An Infrared (IR) sensor is an electronic device that measures and detects infrared radiation in its surrounding environment. IR sensors are widely used in various applications such as motion detection, object detection, and distance measurement. Let's break down how an IR sensor works, focusing on its working principles and applications.
    Working Principle of IR Sensor
    Emission and Detection:
An IR sensor typically consists of an IR LED (emitter) and an IR photodiode or phototransistor (receiver).
The IR LED emits infrared light, which is invisible to the human eye.
When an object comes in front of the sensor, it either reflects or interrupts the IR light.
    Reflective or Transmission:
    Reflective Type:
The IR light emitted by the LED is reflected back to the receiver by the object.
The receiver detects the reflected IR light and converts it into an electrical signal.
    Transmissive Type:
The IR light passes through the object (used in some specific applications) and is detected by the receiver on the other side.
    Output Signal:
The receiver (IR photodiode or phototransistor) generates a voltage or current proportional to the amount of IR light detected.
This output can be processed by an external circuit or a microcontroller (like Arduino) to take appropriate action, such as sounding an alarm or lighting up an LED.
Components of an IR Sensor Module :
IR LED (Emitter): Emits infrared light.
Photodiode/Phototransistor (Receiver): Detects the reflected IR light.
Comparator Circuit: Compares the detected signal with a reference signal to produce a digital output (HIGH or LOW).
Power Supply: Typically operates at 5V.
    Applications of IR Sensors
Motion Detection: IR sensors can detect the movement of objects, making them suitable for security systems and automatic lighting.
Object Detection: Used in robotics to avoid obstacles.
Proximity Sensors: Used in smartphones for screen on/off functionality.
Line Following Robots: Detect the line color for navigation.
Remote Controls: TV and other appliance remotes use IR sensors to transmit signals.
