    My roommate (a witch) was hosting a gathering once, and her brother, to tease her, arrived and greeted her with, "When are the human sacrifices?" She answered calmly, "Well, now that you're here, we can start."

    Thank you for this video. I found myself nodding along at your first point. I had this particularly pushy friend who continued to ask me to do tarot readings about her future - which is not something I do. At one point I was doing a reading for her on the current state of her relationship. After we were done with that, she proceeded to demand a card reading about when her boyfriend would finally propose. I told her that I don't do readings like that but I would be perfectly happy to help her look into why getting married is so important to her. She declined that offer, grabbed my deck and pulled the cards herself. I stepped back from that friendship afterwards.

    • @kelly-annmaddox
      @kelly-annmaddox  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Ughhh, she broke two cardinal rules by not only pushing you to do work for her but then TOUCHING the cards without asking?! Yeah, good riddance.

    Honestly, I feel like the first two points apply for witches and lawyers, I'm both, and I don't want to be asked constantly to make a spell for you, read this contract real quick, check my cards or that legal case you have, nor do I want to be asked why didn't it work yet. Magic and the legal system can be slow, okay? I have a real ob and my own practice to take care over here.

  • @PandorasExecutioner
    @PandorasExecutioner 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

    "Don't compare one witch to another" is the one I struggle with most.
    I get really tense because non-witches will try to relate to me in a well-meaning way. They're really supportive! But they'll mention the mainstream craft out there, like "oh look! they're representing your subculture pretty well here" or "Let's do something for the full moon! (while giving me an optimistic expectant stare like i am automatically into moon work as a witch)." and I will sweat in chaos magic. And I don't even feel comfortable getting into a whole explanation about how I actually primarily work with dragons and sigils.
    I could use a whole video on this.

    • @PandorasExecutioner
      @PandorasExecutioner 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Maybe i need to just say something like, "im super happy youre curious about it. every witch's practice is different. if you want to know more about my specific focus areas, feel free to ask me. but im happy to hear about what you're trying out."

    • @kelly-annmaddox
      @kelly-annmaddox  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @PandorasExecutioner Aww bless them, it seems like they're well-meaning but have a very narrow view of the craft. 😅 It's perfectly ok for you to explain that actually the mainstream/commercial use of witchcraft doesn't reflect your practices at all so they are basically always failing to recognise your beliefs every time they try. 😅😅

    • @PandorasExecutioner
      @PandorasExecutioner 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      "every witch's practice is different, so that media representation is just one version. i'm pretty picky about it, so there are only certain representations I really enjoy that speak directly to my own practice."

      @@kelly-annmaddox thanks so much for the idea. xD I'll say that from now on. I really like it. Solid blanket answer. we can get into the details and occasional overlap, but i like starting with "nah, commercial stuff doesn't represent me."

    Witches have wonderfully thicker skin than muggles. The best response to a silly question or remark is to give a 'knowingly smile' and keep quiet. Hey, that method works for ANYONE!!

    With the first point, I'm typically happy to throw down for someone I have a genuine relationship with. What really gets me, though, are the people who refer to us as friends, but then I only hear from them when they need something. If you only have time for me when you need a reading or a working, let's call it what it is. You aren't a friend, you are a client, and we shall treat the exchange as such. All of these types of things are becoming somewhat of a concern for me since I'm slowly incorporating more and more obviously Witch-ey things into my life, clothing and living space. I guess I'll see how much of it becomes a problem as the years go on. I'm glad that I've never said any of these things to people around me in my life who have seemed Witch-ey or just spiritual in ways I don't understand, even when I was a lifelong Atheist I never saw fit to be an arse about it and just let people be even if I did think they were silly.

    • @kelly-annmaddox
      @kelly-annmaddox  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Oh you were definitely one of the GOOOD atheists, baby. There is nothing that makes me roll my eyes into my head harder than an atheist with an axe to grind about the fact that I believe some shit that doesn't make sense to their **superior** brain. 🙄🙄🙄 See how things progress as you become more 'out' as a practitioner. Things will come up from time to time because they always do when you've been a witch for a while, but I think it's all about being prepared to handle it the way you want to, and sticking to that plan. I hope this video has helped you with that all important prep work. x

    Lots of great stuff here. The part about not outing a witch is far more relevant now in the U.S. than I would have expected previously. There are people literally looking for excuses to Other people so that they feel justified in causing harm or just not giving a fuck about their needs. There was a guy fb stalking a friend of mine harassing people in the comments and asking if people were Witches. I refer to him as DV Dudebro, and he is (or at least was) running for public office. We'll see if he's still on a ballot since he has recently gotten into some rather public legal difficulty due to his own bad driving and decision making.🤭

