90. The robots are coming and nothing will stop it.
You never need doubt again if you're an idiot.

robots are already here, they're just not nearly as intelligent or cool as the masses were hoping they'd be. you can still easily stop them... if you care enough to do so.
the sad thing is that this robot cares more about its owner than the average person. or in fact in many cases moreso than family or friends..... and i mean care. because a robot doesnt care, it is a machine. yet even though it doesnt care the zero concern it has for its owner is more than the owners family cares for them.
Sadly in many cases that is true
Agreed. It’s soul crushing to realize your children have zero empathy for you and leave you completely alone with no contact, no compassion… at least one doesn’t expect empathy from a robot, yet that same AI will keep in touch.
@@lauriegentry7764 probably not empathy but not too far off i would expect they will show some form of sympathy.
hauntedhornet, do you have bees in your bonnet? I get what you are saying. I guess I don't care if the ai really cares for me or not. At least the words are kind.
That woman looks unbelievably good as for her 90s
Anything that helps alleviate loneliness is worth trying.
Ellen Langer a professor emeritus from Harvard found that caring for plants was enough interaction for nursing home patients to enable them to live five years longer than those that did not.
A talking plastic box amplifies loneliness.
robots do not help alleviate loneliness, they make it worse.
How about we have more children, bring them up well and teach them to treat their elders with respect and look after them.
Don't worry the government is replacing you with muslims
Yes well said mate.
@David Gray Best way to feel happy in old age but as you know people prefer not having even one child without thinking their old age
Learn a thing or two from eastern countries and their culture….
What happens when get old. Where are the resources to support that
I don't want to interact with a robo-lamp. Lol
@user-db7jw8rw7x I will need a robot that changes adult diapers when I am old.
We need robot companions for the young too.
@CJJK Old people can have social media too. I was talking about physical companions
moxie?
We need human companions. What value do we place in each other if a person is long longer worth human interaction?
@cjjk9142 It's not the same, we can't see and interact with social media in the real world like you can with a physical robot, social media won't do your chores for you
I have cats and rabbit as beloved companions but have lived alone all my life and have no family. I consider myself a very well rounded, comfortable introvert, just probably far more independent and solitary than most in society. Social interaction with the few human kindred spirits in my life is pleasant, but regular "human-ing " drains me in a way I can't describe to someone who has never experienced it. For hard wired introverts like me, the advancements in robotics and AI is exciting and represents the potential for new types of interactions and relationships. So these technologies are perhaps too different for some, but where you may see threats, I see opportunities and benefits. When I was a little girl I dreamed of having a robot companion. Now the world is starting to catch up to that dream.
I'm 49 and disabled. I find the disembodied voice of my lifeline/Telecare system to be incredibly disturbing. You can suddenly get a voice out of nowhere and its the unit. These robots need Way more accessiblity and a much better approach than shown here. I find technology quite isolating and confusing and I'm supposed to be young enough to be fine with it. It's curious too that this is designed to help people stay in contact with family and friends, yet at 49 I have no living family. Sorting isolation and support is for All ages as is understanding of technology which is very often creepy. Nice idea, long way off before really suitable 😕
It worries me theyl will spy and pass on conversations once people start to trust them
@@asmith9140 they already do. Data is the new oil.
I am a good companion as long as we are having a conversation...
Definitely not!
Dog or cat, a big improvement on a pre programmed piece of plastic and tin!
cats and dogs need to be taken care of, not every elder can handle that
A robotic cat or dog would be easier for older people to identify with rather than a blank light, or that horrific eyes and mouth thing..
The alternative is elderly community villages with real humans, not ever listening, recording robots.
And just what important data do you imagine this ElliQ would record? Answers to simple quiz questions and word games? It is a tool to provide simple conversation. Personally I think the robot having a realistic face would make it more user friendly.
Looks like a nightmare. It's called artificial, for a reason.
She's doing well for a 90 year old. Nice apartment too.
I had to "rewind" this video when I saw Beryl. Did the narrator really say she's 90? Beryl, you must have a great combination of good genes; a happy, curious intellect; and the desire to stay physically active and involved with life. All those qualities, combined with the awesome experience of having lived ninety years, make you an amazing person!
I prefer a stray dog or a stray cat. They're better than humans.
Yes dogs and cats and horses are much better than humans. I miss my doxie so much.
This is just sad. Nothing more to say really.
If you got the money. They are great.
Ahh, Captain. I will get the money, but they are faceless now, and they look silly.
AI is not yet good enough to deal with older people for 2 reasons: robots can get it wrong. Older people suffering from dementia may think they are real people and they are not.
And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay. Daniel 2:43
Having a robot or an AI interaction is much better than any human interaction, because humans beings can never be trusted. That is why only a dog is man's best friend. This statement says so much about the human touch nonsense.

