That is what I loved about this scene as well. Especially on the ice part, just to see this amazing machine move and work. Probably why I love submarines and tanks so much.
People still to this day say it triggers their uncanny valley feeling and is just awful CGI. It never bothered me as a kid and when i watched it again last year as an adult thinking, hmm maybe they could be right, they weren’t, I thought it still looked fine.
@@snusemcgoose1001 To be honest, when I was younger, I sometimes thought the characters were real people and the whole movie wasn't done with CGI. Can anybody relate? 😅

I love how the mouth of the tunnel was like a dragon’s face. The smoke blowing through the holes like how a dragons snorts smoke and the icicles like the teeth of a dragon.
1:47 Fun fact: There was a Backstory for the Ghost Hobo from the deleted scene where the Engineers told the Hero Boy and Girl that there once a there was a man who walks on top of the train when the train approaches the flat top tunnel he doesn't escape right on time now in the present the Hobo helps the Boy to get to the front of the polar express so he doesn't want the hero boy end up like the hobo did.
This might be crazy. But I think that the Hobo might be Hero boy's older and bitter self who never got to see Santa Claus, and rides on top of the train because it's a part of his soul. Same with the conductor, he's probably also Hero boy's older self, who went back in time to convince his younger self into believing the spirit of Christmas. So basically, the Hobo is a version of Hero boy who died while going through flat top tunnel and became a ghost. The conductor is Hero Boy that got to believe in the spirit of Christmas, so he later on became the conductor of the train since he loved riding it so much and went back in time again to convince his younger self into going to the north pole to believe. And the Hobo disappearing at the ending is him likely being erased from existence since Hero Boy nor The Conductor ended up like him. So all 3 of them are the same person, but this might make sense as well because those 3 are played by the same actor Tom hanks. This is just a theory, but there is a scene in the movie with the flux capacitor from back to the future, but you have to look very closely to see it. But it's probably another piece of evidence that might prove my theory right.
@@LegendarySnipez7000 Not to mention the flux capacitor in the cab of the train, its obviously a reference but if you want to take it literally it basically confirms that not only time travel is involved here but the movie takes place in the same universe as Back to the Future
It really energetic and exciting specially when the camera tilts down with the train. And the best shot in my opinion the wheel shot, its pace and rhythm mimics my heart beat at that point. So good.
CGI in this film has aged well. I love this movie not just bevause of its morals, its impacted my hobbies. Im a brit, and the Pere marquette is my favourite American Loco, bevause of this movie. Thanks a lot!
I always thought the Hobo was supposed to be Jack Frost. He looked behind himself and the snow went away, leaving him with the perfect hold. He also disintegrated into snow. I figured that's why he called himself the king of the North Pole.
I noticed this back then as well, in most scenes it has 5 cars but in a few scenes like the one with the bridge and the wolves it suddenly has like 15 to 20. Back then as a kid I imagined it picked up additional cars somewhere along the tour and later removed them again offscreen. But I guess it can also be all explained by "it's a magic train" as well.
Yeah. I always imagined seven, because as a kid, I would count out how many times Chris and the Hobo had to jump a gap on the way down, and it landed on seven cars. But then the bridge shots all give it 20 so what the hell.
I love that movie. Childhood! The sound design is really great! Steam locomotives have a soul and the producers really felt it (that sound at 01:30 and 01:55 honey for the ears)! :)
I appreciate you saying who the copyright belongs to; as compared to the people that put a fair use disclaimer on a 4 minute clip, that clearly isn't fair use.
When the train is moving up hill I can’t even imagine the raw amount of torque that is going to the wheels. Has to be hundreds of thousands of pounds of force per foot
why not slide down between the cars before the climb and chill there during the whole thing? I know that would take away from the action parts of the movie but still lol
A fun fact is that the director and Tom initially considered having Tom play EVERY MALE ROLE IN THIS FILM! It would have been hilarious, but they quickly realized it wasn’t feasible 😂
Considering the fact that this scene lasted around 50 seconds, and the train was going downwards exposing the coal box of the water within the train(This is a steam powered train) The steel of the coal box would've had enough time to reach an extremely high temperature(The coal box is most likely around 2500degress) meaning Once the train had leveled after this scene the water would have been thrusted back making immediate contact with the burning steel causing instant evaporation producing too much steam,(If the pegs of the coal box did not work) causing a boiler explosion. In conclusion, the train should have exploded. 😀 P.S, this is a VERY over simplified explanation.

Swear also the split second scene when they zoom in the train going so fast like that busy before they go onto the frozen lake
This scene was truly inspired. People don’t give well-directed action enough respect these days

I think it was done intentionally to give the film a more surreal, dreamlike feel. The number of cars does vary radically between shots.
