    I have made a clothie every year for the past 50ish years. May I suggest adding a grated apple into the mix it then keeps it moist longer. Loved your video. Your Mum’s fantastic.

    Great video! Reminds me of watching my grandad making clootie dumpling when I was younger. It wasn't something that was made very often, so it was always an event in our family when he did make it. If we were lucky, it would last about 2 days before the last piece was gone! My dad also loved to have his clootie dumpling fried in butter.

    I loved watching this video. My grandmother made this and it was delicious but unfortunately I never got the recipe . I will make this for my Dad's 99th birthday! He was born in Dumbarton and moved to the U.S. as a young boy. Thank you in advance for sharing.

    I use my mum’s clootie dumpling recipe, which uses a packet of mixed spice, but the ingredients of the mixed spice recipe must have changed as there is very little flavour these days. Will try your mix. Mum’s clootie recipe has travelled to Australia and New Zealand and all her grandchildren and great grandchildren use her recipe!

    Over here in Northern Ireland we serve Clootie Dumpling at Hallowe'en (31 October). My Granny's recipe was very frugal, being a Presbyterian! Her receipe was 3 handsful of plain flour, 8oz Stork margarine, 1 1/2 drums Mixed Spice, 2 handsful raisins and 1 of currants, with enough 'sweet' milk to mix. Into a pillowcase kept specially for the job, and boil for 3 hours. Dry in a warm oven, then EAT EAT EAT ❤❤❤😋😋😋😋

    This was a lovely video. I want to try making this for Burns supper and the recipe alone couldn't give me the expert advice that Betty did. I would have burned a hole in my cloth for sure. Great to watch and hear the stories. Why is clootie dumpling wrapped in 2 cloths? I havent seen that mentioned anywhere else. When Gran removed the cloth from dipping in boiling water, was that cold water running from the tap to cool it to make it easier to wring out?
    Loved the 'spanking the bum' tip 😂

    I loved Clootie dumplings fried with vanilla Icecream on top as a kid but my mum used to put coins and rings in the dumpling, I know it's traditional but it used to put me off my dessert LOL. She used to be excited about us kids finding a suprise in the dumpling but I was not impressed. LOL.

    I'm making proper stovies today accompanied with skirlie. Ill also be making one of these dumplings shortly. Skirlie is great with mince n tatties and anything that's wet really but it's a mostly forgotten scottish traditional thing just like the clootie dumpling is becoming. It's pinhead oatmeal (not porridge oats) I'll give the recipe for a batch using 500g oatmeal- so, slice six small or four large white onions, add to a thick bottomed pot that's been very lightly oiled and any excess oil poured out. Fry the onions on a med heat until translucent, then add the pinhead oatmeal and lower the heat to low and turn and toast the oatmeal and onions until the onions become dehydrated and thin and caremalised and tge oatmeal is golden and toasted, don't add any seasoning and no more oil etc. Eat with mince n tatties or stews or can be used as a stuffing for chicken or inside a rolled pork belly of in a rolled beef brisket, fantastic and cheap "filler" for a family meal and healthy to boot, and vegan and vegetarian friendly of course!

    • @jaggythistle5841
      @jaggythistle5841 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Fraser! Stovies - good suggestion. Everyone has their own way of making them but I think it’s about time Betty and I made another video. She was really poorly this time last year but has bounced back. Watch this space for stovies coming up and you can tell us if it’s the same way you make them.
