      At some point some developers advised people to pirate their games rather than buying them from G2A. There's a lot of shady stuff going on behind it.

      I think it's pretty clear what Ellie would have chosen. Marlene even said Joel knew deep down. And he did. He clearly noticed how she was doing. She was suffering guilt and trauma that made her want to complete this mission despite the danger. She was nearly at the end of her rope, and that's why Joel told her about "the guy who missed" and how he was so ready to do it. Joel knows what she currently feels can be temporary.

      We’d expect Joel to act this way. The fireflies also definitely knew it was a high probability Joel would be heartbroken. What we didn’t expect is for the fireflies to do things in the worst possible way. They could have lied and told him it was Ellie’s choice. What I am saying is this. They had time to prepare for their arrival and think through the possibilities and solutions but they didn’t.

    • @nimz8521
      @nimz8521 ปีที่แล้ว

      However earlier in this episode she said they had to finish it. No halfway. Joel knew what she would choose and took it away from her. Joel couldn't give up Ellie because he lacks empathy for anyone else's "Sarah". He had more in common with Kathleen at the end.

    • @alice45-fgd-456drt
      @alice45-fgd-456drt ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@nimz8521 I think that's a very simplistic view of a very complex issue. The vast majority of parents, regardless of species, would kill to protect their children. It's survival instinct. Marlene claims that Ellie would've given her life to try making a vaccine, and true as that may be, she didn't give Ellie a choice at all. She was dead set on killing Ellie on the off chance that they'd be able to make a vaccine against a fungus. Regardless of how much I want something done, I'd still feel violated if someone took that choice away from me because it's my choice. They didn't give Ellie that chance, which doesn't make her death a sacrifice, it makes it just another murder of a child. I wouldn't kill my kids to potentially make medicine, and the fact is that neither would you.

      I feel like no one realized that Ellie was under the impression she's leaving with Joel after it's done. No one informed her this procedure is going to cost her her life. Everyone else is thinking Joel is wrong for what he did. But they didn't even let him say goodbye. Marlene even stated she didn't mention anything to her she ready and prepped to go. Than she threatens Joel not to interfere with there plans. I'm not going to consent anyone's life on the maybe this will be the cure. When they haven't even trialed and errored anyone. The Dr could be absolutely off with it could be a vaccine and is just talking out of his ass.

  • @TrentRidley
    @TrentRidley ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Whilst I knew a few tidbits from the first game, such as Sarah's death occurring on the night of the outbreak and that the story centred around Joel guiding Ellie across country and forming a father-daughter type bond along the way, I haven't actually played the games, so this series has been quite the journey.
    Ellie's birth scene was amazing... and tragic... and scary... and beautiful... and really interesting as the likely source of Ellie's immunity. What a devastating thing for Marlene though. They certainly were very different people, but like Joel, Marlene was someone hardened by this world.
    I love that they then opened up with Ellie's trauma and the change in her personality, hard as it was to see it. Though it is realistic, the experiences she has had over the previous months would undoubtedly damage a person. Especially a teenager, as teens are generally ill equipped to deal with their emotions as it is.
    Some of the conversations in this episode were so well crafted. The one where Joel tells Ellie they can still turn around, go live a quiet life back at Tommie's, and she responds that they have to go all the way with their mission perfectly foreshadows Joel's conflict later in the episode. He knows Ellie would probably choose to die for a shot at saving humanity, but he just can't stand to lose her.
    I also loved the conversation where Joel discusses trying to kill himself. It was the most honest and vulnerable Joel has been with her throughout. I think he realised she needed that from him, but it was also something he wanted to give to her to show her just how much she meant to him. He was expressing to her that as dark and painful as it may get at times, you will find the light and the beauty again. You will find yourself again. That of course culminated in the moment where he indicates to Ellie that it was she that had healed him from the wound that was the loss of Sarah, she who had led him back to the light, the beauty, and himself again - such a touching moment. Seeing Joel come from being this person who was extremely closed-off and bitter to this moment of trust and hope was such a great representation of that healing and how far their relationship had come.
    The sound design on the hospital rescue scene (where Joel rescues Ellie from surgery) was amazing. The music was dominant, with the sounds of gunshots, shells pinging on the floor, the occasional agonised scream heard underneath it. That, and the music itself, created a great deal of tension and left a sombre sense in the air. This was no moment of triumph or joy and I think we got that same sombre sense from Joel in the car afterwards. Sure he saved Ellie, but he again had to kill to do it and he understands that he may have just resigned humanity to extinction. You can see in that moment that he's hugely conflicted and he knows that he acted somewhat selfishly. He also knows that Marlene was probably right in that Ellie would have given her life for a cure. Afterall, that's why he lies to her, right? But he still couldn't bring himself to let her go. Whilst we can all make the argument for why Joel should have acted for the greater good, I think we can all also understand why he didn't, so it's super hard to be highly critical of him. I think it's this that makes this ending such a compelling one.
    Joel and Ellie's final conversation was again brilliantly crafted. In opening up about Riley I think Ellie was essentially saying to Joel, "Hey, this is my deepest, most painful secret and I'm about to be totally honest with you about it, so I expect you to be the same when I ask you about what happened back at the hospital." She obviously has her doubts about Joel's story, but I think she so desperately wants it to be true that she's willing herself to accept it. Deep down, however, I think there's a part of her that knows he's lying. Please, no spoilers, but I can't help thinking that Joel's lie is going to come back to bite him in the second game/season. Through all this trauma and adversity they've slowly built a loving relationship on a foundation of openness and trust. This fact was really highlighted by the conversations they shared throughout this episode, so I suspect that trust will be broken when Ellie learns the truth about what happened at the hospital and that she still might hold the potential for a cure. Though it pains me to say, I think this will likely be a major source of conflict between the two next season.
    Anyway, this first season has been great. The writing, the music, the casting, the directing, the cinematography, the acting, etc, etc, etc has all been top notch. Special mention of course for Bella and Pedro, they've carried this story brilliantly.
    Thanks for your reactions, let's do it all again come season two.

