Obtaining a resident permit and permanent residency as an international student in Finland just got easier! The Finnish government made some significant changes to student residence permits in Finland, and these changes were published by the Finnish Immigration Service in April 2022.

Hi Oliver, thanks for the awesome information. I've just received a positive decision for my first residence permit 3 days ago. However - just to share with you what they actually do in practice - there was still no municipality of residence registered for my case, and I can only apply for one after arriving in Finland and visiting the DVV in person. 😂

I came last September for my MS. Migri gave me 1 year RP, I have to apply again before July with a job contract and enough bank balance and atleast 45 credits 🙂🙂

That's a great question! This is the information that I found on Migri's website:
"Your residence in Finland is continuous if you have resided at least a half of the period of validity of your residence permit in Finland.
Continuous residence is not interrupted by absences caused by ordinary holiday and other travel or working abroad as an employee posted by a Finnish employer.
If you have spent longer times outside Finland, attach to your application a written statement of the reasons and lengths of your absences."

EU citizens do not have to apply for a residence permit so you don't have to worry about this 🙂.

How about not writing falsely Student Visa in the title when you perfectly well know it is Residence Permit and in the Finnish legislation RP and visa are very different.