No one should be outing anyone. This is such a great topic and video, I love it! 😂 About 5 years ago my younger sister became single, and not only was she at my place all the time (and I was glad to provide the company but I felt like I was also being used in that way), but she also asked me to do readings for her about every possible topic (love, healing, emotions, getting herself back together, work and whatnot). The most annoying of all was when I would gently and respectfully answer her questions with great advice honestly, and she would say "no but please pull the cards for me" and the cards would give the EXACT same answers I just did, and she would go "wooow, illuminating, thank you so much" blablabla, and never giving anything else in return like you also suggested. Facepalms all over 😂 Eventually she asked for the one reading too many, and I told her "please stop - I'm not your personal fortune teller". Of course she was mad at me, but she never asked for anything witchy ever again and I was glad I made my boundary clear. Sorry that was a bit of a ramble but I felt like sharing cause it probably happens to a lot of us. Thanks so much for the amazing video Kelly-Ann ❤

    What I don't like is being with another witch and they start talking about witchy things when we are with a group of people who don't practice. It makes me feel really awkward. I'm not ashamed to be a witch but I don't want to talk about it around people who don't practice it. I'd feel the same way if someone in the group started talking about their own beliefs like Christianity or Catholicism.

      @WitchBeLike Oh HARD agree. Time and place. I honestly don't like talking about **anything** that is going to exclude or confuse everyone else in the group.

    If you keep nagging Salome to dance for you, then you can probably expect a beheading in some shape or form.

    My partner is the worst offender. First I am not out to everyone just a select few. The first time I met his cousin he says out of the blue “Linda is a witch” uhhhh, then family comes to our home for the first time he goes “hey did you Guys see the witchy room?. Just a week ago my friend was over and he says in front of her “why don’t you read so and so’s cards”. Jeesh I can’t win ‘cause I have spoken to him about this.

    I agree with you about a lot of these however the most annoying thing people say is oh you're a witch do you call the quarters I mean really that's stupid cuz not all witches call the quarters. And my dad went from this Christian fear-monger to asking me what's this for what's that for what's the meaning of a white candle what's the meaning of the sun tarot card and of course I would tell him those are good questions and I really appreciate him asking however my mom was the kind that you tell her and she'll tell everyone she knows she told my aunt and my aunt actually bought me some tarot cards and some crystals for Christmas and I actually kind of appreciate that because I didn't even know that I would have at least one supporter

    The most annoying thing IRL that anyone ever said to me because I told them I'm a Witch is "Do you practice white magic or black magic?" So racist. And they totally didn't get it when I said so. It happened when I was really young though, and I didn't know how to just say, "Hey, that's f*cken racist! Knock it off!" Regarding the Jeezus-botherers, I show them my Pentacle and tell them I'm a Witch. They run away.

    On the subject of your last point, is it equally annoying to be asked 'how do you know magic is real' or 'what proof do you have that your energy and intention have material effect'? Like, if they ask why you believe what you believe but don't ask you to prove it or anything obnoxious like that. Or is it along the same line of annoying questioning?

    I've been watching your videos for several years now. They're always smart, passionate, informative and a great resource for those who practice and those who are curious (that would be me). I think this video is a bit of a miss. Here's why: for a video that elucidates the many ways in which peoples' biases and insensitivity can be patronizing and demeaning, the overall tone is, well, patronizing and demeaning. I've noticed that the majority of the comments thus far are from fellow witches, and I believe them when they say they've experienced the sting or anger caused by rude comments and actions made by those who are not part of the craft. But you're primarily addressing those who are not witches but are open-minded and at least somewhat oriented toward respect. As such, I wonder how many people in that group will take away an informed sense of respectful engagement from what amounts to a 40 minute scolding for behaviors they may have exhibited simply because no one has yet explained to them what *is* respectful. I don't think your true audience consists of habitual offenders, who are probably not listening, even though that seems to be the audience you're speaking to in the video.

      Woah, scolding? Yeah, it's not supposed to come across that way. 🤣 Friendly chiding, I would say. It's supposed to be light-hearted. If someone finds it scolding, then it obviously hasn't landed for them. That's ok though - I can't win tnem all. I highly doubt many non-witches will actually come here to find advice anyway - I made this primarily with my key audience in mind, for a bit of a giggle.

      @@kelly-annmaddox , fair enough...I guess I don't understand, but that's OK. I usually do, as someone who's not a witch, understand your videos, and I do appreciate them, this one included.