    One smaller point that is forgotten in conversation is that Bill's letter to Joel, regarding protecting your loved ones over humanity in general, also likely had a profound effect over Joel's choice. On the other hand, it was Marlene's decision (and failure) to not let Ellie know also robbed Ellie of her choice, even if we do know Ellie would have made her decision on her own. Tough choices all around.

      Ellie tired of being this "special" girl where the whole world depends on her and yet she always feels like she can't do nothing to help and people just keeps dying on her.
      Despite Marlene is Ellie's mother friend and know Ellie literally from the day she was born, she doesn't give a shit about Ellie, she didn't even give a shit from the day Ellie is borned, she rejected to take Ellie multiple times in front of her dying friend, even when she agreed to took Ellie, she still didn't raised her or took Ellie into the fireflies, she dropped Ellie off in the QZ under Fedra. until she finds out Ellie survives the bite in the mall and means she could be the key for humanity. @@rowaystarco That is true, but we have to recgonize the special case here. This could be the one human that can save the entire race from possible extinction.
      It's a great moral dilemma and why it's legendary in the first place. Do whats right morally for your family? Or do what's right morally for the human race.
      In this situation I honestly blame Marlene for ultimately not being hardcore enough. SHe should have just killed Joel when she had the chance. She kept trying to reason with a guy who never once showed any care for saving the human race. First it was for Tess then it was for Ellie. Never for the cure or humanity.

    • @alice45-fgd-456drt
      @alice45-fgd-456drt ปีที่แล้ว

      @@maybeitsyou1317 For me it also begs the question, if you have to commit countless murders, including taking children's lives, do you really have the moral high ground? At the end of the day, Marlene must've suspected why Ellie ended up immune, she's not stupid. She would have figured out that Anna was bit during childbirth and that led to Ellie's immunity. Nothing stopped her from at least trying to replicate the circumstances on herself in order to produce an immune child to sacrifice for experiments.
      At the end of the day, Marlene is selfish too, she wanted the cure, and she was willing to kill others for it, as long as it wasn't herself or her loved ones.
      That's the beauty of the story, no one's right here, it's all morally ambiguous decisions that have no right or wrong answer.

