Thanks for the great tip: put items from pockets into the backpack before security to save time (especially the time it takes to collect everything from the bins and get them back in my pockets without leaving something behind). Unless, it is a family emergency - I am not flying anywhere for less than two weeks. So I guess the best I can do is carry on (with the personal item).

I also put heavy items in pockets (before check in desk) if there is a weight restrictions on carry on. Small heavy items like batteries, charging blocks, camera, etc.
Sometimes, I don't mind to fly for a weekend somewhere, so to be fast helps a lot. Also in US many credit cards offer the programs for fast security pass, like Clear & TSA Precheck.

Or, put items in zip pockets of a jacket that you can easily take off for security 😊

Can’t believed you even had a jacked inside the backpack and not on you because you didn’t need more space. It gets much harder when you actually need more stuff and then you have to wear a towel as a scarf 😂

Ahahah! Yes, it was very minimal set of things! But sometimes for bigger trips we need to get more creative!

      Sorry for delayed answer. This backpack is 12" x 16" x 6", which was even less than minimum Spirit's requirement of 14" x 18" x 8".

Hey! This backpack I took with me, is a present and was custom made in a leather shop in Ukraine. Your backpack size will mostly depend on how you plan to travel. I think you can bring carry-on on pretty much all flights from US to Europe, on the cheapest tickets. But, it you will fly with budget airlines in EU, you will have to pay for carry-on additional fee. You need to do a little research with the airlines and their restrictions, as they can differ. Let me know what is your plan and size of the back pack you need, and I can advice you with the great options. Also, if you have any other questions, I'll be happy to help here.
and yes, you can wash your clothes in Hostels in Europe.
