Okay, so all we need you to do is state the real facts super accurately and fit the other rhymes and rhythms of the song and sing it in at least 4 part harmony. Only then , will Hawking finally rest in peace. 😂
And yet, he ends his song with the words: "Yet light will shine (from that once black horizon) in light you'll be reborn." Obiously referring to the Hawking radiation that contains all information of your spaghettified self :). Merry Sciencemas!
Thank you so much for doing this, Tim. These have been mind-boggling! I hope you'll do it again next year. There are still so many other Christmas songs I'd love to hear you sing. Have a very warm, wonderful and joyful Christmas and an exhilarating new year!
If I can recommend to everyone else, play this at 0.9x. It puts the carols into more familiar range of tempos, letting the harmonies and background lyrics breathe more than the algorithm may normally allow, and there's no distortion I can hear (except a touch at the end of "Science Night"). Plus it gets the channel more view minutes!
I tried .9 but it seemed too slow for me. I tried .95, that worked better but I'm very happy at normal speed for now. I guess I don't feel the need to mess with Tim's perfection.
Wow, as always what a phenomenal quality. And 7 full minutes of it!? My favorite sound-alike phrase was is “fish up onto land”, what a find! Second favorite must be “oooooo…orbitals” - naturally it comes with plenty of time for guessing ‘how might it end?’ during the build-up until it’s finally said. And number 3 would be “single cells”, which fits so perfectly, there wasn’t the slightest need to go out there into an obscure phrase or phrasing, or a clever pronunciation. Thanks for blessing us with such enjoyable content this day, and a Merry Christmas!
i already know this snippet of single cells by heart, can't wait for the whole thing obsessed with the way Tim keeps making songs even better until there isn't a single one left that i sing with its original lyrics lol
Thanks, this made me laugh out loud. Many times. I just LOVE your work, can never get enough of it. What a multi-talented fellow you are. Makes me proud to be Canadian.
ah, "the data of whether it's true..." A whole lot of people were ticked off back when I...an administrative assistant...looked at a paper and said...wait a minute, doc... I don't think this says what you think it says. :( But it didn't. And I was really ticked that they didn't want to go and figure out why the data said what it was actually saying instead of just being annoyed that their theory was wrong :(
Just WOW!!!!!!!! And thank you. This has to be a labor of love because This must have taken days, weeks, nay even months of writing, mixing, editing so Blessings for the good cheer.
Ok, so my brain was still in the Christmas song mindset, so I unconsciously started reading your comment ("Holy, holy, holy shit...") in the Oh Holy Night tune.
Imagine if we had songs like "The First Nobel" to stir the same sense of awe and reverence for science and scientists that is usually reserved for religious music. Then again.....maybe it would just turn into a science literacy nightmare when grandma wants to sing about how going out in the rain causes polio. 😅

Seven Science Carols, a.k.a. The Christmas Sweater Medley. Great work as always, Tim! Thank you for the holiday cheer!!

Those glorious harmonies on The First Nobel, Angles We Have Learned For Bonding, and O Hole of Light!!!

Lyrics:
Science night, probing night
Make a guess, might be right
Test empirically, spare not your child
With statistical power compiled (You will)
Keep it up and you'll see
You'll generate a theory
(Merry Science Christmas)
Pull your weight, ain't it freein'
In the late Devonian
A beautiful sight, Tiktaalik in flight
Crawlin' as a fish up onto land
Gone away is the ray-fin
Here to stay is the forelimb
A lunker that comes with primitive lungs
Crawlin' as a fish up onto land
Human or a lizard or a pigeon
If you're tetrapodal be aware
We descend from a sarcopterygian (What a vision)
Who ventured out to get a bit of air
If you wish for a brush-up
Watch a fish do a push-up
Remember the drain from where we all came
Crawlin' as a fish up onto land
The first Nobel Madame Curie did sway
Was for work on the brand-new uranium ray
She metered that ray as it ionized
And by inference polonium hypothesized
Nobel, Nobel
Nobel, Nobel...
Shared it with Pierre and with Becquerel
Passing through a pore
Is a one-strand RNA
Find a ribosome
A protein to convey
Protein find a string
Of genome to transcribe
Returning us to RNA
And keeping us alive
Oh, single cells, single cells
Sing all through the day
Work and hum, their enzymes come
From a one-strand RNA, hey!
Single cells, organelles
Multicellulae
Have their fun, but we all come
From a one-strand RNA
Angles we have learned for bonding
120 trigonal in the plane
Tetrahedral four responding
To repulsion in VSEPR's name
Oooooooooooorbitals
They will combine when able
Oooooooooooorbitals
This compound is stable
O hole of light
A star no longer shining
Untwinkling night
Since its death and rebirth
Lightyears away
A bonded pair combining
Unleash a wave
In the space here on Earth
As we approach
Our local time distorting
For yonder breaks
A future's causal fork
Fall toward the screen
That near event horizon
No light may climb
No light, no signal borne (Causally severed)
No light may shine
No light (bel)
(Nobel)
(So you want a Nobel)
So you've got some pet theory that fits so clearly to you
Just know the only measure is the data for whether it's true
Envisioning that dais, it sure can bias your view
That's why the only measure is the data for whether it's true
Pretty up, pretty up, pretty up your find
You'll pay in due time
When nothing replicates using your design
Pretty up, pretty up, pretty up, it's fine
Won't nobody mind
Oh no, it's all shot, you forgot to effectively data-blind
So if your power's lacking, don't go p-hacking it through
Because the only measure is the data for whether it's true
Your whole darn field may know it and peers may glow in review (Every peer may glow in review)
Just know the only measure is the data for whether it's true
Now the truth is not the kind of thing a cheque (ka-ching!) can buy (oh no)
But you might just stumble on it if you question why (you stop and question why)
If you're rigorous and inventive and you're putting in the work (Gotta put in the work)
You may be an immigrant kid or a little-known patent clerk
A patent clerk!
The bleeding edge might be at old MIT or Purdue
But friend, the only measure is the data for whether it's true
It is the point of science that you can try it, yes you!
Because the only measure is the data for whether it's true
Study oobleck and goo
Prove a theorem or two
See how molecules bind
You can study your mind
Watch the waves as they dance
Breed for color in plants
Jump into a black hole if you get a chance
Fall through the screen
Your being spaghettifying
No light survives (when you fall)
That final quantum storm (Gaze into, enter, the singular center)
Yet light (Hawking's new light)
Will SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE
(From that once-black horizon)
In light
(Radiant light)
You'll be reborn
it's amazing! thank you for writing it all out.
