Design competitions are essentially mind games. The deeper you go the more convincing your entry becomes. Thats where you elicit originality. I think a winning entry is far from being architectural, so to speak. If an architectural creation can be presented without visuals or form but can be explained clearly that it elicits vivid imaginations, then that would be sure win imho ;)
hacks which can help in winning competition are- 1. choosing the competition very carefully according to your priorities, interests etc. 2. Analyze the behavior of winners. 3. do some research on juries . 4. catch the pattern of design that wins. 5. do something more than the minimum requirement. thank you for the tips .😊❤
Thank you brother. We had Thom Mayne at my school Las year and the biggest thing je told me is to fui us on learning as much as possible, then apply to an office to get experience all while designing your own project at the side. Til you connect the dots

My university always opens the second semester with a competition, so we can't escape from them even if we want to lol, yesterday was the delivery deadline, so this is useful in many circumstances. I used many things that I learned from you, so thank you very much. I really enjoy competitions, even if they are a little stressful sometimes. (btw, you are right about only us, architects, wanting to live in concrete masses lmao)
Well, I do a lot of competitions in my office for Germany and once someone does an extended amount of work or give drawings that were not required, they will hide them from the jury view so that all of the competitors have equal chances to win. Also, visualizations are not allowed cuz they never show the REAL 'reality'. They are always overdone and its hard to judge the concept by looking at the beautiful visualization. I think, for competitions that mean to build sth afterwards (not an abstract ones) its really fair. (I am not from Germany, so Im not biased over here haha ;) )
Do you have any recommendations for books or other sources for understanding basic construction techniques because all that is taught in my school is basic RCC column beam structures. I am a second year student and I feel clueless about how to check the feasibility of my ideas. Also thanks for the informative content as always!
GSD Grad and Arch Prof. here. Here's a few books I've found helpful through the years: The Structural Basis of Architecture 2nd Ed. by Arne P. Eggen and Bjorn N. Sandaker is a great resource. Building Construction Illustrated by Francis Ching (any edition) is also a classic. Lastly, you can never go wrong with Allen + Iano's The Architect's Studio Companion for quick reference beyond structure, into many other fundamentals a second year could use.

Some of them are trying to brute-force success, like delivering more than asked or use the same draft on multiple competitions. Instead ask yourself what‘s most important and boil it down to the core. Every drawing should be on point. No questions left. If you need double the sentences to get on point you‘re bad at articulating.
№3 is a little tricky? If they are looking for just one style like concrete blocks I'll feel somehow limited and makes me question why they didn't put it in the description of the competition. Also I can't be sure if they won't like something new, so I'll feel very confused and that's why I'll try to not take it too seriously what the previous winners have in common. That's my personal opinion.

You probably don’t have enough ability to compete at first year (computer programs, mental catalogue, graphic ability etc.) just spend every minute you have learning how to show your work better and never stop filling your brain with information and by the end of your second year, you should have a fighting chance.

architecture competitions are disgrace to the profession. change the jury panel you will find totally different winner. why 99% people are working for free. imagine you ask list of lawyer to file case for you and you will decide who is going to get the case, no one will do it, but architect will. if you want to get projects make public relation so that they trust you "architecture competition are nothing, but torture" rem koolhas

That's a great question, and I have never personally had to do that. If I understand correctly, most briefs usually specify that authors maintain the IP and allow organizers to use it for promotional purposes, which isn't a transfer of rights.
competitions: a way to get hundreds of architects working for free, only paying a minimum to 2/3 of them. Nobody should work for free, if you are good at something, you should charge for your work/time.
$25,000 Is not much for over 50 architectural concepts, you would earn 2 or 3 times that in a proper job. And you mention it is almost a quarter million dollars. No it's not, you need to add another zero for that.
You're absolutely right! It was a good practice but the rewards were small especially compared to how much professionals paid. For the record though, quarter million refers to the construction budget - which is still a small sum for an architectural project but definitely a big responsibility for a 3rd year undergrad at the time ;)