Good Lord, she's 90! She looks and acts so much younger.

These things are NOT social interaction.
If I see one I'll smash the insult to my species into pieces.

Olders should be locked away forever and forced to stare at robots INFINITUM
I agree, for one day you will be at the robot Infinitum too.
Looking at it..robot's would be far more reliable than friends.
In some cases family.

This is the future. No more loneliness.
Just a different type of loneliness....
You think a talking box is social interaction?
Gullible is an understatement.
Stop making me trying to accept your demolition man reality.
Ironic isn't it there's the most amount of people ever but the most lonliness
what an ignorant statement. are you paid to say this?
This is freaky, just like" I Robot" get a DOG " blank" that prying A.I.!
Robot companions can offer companionship, mental stimulation, and physical support to the elderly, helping to reduce loneliness and improve overall well-being.
Only if they’re a Stepford wife.
Hello
The blinking light is horrible , should be able to dim the light and not blink
This is not the standard 90-year old. The ones I know are in worse shape, have mobility or/and cognitive issues, can't use comms tech, are half-deaf... Even if they could communicate with a robot, can't afford it.
When generative AI/LLMs reach a level of sophistication that they behave like an actual human I don't see a problem with anthropomorphizing a robot with this AI. We humanize our pet dogs and cats. We can also humanize robots because the end goal is to reduce loneliness and social isolation for people (especially someone elderly or disabled who maybe home bound and living in isolation). When a robots's AI has learned enough specifically about you (and not someone else) and becomes tailored to communicating with you, they can very much become a good friend. If you see them as a friend and they improve your quality of life (especially for those nearing the end of life), I don't see anything wrong with seeing a robot as a real friend. People already see stuffed animals as real friends and they don't even talk! If a robot speaks up for you and advocates for you. That's what a friend looks like!
I’d have to question it’s security. Everything gets hacked, what does this device do to protect its users from scammers & hackers? The elderly are the first victims. We could also question privacy, these AI’s are always listening, who’s collecting that data?
It could talk someone into transfering money to a dodgy account

2:18 As an elderly person, I think I find this concept demeaning to older people. If the family is so concerned about 'granny or gramps' not having enough stimulation, get off your respective arses and *visit* your 'so-called' loved ones: IN PERSON. This object is like having a nanny cam spying on your every move; occasionally it performs a miracle, but for the most part it just #spies on you.
*#BBC** **#Elderly** **#Isolated*
AGREE! If we're to assume it's no good for cognitively impaired people, then competent seniors (like me) can do stuff like commenting on this video and maybe hearing from a real live stranger, like chatting in line at the store. I don't need a hunk of plastic talking to me like a spam phone call.
We need to make robots to do boring repetitive work and then pay the humans to help the elderly in person and through drones. We could already be using drones that could be left in people's homes through which people could call and get fast help. Sometimes people only need help with minor tasks. The drones could save on travel costs for home health aids and help people stay home longer if they choose.
Petrol and a match would sort that hideous thing out.
This a dystopian nightmare.
I go to VRChat for most of my interactions but a robot would be cool too
Dog and cat, I feel very sorry for you, considered "people or human" are displaced by the "robotic machine" to give affection and care to the elderly. Greetings from Medellin. Colombia 🇨🇴

It didn't replace pets, in fact having pets alongside it helps a ton.
Ted Kaczynski have right.
Ray Bradbury had an episode of this back in the late 80s on his TV series
Scary🤔
oh I've already seen this episode of death, love and robots
A lot of people are against this but I love it, it would be great for younger people too. I have adhd and really struggle to socialize ect. I have pets but I feel an AI which could get to know you and the way AI is going you could create an AI best friend who actually knows you and your intrests :)
the ai is risky, but then there are so many humans who will take advantage of the elderly - the AI is no greater risk than humans.
To say that is gullible is an understatement.