    15:18 Fun fact about that moment right there. The nurse standing closest to the window. That is Laura Baily. She is one of Ellies/Ashley Johnsons best friends & she actually voiced said nurse in the game.
    In case that you are unaware of this. Ellie/Ashley is in real life a pretty introverted & shy person. So in 2009´ish she joined a D&D game to be social & get new friends. This went very well for her. Ellie/Ashley started playing D&D on Twitch in 2015. This became so poular that they asked the audience for 750.000 $ so that they could make an animated episode of it.
    They got 11 mio.$ from the fans.
    This meant that the show: "The Legend of Vox Machina" was created last year. It has been hugely succesful. Both first & second season. The theird one has been green lit. Just saying this because if you need a new show to react to. I would recommend that.

    Ellie helped heal him enough to open his heart, but his trauma defense is still ever present. That switch to compartmentalized violence for survival at all costs extends to Ellie now. That cold look, almost robotic speech. That defense mechanism will take a lot longer to wind down.
    An interesting observation, Ellie lost her mother on her birthday and Joel lost his daughter on his birthday.

    I feel like a little bit of makeup and some fake tattoos is all she needs for season two. She’ll look just fine. She definitely showed she can be brutal enough for it. I’m excited to see the portrayal of how they deal with the consequences of the finale.
    Everyone was wrong in the end though. The Fireflies didn’t give Ellie a chance to make her own decision. They didn’t give Ellie and Joel a chance to say goodbye. They could’ve tried studying her a while and seeing if there was a way to do a cure without killing her, or if there were other things they could gain from studying her. Plus, Ellie was only 14. They were willing to Kip her for a “maybe cure.” They were one hundred percent in the wrong. They forced Joel into a situation where he had no choice but to fight. The only thing he did wrong was lie to Ellie about it. If he was just honest with her about the way things went down, I feel like it would’ve made sense to her eventually.
    Anyways, excited for season two.

    Such a good episode! Even though, it was a bit too short, in my opinion. I would have loved to have had another 10-15 good minutes of their tender moments, just to give us a bit more of their growing love for one another. But I digress. Still exceptionally well done. Lots of great moments. Seeing Ashley Johnson in the beginning playing Ellie's Mom, was such a full circle moment for her. Goes from playing the character, to being the character's Mother. And she killed it! Then that seen with the giraffe. One of the best moments of the game, brought to life in the show. I liked the snippet they showed in Making of The Last of Us, showing Bella & Pedro petting the giraffe in the zoo. That playful exuberance translated to the show. They also captured the moment Joel went full John Wick on the hospital well too, even though I would have loved to have had a bit more intensity to it. Still good though. And that ending. His actions at the hospital done out of his love for her, then doubling down on the lie. Which sets the whole foundation that Part 2 is built off of. Can't wait for next season - even though I know exactly what is to come. Still ready to see this great story continue to unfold in it's own way throughout the show! 👍

    They wont wait...IMO they'll likely start filming flashbacks as early as this Spring, as the weather would make sense and it'd be a relatively low lift as far as production needs go. Next winter they'll film the opening 1-2 episodes, then I would assume move to a new shooting location near the PNW for the Seattle setting. Season 2 then releases Jan/Feb of 2025 I'd bet.

    Marlene made a difficult decision, but she's also self-righteous. She never offered Ellie a choice either, intentionally not telling her that the procedure would kill her, but criticized Joel for doing the same when he saved her life. I wouldn't say someone who's not a parent doesn't understand because I believe most people would understand the need to protect a child, but being a parent changes perspective. When my daughter was born, I was the one who cut the cord, and I knew the moment I saw her I would kick the gates of Hell off their hinges and walk through the firey streets barefoot to protect her. As a single dad, who's close to Joel's age, who raised his daughter by himself (she'll be 24 in a couple of months), I can empathize with Joel. I'd make the same decision, because if my child life is threatened, it's going to pop the cork, and there's no putting that genie back in the bottle. But it's not really a decision. It's much more primal than that. To Joel or, in my opinion, anyone who's a real father, there's only one option.

