D'Indy taught Joaquin Turina, and it is the second movement of this late sonata in which the teacher most resembles his student. D'Indy was strange, in that he professed to be a hater of all modernism. And yet.... he used odd meters from an early age, at least as far back as 1901, and his Wagnerian and Franckian harmony was so complex as to lead to Scriabin-like passages that were almost atonal. After 1905, his Germanic tendencies gave way to a Mediterranean warmth, and a new style far more neo-classic and Gallic in style. The middle movement of this 1905 Sonata would seem to be a harbinger of that new style.

Une grande oeuvre, en marge de l'avant-garde que représentaient à l'époque Debussy, Satie, Ravel, ce qui ne l'empêche pas d'être séduisante et originale. Merci d'avoir joint la partition qui permet de bien approfondir l'écoute.

Thank you for this upload. I have cherished some of d'Indy's works during the years, including the symphonic poem "Jour d'Été à la Montagne, and Symphony on a French Mountain Air, among others. This piano sonata is a fine addition to these.

D'Indy was actually born 20 years earlier than both Ravel and Rachmaninoff, so you could in fact say that their styles are reminiscent of him!