    Loved Bella's Ellie in the show, but there are some parts that were delivered too fast and didn't have the emotion like Ashley Johnson. One major scene is the final back and forth monologue with Joel and Ellie before the season ends. The game's version was so much more emotional. Ashley Johnson gave birth to Ellie metaphorically, but this episode allowed her to give birth to her physically. Really poetic stuff if you think about it. The nurse with the grey sleeves played a nurse in The Last of Us game as well, but she also voiced Abby in TLoU2.

    if Marlene didn't handle that whole situation so damn disrespectfully and stupidly it wouldn't have went down like that! all she needed to do was show some class n treat joel n ellie with some dignity..if she sat everyone down, explained the situation and gave ellie the benefit of the doubt to make her own choice!! she would have agreed, n had joel n ellie had some time to get closure, say goodbye ect, everything would have been ALL GOOD! WTF did Marlene expect with that disrespectful undignified shit by springing it on joel, not giving ellie a choice n then have her men escort joel out IN THE MOST DISRESPECTFUL WAY POSSIBLE!! dude!! the way the guy on the left kept shoving joel every other step he took was like..... The argument that both Marlene & Joel denied Ellie a choice doesn't really work for me. Because Marlene did that deliberately, whereas Joel kind of did that as an indirect result of saving her from being murdered. They're not the same thing - one was conscious decision, one was a consequence.
    Joel was running on pure father-protection mode from the moment Marlene informed him she was about to murder Ellie to the point where he drives away afterwards. During the car journey is when Joel probably first realises what he's actually done in terms of Ellie's desires to help find a cure - it's probably also the first moment he even begins to properly think about what Marlene said about Ellie 'wanting to do the right thing'.
    But of course it's all too late by that point, so he decides to try and shield Ellie from the truth and help her make a fresh start in life at Jackson. Basically, this chain of events was set in stone. It was always going to happen this way once Marlene decided to murder Ellie.

    Talk about a morally ambiguous ending.
    On one hand, I get it. Humanity took away what mattered most to Joel and after finding something that close in Ellie again, he wasn't going to let it happen again. I don't know what it's like to be a a father but I would like that someday and having to put myself in Joel's shoes, I'd probably do the same? Not to mention, the Fireflies weren’t giving her much of a choice in the matter.
    But then again, neither was Joel. It was still a….selflessly selfish choice that not only doomed the entire world but robbed Ellie of whatever hope she had left for it. It might be refreshing to some people, seeing them finally be together in this "new beginning" but keep this in mind: it's all based on a lie.

    Typically when a movie or TV show wants to make an actor/actress taller a simple wood step stool is used for them to stand on. They are them filmed from the waist up as to keep the step out of frame. In walking scenes there is a platform setup for the shorter actor/actress to walk on. He'd never let the surgery happen because not only was she basically torn from him but she wasn't given a choice, if you're going to kill someone who offers themselves up for the cause, you let them know (unless they're really young) and this is Ellie we're talking about, of course she could handle it and she would have done it and given how Joel feels about her, it was a joke to expect him to just be ok with everything that happened and go quietly. He definitely saw sense in what Marlene was saying and I think he himself believed that Ellie would choose to die but he couldn't risk Ellie making that choice afterwards if she was given one so after everything, he knew by then that Marlene had to die too.
    Episodes 5 and 8 were my favourites, although I loved parts of every episode for all of the Joel and Ellie moments. I didn't like episodes 3 and 7 (except for the obvious moments), I personally don't ever seem to connect with the "Up" style relationships and I didn't really like the Riley ep, other than for the knowledge it gave us, perhaps because we weren't given much to know about Riley, there's not enough back story for me to connect, again, like episode 3 and given that that these two episodes were almost all about these pairs, I didn't like them much. Eps 1 and 2 were great with the history, his daughter and Tess being in the mix and all of the infected action and 4 (while slower) was really good for the start of Joel and Ellie's relationship.

    Anna (Ashley Johnson), the mother of Ellie is the real Ellie from the Video Games (Games 1 and 2).
    Season 2 is supposed to be very different from Game 2.

      Nobody was happy when they killed Joel so maybe if they go a different direction and keep him alive than people will probably be more happy about season 2, though we still gotta have Ellie and Dina happen and have them continue the journey

      @@aguycalledkwest ure wrong it will literally be just like the game, but the show will take more time in the in between part (the 4 year part we dont see). and tlou 2 will be spread out over at least 2 or more show seasons. this is all confirmed by neil druckman

    There isn't a scene within the game where Joel talks about trying to end his life. It's an interesting addition though.
